DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

UngratefulFeline · 06/06/2025 08:52

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

Beautiful cat op

Oh dear you DH obviously doesn't understand his place in your household and that he needs to be grateful such a magnificent creature allows him to be in his presence

Death Glare 2

That is a cat that gives no fucks Grin

Your DH needs to understand that cats don't show gratitude - the humans should be grateful to them for the cat even allowing a human in its presence.

NotMilanese · 06/06/2025 11:14

If ever we needed the laugh reaction back...😂

dontcomeatme · 06/06/2025 11:14

I think this sounds like a truly deep seated issue between the two and would recommend tharpy for this level of abuse. I believe you can find decent flyers in cat cafes with contact info for couples counselling of this sort!

DiaryofWimpy · 06/06/2025 11:15

What a beautiful cat 🐱 ungrateful or not 😂

Pffft, our current ca(rsehole)t is 16yo DS3s. He cuddles with him, sleeps with him, brings him whole live mice/rats/voles & fractions of mice/rats/voles. He purrs for him, he plays fetch, he gets arsey with DS isn't in bed when he should be. He's even got a miniature door to access DSs room.

The rest of us?!? Me? The moment I open DSs door cat will leap down & meow at me to be fed. He'll come find me to tell me he's hungry. But do I get cuddles?! No I do not!

He stand near me, he'll lay near me (if son isn't there) but can I touch him? No I cannot! He's not even bothered enough about my existence to have a strop about me touching him, he just gets up and walks away like I'm an inconvenient draught!

We are allowed to fuss him in his cat tree though. Then he'll lick you like he's a dog.

It's a good job he's pretty!

Edited

DDs cat treated the rest of us with contempt untill she left for Uni.
I am now top human, DH will do in a pinch but DS is still beyond the pale

I feel his pain:

Our cats - two black cats (M/F siblings , he is shy )
Y'know how black cats are 18 times less likely to be homed . Especially a shy black cat . So two black cats ... the odds against them are high .
Ours were CPL , I was tasked with looking online for cats (we wanted two , bonded) and finding a glazing company to do a cat door in glass

Celia Hammond , CPL, Blue Criss any rescue has Thousands of black cats .

Male loves DD
Female loves DH
They tolerate DS
They actively dislike me Sad

I sometimes bribe them with chicken or a scrap of cheddar .. For a nanosecond they pretend to like me .
They stay with us as they worry about us adopting some "decent" cats who couldn't cope with me . <sigh>

I just don't understand the unpopularity of black cats. They are so, so beautiful! MIL has a stunning, panther-like boy who has everyone vying for his (rarely bestowed) attention. Actually, he was a rescued/fostered stray (MIL works with Cats Protection) and at the beginning very affectionate with all the family - until everyone was under his spell and his paws were firmly under the table, at which point he reverted to normal, feline aloofness. My DH would give anything to bring him home, but our twin Bengal crosses would likely kill him (DH) and piss all over everything in protest. They guard us jealously.

Our cat acts like she's Margaret Thatcher.

😂

MmeChoufleur · 06/06/2025 11:19

Cats are the Tories of the pet world. They care for nobody and nothing but their own interests. Our cat sucks round me, but I’m under no illusion that she holds any warm feelings towards me. She would stab me in the back for a handful of Dreamies as soon as look at me.

housethatbuiltme · 06/06/2025 11:21

Is your DH also the kind of guy that use to buy a random girl a drink in a pub without her permission and then thinks that entitles him to her time/attention/affection?

You cannot buy love... not from random women or equally pets.

In most cases (with indoor cats on the rise) we have captured an imprisoned a semi-wild animal, of course they don't thank us for not letting them starve during their entrapment or providing basics like a bed etc... lol.

It took about 10 years for our girl cat to adapt to my DH and he has never been anything but sweet to her.

Its not just cats either my dog never adapted to my dad and he utterly doted on her and would do anything for her (hes a proper dog lover but she just only liked/responded to women).

LurkyMcLurkinson · 06/06/2025 11:21

You win funniest title of a thread I’ve ever seen. The final death glare picture was the icing on the cake. Maybe tell your dh to play it cool and be less of a try hard if he wants the cat to like him 😂

Cats as furry Tories! As a leftie, I accept that the cat is not “property” and I do not own it. The cat chooses to live with me, and may leave at any time

Nooooooooo.
I see mine as dodgy Communist dictators with five year plans to conquer the world.

ChuckleDaughter · 06/06/2025 11:24

Saw a post online once where someone mused that people who don't like cats have issues with respecting consent. Because cats won't do anything unless on their own terms and can't be controlled. Food for thought.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 06/06/2025 11:25

Oh I love it 😂😂😂

I just can’t even ….is your husband always like this?

I’ve just been away on holidays and the pet sitter reported that my cat did not like having her tummy rubbed. This made me laugh ….she’s a cat & it would be unusual if a cat liked having their tummy rubbed.

How can your husband live with a cat and not know it’s personality?

Get your husband to watch this:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=PKffm2uI4dk&pp=ygUJQ2F0IGRpYXJ5

Ours loves a tummy rub. She lies on her back legs akimbo for a stroke every morning.
She would die in the wild, totally pathetic

AnonymousBleep · 06/06/2025 11:29

My cat does understand human commands and has better recall than my JRT. However, she also likes to wee on towels.

TimeForATerf · 06/06/2025 11:31

The best way for a cat to give you attention is to ignore it. Your DH's mistake was treating the cat like a dog which makes the cat see him as a threat.

He will learn to be owned by the cat in time, and respond in the way the cat wants.

You really really don't Grin

DD chats to the Feline OverLords and says "Dex , that isn;t a nice thing to say about Mum" He has beautiful pistachio coloured eyes with really narrow pupils
His sister has huge pupils green eyes .

Huge pupils / pinprick pupils .......hmm sign of something here ...

What in the Fuck is it with towels?! Why do they hate them so much?

I did hear its because they don't photo well but black cat hatred goes back to the time of witchcraft , probably longer .
They are a thing of beauty , when our boy goes off down the path, domain surveying , he is a magnificent panther on the territory prowl .
The girl curls up like a teeny dragon. Grin
