I’m off to see Paramore tomorrow - super excited!
what’s the best and worst gigs you’ve been to and why?

OP posts:
Tarkan · 14/04/2023 23:21

I've just realised one I missed because my subconscious is obviously wanting to forget it.

Lostprophets.

The utter cunt who is Ian Watkins is actually the reason I didn't get trampled in the mosh pit when I fell over. At the time I was so thankful then the news came out about him and I think some of the stuff happened around the same time as that tour. Envy

I guess this should be my worst gig now. I enjoyed it at the time but the memories are all ruined by what he did.

dropthevipers · 14/04/2023 23:22

best-Laurie Anderson performing "United States" over two nights at the dominion theatre in the early eighties. `~~~~~Utterly mesmeric. I could tell my grandchildren (if I had any) that I saw her perform "O Superman" live. worst? cannot think of one.

Best - The Levellers, Brixton Academy, 1995 - sweat dripping off the ceiling due to the amount of moshing.

I was there! One of my first gigs - I was mid teens, tiny and ended up on some guy’s shoulders… totally non sleazy and with hindsight I think he may have been protecting me from getting crushed or kicked by crowdsurfers, bless him. Amazing gig and such a nice crowd.

Best - Levellers is up there. I’ll also say Pulp - can’t remember the venue but it was somewhere tiny like the Astoria. Blur at Mile End. Radiohead at Brixton, should have been amazing except for a couple of pervs in the crowd 😡. Prodigy at the V festival. Robbie at Glastonbury, surprisingly.

Worst - aforementioned Kaiser gig at the O2 with drunk Ricky. However the Fratellis supporting were great.

Envious of those who have seen Queen, Nirvana, Bowie. Amazing.

Worst performance : Paul Young but he was a support act
Best : too hard to say been to loads of great concerts inc Queen ( Wembley 86 ) , Springsteen ( a few times ) , Cher ( 2019) , George Michael ( a few times ) .

Was that Paul Young supporting Genesis 1986? If so, I'm with you - he was TERRIBLE!!!

I was a huge fan of the early stuff, I don’t bother now. But Slash with Myles Kennedy on vocals is amazing, haven’t had chance yet to see them live though.

I saw Slash with Myles Kennedy at Glastonbury in 2010. I managed to be front row and get myself right in front of where Slash stands on stage (you can see me dancing on YouTube videos of the set). It was absolutely fantastic. Slash just keeps to himself. He knows he's a rock star. Myles Kennedy is an entertainer.
Faithless at Glastonbury were surprisingly good.

Like a PP, I've seen Bon Jovi about 7 times (lost count tbh). They've always been excellent, but the energy felt off on the last one, so I'm not sure about going again.

Def Lepard at the O2 were meh for me. Still have tickets to see them and Motley Crue in a couple of months, the weekend after I finally see Pink though! I've seen Motley Crue before, but Tommy Lee had an injured shoulder and couldn't drum, so hoping to actually see him drum this time. He did play some piano last time, but it's not the same.

I went with a friend to see Matchbox 20 about twenty years ago as her original companion was ill. She was a huge fan. I came away from the gig thinking 'meh, they were nothing special, but that support act was fantastic'. Said support act was a then-unknown Maroon 5.

Aerosmith were amazing at Wembley Area, not so good at Marley Park in Dublin. I think venue can make a huge difference.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 14/04/2023 23:30

Best - Kendrick Lamar last year - just incredible

NotNowMartha · 14/04/2023 23:34

Best - Depeche Mode, seen them a couple of times but the Violator tour at Wembley was amazing.
Ben Harper - Small venue, incredible voice
Wolf Alice.

worst - 5 star…i didnt like them anymore but my parents booked me tickets as a treat and I had to pretent to love it. 😂😂

cornflakegeneration · 14/04/2023 23:42

Best - Panic At The Disco

Worst - Pop Idol tour 🤦🏼‍♀️

DelphiniumBlue · 14/04/2023 23:43

Best..Queen, saw them supporting Mott the Hoople in the early 70s when they were hardly known, almost didn't bother to go in to watch the support band, so glad we did! Saw the lots of times after that, but the first time was astonishing.
Robbie Williams surprised me, he was fab despite rubbish football stadium venue, but the Stones and Michael Jackson were dreadful in a similar arena. Van Morrison was dull and uninspiring, but Sparks were the worst, very unsparky even though we were only a few rows back in small-ish venue. I saw both the Specials and Marc Almond a few years ago, and they were both great fun, as were Madness, even outside in the pouring rain!

Best - The Levellers, Brixton Academy, 1995 - sweat dripping off the ceiling due to the amount of moshing.

Worst - Springsteen at the RDS in Dublin. Windy night and sound was out of sync

What a shame as Springsteen tickets can be really expensive!

TeamSleep · 14/04/2023 21:59

I haven’t seen many bands live which I regret but the best was Muse.

Worst was All Saints, I loved their recorded stuff but live they were really screechy and it hurt my ears!

