DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

UngratefulFeline · 06/06/2025 08:52

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

Your DH needs a crash course in how to talk to a cat and what body language they respond to! Then he needs to understand that once he has learned that, and practiced it for several years, the cat will still choose to ignore him if it wants. Cats will cat.

By god though when they do choose you, what a treat it is !

alcoholnightmare · 06/06/2025 09:59

This should go in classics!

Mitchyp · 06/06/2025 10:00

Dh needs to grow up cats down have a owner they have servants for a reason they give love and cates on their time not tour dh times

spoonbillstretford · 06/06/2025 10:00

Hahahaha.

Good luck with that. Also here is a stick for catching the moon on the end of.

Wreckinball · 06/06/2025 10:00

Is your cat a narcissist? Your DH may need to grey rock the cat to be able to cope with it’s behaviour a bit more

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/06/2025 10:00

Tell him that unless it bit his hand off at the wrist, it IS showing gratitude.

Mine literally attacks me if I am slow to meet his demands.

Foostit · 06/06/2025 10:02

This has cheered me up! How did you keep a straight face? 😂

Megifer · 06/06/2025 10:03

I love the idea of someone wanting a cat to show gratitude 😂😂😂😂

Echobowels · 06/06/2025 10:04

Loving the notion of low, mid and high level cats, @UngratefulFeline 🤣

Your boy is a beaut.

ERthree · 06/06/2025 10:06

Oh this had made me laugh. Doesn't he grasp that the cat is king?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/06/2025 10:08

I feel his pain:

Our cats - two black cats (M/F siblings , he is shy )
Y'know how black cats are 18 times less likely to be homed . Especially a shy black cat . So two black cats ... the odds against them are high .
Ours were CPL , I was tasked with looking online for cats (we wanted two , bonded) and finding a glazing company to do a cat door in glass

Celia Hammond , CPL, Blue Criss any rescue has Thousands of black cats .

Male loves DD
Female loves DH
They tolerate DS
They actively dislike me Sad

I sometimes bribe them with chicken or a scrap of cheddar .. For a nanosecond they pretend to like me .
They stay with us as they worry about us adopting some "decent" cats who couldn't cope with me . <sigh>

More photos so you can decide if it is your cat. They are of the same cat- the lighting changes his fur colour.

Photo 1: your cats reaction to your husbands attempts to ingratiate himself
Photo 2: your cat seeing you've arrived home

Modestandatinybitsexy · 06/06/2025 10:10

When DH and I first moved in together I walked in on their first cuddle just as DH said “he likes me, he’s wagging his tail!” Cue cat attack

😂😂😂 Has your DH ever met a cat before? What a twat! Maybe the cat might like him more if he gave it attention all the time, not just when you’re away. But probably not, because it also knows he’s a twat 🤣

I just can’t even ….is your husband always like this?

I’ve just been away on holidays and the pet sitter reported that my cat did not like having her tummy rubbed. This made me laugh ….she’s a cat & it would be unusual if a cat liked having their tummy rubbed.

How can your husband live with a cat and not know it’s personality?

Your DH should be grateful he has the privilege to serve the cat!

DH needs to learn where his place in the pecking order is

My Dad always used to say 'I come somewhere down the pecking order after the budgie', which was correct, but mainly because he was a selfish arse.

The first picture is almost definitely my cat, even down to the side eye death glare “ F off with your intrusive camera, I am entitled to my privacy as much as any minor royal.” 😺

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/06/2025 10:14

Can I advice "The Unadulterated Cat" by Terry Pratchett

It's like an insight into the feline brain.......Grin

diddl · 06/06/2025 10:16

giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

So just the basics that any cat would expect?

even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

I mean poor cat-no permission asked or given?

Woahtherehoney · 06/06/2025 10:16

This quote says it all tbh 🤣 I have two - one very loving, one who wouldn’t piss on me if I was on fire. That’s cats for you!
