what’s the best and worst gigs you’ve been to and why?

@SquashPenguin I'm seeing them in Vienna. Can't bloody wait!

TeamSleep · 14/04/2023 21:59

I haven’t seen many bands live which I regret but the best was Muse.

Worst was All Saints, I loved their recorded stuff but live they were really screechy and it hurt my ears!

Would love to see Prodigy and Foo Fighters live.

BCBird · 14/04/2023 21:59

Saw Kate Nash on a TV programme and she was so rude to Gavin out of Gavin and Stacey. Can't remember his name. Could not part with my hard earned cash. When she sings and mentions u think I'm.bitter and something re lemons,I would happily pelt one at her😂

OMD always give a great concert - and Depeche Mode, Human League
But the best have to be Madness - great fun

The worst was The Cure in Leeds last December - no atmosphere at all, had expected so much more

I really wanna see depeche mode now! So many of you have said they’re brill live 😅

Best - I'm finding it hard to choose as I've been to so many, but the prodigy and the foo fighters are up there along with Hot Chip and the chemical brothers and Bicep (last gig attended)

Worst - as much as it hurts me to say, The Stone Roses - first gig of the reunion at Heaton Park.
The weather was shit so the sound was awful, but the singing in unison and just having The Stone Roses on the fucking stage was awesome.

Oh difficult choice. INXS definitely up there - saw them in a tiny venue before they were big here. Robbie was incredible, but then so were Bon Jovi. Gah - I can’t choose!

Robbie seems like he would put on a great show - born entertainer.

Bet the atmosphere at Bon Jovi was epic

Actually really can’t decide who we’re the best. I think Lionel surprised me with how fantastic he was.

stereophonics and snow patrol were fantastic both times.

Stardustkid · 14/04/2023 22:02

Best oasis as knebworth, Madness at Madstock or James at Alton Towers, or U2

the one I was disappointed with was Madonna it really felt like the performance would have been the same in an empty room, there was no interaction at all Being at Earl’s Court probably didn’t help

Corcra · 14/04/2023 22:03

Best:
Foo Fighters, prodigy
Rage against the machine, fleetwood mac, Springsteen, ŕed hot chilli peppers, pearl jam

Worst:
Queens of the stone age, pixies and massive attack. Three bands that I love but just didn't seem into it. Note perfect though.
Tom waits, love him but the gig was bizarre.

CornishTiger · 14/04/2023 22:04

Bon Jovi 7 times. Love that man but his voice has gone now so don’t think I’ll go again.

Red Hot chilli peppers were epic too.

U2. - hated Bono tbh!

CornishTiger · 14/04/2023 22:04

Oh and off to see Springstein and pink this year.

Ilovepugs2017 · 14/04/2023 21:47

Omg Greenday - very jealous! Wish they were still touring now as I never got to see them!

Did he even have enough songs for a tour 😂 I only remember two of his 🫣

It was around the time that he’d just released an album (his first, or only, don’t know if he released more than one) so I only knew of the two singles as well 😂

Green Day are still touring, they played a few stadium gigs here last Summer (postponed from 2020) with Fall Out Boy and Weezer. I’ve seen them loads of times, they never disappoint. The year before the Brixton gig we were lucky enough to see them at Shepherds Bush Empire playing another secret warm up show, Hayley Williams was actually at the front of the balcony watching.

Ilovepugs2017 · 14/04/2023 21:47

Oh gosh 😅 not money well spent then 🫣

Luckily, it was cheap.

It was so unbelievably bad. Genuinely questioned if we were being trolled.

Throwncrumbs · 14/04/2023 22:05

Foo fighters Wembley 2008, Foo Fighters Milton Keynes Bowl 2011, FooFighters IOW Festival 2011 where Dave stood right in front of us so I could touch him, can’t top that ever. Worst was Boomtown Rats in about 79, so far away from the front I had a little snooze!

Emmamoo89 · 14/04/2023 22:05

ipswichwitch · 14/04/2023 21:24

Prodigy were the absolute best. Had an absolute blast, and could still hear them 3 days after 😂

I loved them too!

knobheadex · 14/04/2023 22:06

Best was Blur in 2015. Fleetwood Mac. And also The Struts in a pub back room before they got famous.
Worst was the chilli peppers. Zero audience engagement, which killed my love for Keidis. 😢 also Suzanne Vegas was pretty boring.

