DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

Between the toddler meltdown in 'Murica and this post I'm having the best Friday morning I've had in a long time.

Um photo which I seem to have failed to upload before.

I can't see him 😂

Beautiful boy you have there. Your DH is a lunatic though.

Tigergirl80 · 06/06/2025 11:40

He spent 1 weekend paying attention to the cat and he’s expecting gratitude. 😂😂😂

I have a cat and I feel exactly the same as your DH …

I also know that I shouldn’t expect anything back in return …. But it still bloody annoys me.

lifeonmars100 · 06/06/2025 11:44

So funny, best laugh I have had in ages. Cats are just the best, so capricious, eccentric and often just bloody daft. I would like to be a cat if I could live in a household that loved me, think of it, sleep whenever and wherever I wanted, be adored just because I exist, have my beauty and brains (even if lacking!) praised on a daily basis, fed treats and take legal drugs in the form of catnip.

lifeonmars100 · 06/06/2025 11:47

Just seen the photos, oh what a gorgeous cat, wouldn't mess with him though, that face!

I did hear its because they don't photo well but black cat hatred goes back to the time of witchcraft , probably longer .
They are a thing of beauty , when our boy goes off down the path, domain surveying , he is a magnificent panther on the territory prowl .
The girl curls up like a teeny dragon. Grin

Your cats sound gorgeous! A panther and a wee dragon 😍I appreciate the ancient witchcraft association, but just don't understand it in this day and age. It's equally sad that people don't want them because of social media, how shallow! 😢 My next master will be a black cat for sure!

tortiecat · 06/06/2025 11:48

OP, I think I love you. Your posts have made me laugh so much. Definitely NBU. My cat is lovely, but when I tell her I love her (as I do every single day) the best I’ll get is a hard stare. At worst she’ll cough up a hairball / lick her bottom in response. I know my place.

NoisyBrain · 06/06/2025 11:49

This thread has given me a real laugh!

Our now deceased high level cat was an absolute bastard - we loved him despite his personality, not because of it. He did, however, show us enormous gratitude in cat terms, by bringing us a seemingly endless supply of dead mice in his younger days, and one live one, of which we were unaware until it expired under the TV unit and started to smell. Is that what OP's DH is hoping for? 😂

CharlotteRumpling · 06/06/2025 11:49

Has anyone said 'Leave your DH yet'?

PithyTaupeWriter · 06/06/2025 11:49

He sounds extremely insecure! Imagine being anything other than amused by a cat being a cat. Please tell me DH was being funny!

You know what, I actually kind of believe this, I volunteer for a cat refugee here in Australia and twice the same cat was bought back from adoption from 2 different families because the cat didn't understand human commands. Yes I am being legit that was the reason our poor cat was bought back, not once but twice. 🤣🤣

Its been scientifically proven that cats do understand human commands including their own name they just choose not to respond.

Edited

Both times they took her back in less than 24 hrs didn't even give her a chance to settle in 😢😢

Andoutcomethewolves · 06/06/2025 11:59

Our cat was a rescue. She showed her gratitude by eating an entire live rabbit in front of me and bringing a heavily pregnant rat into my bedroom, ripping the mother's stomach open and killing mother and babies whilst I was still half asleep. Amongst many other things (I was a child and not really capable of dealing with it)

Cats are generally wankers tbh 🤣

LillyPJ · 06/06/2025 12:00

Cats just please themselves. If they sit on your lap, it's because it's a nice warm place to sit - not because they think you'll like it. Your DH is being silly. Send him a sarcastic 'Thank You' card signed with the cat's paw print.

I wish they brought back the laugh emoji! 🤣

IsItTimeToRetireYet · 06/06/2025 12:04

i laughed at the title before I even opened the thread.

That DCat knows who’s boss and it’s not the DH. If he were to demonstrate a dislike of the cat there’s a small chance it will want to become BFFs. But cats sense fakery so this is a risky strategy that could backfire with the loss of your DH’s bed/sofa space or a claw-filled ambush at any moment!

ThinWomansBrain · 06/06/2025 12:06

get him to ferret-sit

A cat will appear so appreciative and loving after that, even a cat that understands that your husband is a twat.

Lorrymum · 06/06/2025 12:11

I look after my neighbours cat when they are away. He is all sweetness and light while they are still around. Purring and rubbing around my ankles. As soon as they leave he is a furry monster. I have to go into feed him wearing long boots (bites and scratches my legs) gloves and a thick coat.
I feed him, change his water and cat litter. I have learnt to throw treats through the door on entering, run past him and close kitchen door behind me to prepare his food etc.
My other neighbours think I am totally insane after I was heard yelling "you ungrateful little bastard" while running out the front door during heat wave wearing coat, boots and gloves.

Lilactimes · 06/06/2025 12:12

Again - am missing the laughing emoji 😹😹😹

ladyofshertonabbas · 06/06/2025 12:13

Thanks for the laugh 😂🤣😂😂🤣🤣

Cat: oh poor woman, so big but cannot even hunt. I will teach how to kill her and feed her like she is my own kitten 💖
Human: 🤮😭 bad cat!
Cat: oh... human is retarded

DramaAlpaca · 06/06/2025 12:15

This thread is brilliant, thanks for the laugh OP and everyone else.
