DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

Love your camouflaged cat 😻.
Don't think your DH understands cats 🤣.

MoominMai · 06/06/2025 09:44

@UngratefulFeline aww I’m going to stick up for DP and say he is being unreasonable overthinking why cat acts aloof but it’s sweet he wanted to be besties lol. Also, he’s been allowed to feed the kitty treats which is an honour surely! In all seriousness though, maybe if he plays with the cat more it may help the bonding?

greenismyfavouritecolour · 06/06/2025 09:44

This is brilliant

He should be careful what he wishes for.

We had a big floofy madam (sadly now gone) who was the lady of the house. I'm convinced she thought she was married to my DH. I was just surplus household fodder.

She absolutely doted on him, almost to the point of smothering. Drove him mad.

He once spoke sharply to her because she was being so intense, she flounced into another room and did a revenge vomit on MY work laptop.

Took me ages to clean cat vomit from between the keys with baby wipes. What a girl!

I think she's been reincarnated in our house. DP works away a lot and when he phones me, His Special Floofy Princess will storm into the room shouting and chirping when the phone rings then rubs herself over the phone. I phone home when DP is away and nothing, she won't even raise an eyelid.

But I still can't work out if the OPs DH is being serious. He's lived with a cat for however long and he doesn't understand 'it's a cat'?

DFr had a new Bf who had never been around cats and wasnt keen on them. He eventually moved into DFr with Dcats home and there was a standoff with Dcats who showed their displeasure at him by deliberately pooping in his trainers and shoes and weeing on his floordrobe - nowhere else inside. DFr was given an ultimatum by bf - Dcats go or Bf does. At first she stupidly chose the Bf and rehomed Dcats with another friend. Six months later she broke up with lazy Bf and Dcats have moved back home with her. No indoor mess at all. Dcats won in the end.

Moonlightdust · 06/06/2025 09:46

This is so funny. Cats will be cats. 😆🤣

Shatteredallthetimelately · 06/06/2025 09:46

Cats, unlike other pets don't have owners, they have servants. You're supposed to be grateful that they've chosen to stay at your abode, and grace you with their time.
Your DH needs to realise household cats do as they will, he's lucky/fortune that to an extent said cat must like him as cat didn't also decide to up and off and go on vacation and return a day or so after you did, DH would have been left with questions to answer.
Cats aren't stupid. DH needs to know his place...🐱🐱

viques · 06/06/2025 09:46

Ps. I have just seen the photo, and would like to know why my cat is making itself comfortable in your house?

Um photo which I seem to have failed to upload before.

Awww 🥰 “If I camouflage myself hopefully my owners will leave me alone” 😂

IhateSPSS · 06/06/2025 09:48

Your DH needs to show more gratitude to your cat IMO because my cat makes me her door butler, mood predictor and food guesser on the daily. One day she will accept the go cat biscuits, the next day absolutely not. One hour she is my best mate and curling up on my lap is good, then she decides that actually reaching for the remote control deserves my hand being bitten. If I don't open the back door to let he in within 30 seconds she looks at me like I am cats protection league material. Your DH is lucky he's not in an abusive relationship with the cat like I am with my little Annie. She's cute and that's all she has going for her.

Boredlass · 06/06/2025 09:49

It’s a cat. They don’t give a shit about anyone. No loyalty whatsoever

PhilomenaPunk · 06/06/2025 09:49

Hmm I saw something online recently that said something along the lines of people who struggle to understand the importance of personal boundaries tend to struggle more with cats. Cats are very clear in their boundaries, have no problem rejecting advances and have the confidence to essentially say no. And that seems to rub a certain type of person the wrong way.

Giving any other being treats and (what you perceive to be) affection does not and should not guarantee you affection and attention in return. It’s a good lesson to us all. But then I am a cat person.

UngratefulFeline · 06/06/2025 09:49

The problem is when we first got married our cat at that time was what I would refer to as a low-level cat-kind of like a ragdoll in personality but she wasn’t a ragdoll. You could pick her up and put her on your lap and she would stay quite happily purring. So DH thinks this is the gold standard of cats but of course he is wrong.

He now has a mid-level cat who won’t put up with any of this bullshit. I however grew up with a high-level cat as my first cat so can deal with mid-level cat shenanigans quite easily. DH thinks I let the cat walk all over me but little does he appreciate that my childhood cat was a high-level cat who hated everyone and once left home for six months and moved into the neighbours shed because my parents held a barbecue. She would deign to sit on your lap about twice a year during which time you had to remain perfectly still and not talk or else she would clamp your arm with claws and teeth. Good times.

I’ve never met this cat, but I love him

Secretsquirels · 06/06/2025 09:51

Tell your DH that the cat responds to all human commands which you give it; provides letters of gratitude for your looking after; and caters to your every whim.

If he can't make it do that clearly he needs more practice at being in change of the household so it gets up to cat standard and you'll be booking yourself a monthly weekend away alone ................. ;-)

ShouldIEvenBother · 06/06/2025 09:51

Your DH is the spare human as far as the cat is concerned. You may have to break this news to him very, very gently, OP. Once he grasps this fact, the process of acceptance can begin!

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 06/06/2025 09:51

Is he on a pusstake? Deplorable catitude.

IsThisLifeNow · 06/06/2025 09:51

I've been having a crappy time f it lately, but this had given me a giggle, thanks OP!

Barnbrack · 06/06/2025 09:54

Is your cat male? Have you tried to explain to him that the cat is both a cat and a man and therefore someone taking care of his basic domestic needs is just something he expects? Try that, it may help...

Chemenger · 06/06/2025 09:54

MiracleCures · 06/06/2025 08:57

I agree with your Dh.

Any cat that doesn't send beautifully hand written thank you note after being cared for just didn't pay enough attention at finishing school.

If your cat sends a beautifully hand written note you’d better sleep with your eyes open because you’re about to be murdered in the night.

More photos so you can decide if it is your cat. They are of the same cat- the lighting changes his fur colour.

CountryMumof4 · 06/06/2025 09:57

One of my cats shows gratitude by curling up on my knee, smiling happily (or so it looks) and then emitting the most noxious aromas known to man (or cat) kind. I think I'd rather be ignored by him during these moments.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/06/2025 09:57

🤣🤣

alcoholnightmare · 06/06/2025 09:57

This really made me laugh! I’m not a cat fan at all, but I’m totally team cat over man baby husband on this one!