GuyFawkesDay · 14/04/2023 22:06

Best: Reading festival Muse and Elbow. Went for Muse bit oh my word, Elbow were just stunning as the sun set.
Also unexpectedly good were Coldplay. I am not really a fan but WHAT a show, I was in tears at one point.

But overall winner FOOS! Unbelievable. The Holy Grohl!!

Worst: Ellie Goulding before she was big. Absolutely shite.

WarningToTheCurious · 14/04/2023 22:06

My worst gig - Duran Duran at the Houston Rodeo. They were on a rotating stage in the middle of the arena and so obviously didn’t want to be there. Going through the motions.

A few days later at the same venue Diana Ross was amazing - arriving in a horse drawn carriage, several costume changes, belted out all her hits. She kicked off her shoes and ran around the arena to shake hands with people (particularly brave as we’d seen the effect of calf wrangling on their bowels not much earlier - a quite different sort of going through the motions).

VirginiaQ · 14/04/2023 22:07

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott. Always brilliant with an excellent atmosphere. Also Madness supported by Squeeze. Brilliant night only spoilt by an extremely drunk female who kept staggering in to me and a group of lads who kept play fighting when Madness were on.

Can't think of a bad one I've been to. Deacon Blue back in the day were brilliant and I hadn't been a fan before supported by the equally brilliant Fairground Attraction before they were know.

Ilovepugs2017 · 14/04/2023 22:08

Floralnomad · 14/04/2023 21:49

Worst performance : Paul Young but he was a support act
Best : too hard to say been to loads of great concerts inc Queen ( Wembley 86 ) , Springsteen ( a few times ) , Cher ( 2019) , George Michael ( a few times ) .

Oh wow- the legend that is Freddie Mercury! So jealous here 😅

Never been to a bad one. I saw Bryan Adams years ago at an outdoor festival and the wind was awful so they couldn't have the sound systems where they wanted, but where we were was still amazing. A lot of other people complained about it though so it depended where you were.

I know I'll miss someone somehow but other acts I've seen and loved so far over the years (some may age me lol) have been: OTT, Mumford and Sons, The View, Stereophonics, My Chemical Romance, HIM, [spunge], Biffy Clyro, Hugh Jackman, twenty one pilots, Kula Shaker, and Alkaline Trio (when I was 6 months pregnant with my eldest).

If you forced me to choose a favourite I would be torn between Biffy, Mumford and twenty one pilots tbh. And all for different reasons.

I'm going to Radio One's Big Weekend on the Saturday this year, I'm literally only going to see 30 Seconds to Mars but knowing me I'll also be bopping away to the Jonas Brothers and The 1975, and enjoying many other acts I've never even heard of before.

I just love live music no matter what it is. I was a photographer for a local blues festival even though it wasn't originally my sort of thing, and I found some great local and not so local smaller acts through that too. One of them actually introduced me and DH to each other. 😃

Best - Faith no more at Brixton academy in 2009. I have the gig poster framed in my hallway.

Worst - probably Marilyn Manson (before all the allegations came out, had no idea at the time). The sound was appalling. He must have really pissed people off cos it had to be deliberate. Rob Zombie on the same bill was amazing.

oh what allegations? I have seen Manson live before too and thought he was pretty good. Though it was a while ago so maybe my memory is a bit clouded 😂

LexMitior · 14/04/2023 22:09

Best

Daft Punk - Hyde Park
Flaming Lips - Royal Albert Hall
Elastica- Shepherds Bush Empire
George Clinton and Parliament- Kentish Town Forum

Worst

Stone Roses - Reading Festival
Marylin Manson - Reading Festival

FoolsOld · 14/04/2023 22:10

Best - Pink or Matchbox 20. Worst - Lily Allen.

handsoffate · 14/04/2023 21:47

Best was Guns n’ Roses’ first UK tour, I think it was 1987/88 in smallish clubs. The energy was unbelievable.

I am struggling to think of a worst tbh.

I bet guns and roses were amazing back then. I seen a recent vid of them on YouTube and axel roses voice isn’t up to par anymore imo