Would love to see Prodigy and Foo Fighters live.

Good to hear - Muse are on my bucket list

cornflakegeneration · 14/04/2023 23:53

Ilovepugs2017 · 14/04/2023 22:31

Anyone seen Imagine Dragons live? They’re one of my fave bands but not managed to see them live yet 😔

Another one on my list to see

QuirkyBuffy · 14/04/2023 23:56

Not been to many but all were good.
Offspring in 90s in Manchester
Take That (with a surprising set from Robbie)
Andrew WK at Manchester academy.

booked Coldplay for June in Manchester and Busted for September in Manchester

PickleOfAConundrum · 14/04/2023 23:56

My best concert I went to was Def Leppard with my ex boyfriend & it was amazing. I had to sit on his shoulders the whole time as I'm petite but he never complained once 😂. I'm looking to go see Lewis Capaldi soon. That will make my 2023 an amazing year all round!

AllieBurns · 14/04/2023 23:58

Best = The Stranglers, late ‘70’s.
The excitement in the air in Newcastle City Hall was almost palpable. It felt like a really era-defining moment for me. Like being at Woodstock or Live Aid or Simon & Garfunkel in Central Park or something.

Worst = My biggest disappointment in terms of expectation v reality was Van Morrison years ago at Manchester Apollo. I so loved him and he was just obviously in a really bad mood and not one iota interested in the audience. No relationship at all with the people who’d made the effort & spent the money to go and see him.
Black curtains behind him.
I’m thrilled now by the sound and lighting at Glastonbury, for example. At that gig there was nothing just him and a saxophonist and a black background.
My best memory of that gig was the small group (about 4) behind us who had taken something stimulating beforehand and were whooping and bouncing off the walls. To contrast with his his miserable fucking face.
Sorry Van. Your music is still sublime though.

Marsyas · 14/04/2023 23:59

Best -Pulp at Glastonbury. I was in the front row.
Worst - Lou Reed at The Albert Hall. Left half way through.

AllieBurns · 15/04/2023 00:03

Sometimes the RAH for non-classical feels like Vegas - “okay I’ve peaked and am on the way down so I might as well make lots of £££”

i saw Clapton there a few times (before I found what a racist twunt he is). Totally going through the motions.

Whatdoesitmatterif · 15/04/2023 00:06

Best- The 1975
worst- a few terrible babyshambles concerts too wasted to sing the songs etc

foxlover47 · 15/04/2023 00:07

My best was Machine gun kelly's Mainstream sellout tour last year
My worst would prob be at a push be Mcfly because I took my dd as she loved them and they were good just not my thing but she loved them
I'm going to see MGK at the royal Albert hall next month and literally cannot wait

AllieBurns · 15/04/2023 00:16

Gigs that stick in my mind, and I’ve been to many, are: Hot Chocolate at Newcastle City Hall, really tight band. Made amazing music and took it in their stride.
B52’s, same venue, shit.

The House Martins at The Mayfair, Newcastle. Paul Heaton stopped singing to help prevent me being flattened in the mosh pit. What I was doing there I do not know.

The Communards at Hackney Empire. Go Jimmy. Hugely entertaining.

Public Image, Brixton Academy. Fantastic.

ImBoilingJackie · 14/04/2023 22:55

Worst was Prince, decades ago. He came onto the stage and it felt as though he was just going through the motions (although what he did, he did well). At the end of the hour or so, he just walked off stage and that was it. No encore or anything. It was really disappointing.

Best, recently (last year) was Midnight Oil. The energy and stage presence was amazing. I wanted to climb onto the stage and the frontman
Previous good concerts have been Muse (Matt Bellamy is just incredible), and Queens of the Stone Age when the late, great Mark Lanegan was guesting with them.

Agree about Prince. I feel a bit 😳saying it but I never really got him. Embarrassing because it’s like saying you never Got Elvis. (And I do very much get Elvis’ place)

Nevertheless, saw Prince at Wembley Arena prancing about a large bed and with an ejaculating guitar and just thought “ugh”.

summerfinn · 15/04/2023 08:01

Best was Lana del Rey

Worst the 1975

ImBoilingJackie · 15/04/2023 09:19

@AllieBurns I did/do like Prince, and had gone with a group of friends who'd seen him before- it was just a bit of a downer for us all. It didn't reflect their previous experience, which I suppose is something.

Snoopystick · 15/04/2023 09:29

I was a big U2 fan back in the day and saw them at Elland Road when I was 14. Felt elated for days afterwards and never felt that again even after seeing bands which I love more now.

Notable mentions for Lenny Kravitz, Nirvana and Faith No More.

Worst - Bananarama at a 80s revival festival. Bloody awful 🥴

AllieBurns · 15/04/2023 10:15

@ImBoilingJackie ah okay. I don’t dislike his music but I don’t absolutely love it.
I guess anyone can have a bad night and if the people you were with said the performance you saw wasn’t typical, then fair enough.
