DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

UngratefulFeline · 06/06/2025 08:52

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

I have 5 cats not a single one of them has ever shown me any gratitude for anything the only thing I get is dirty looks and a lot of resting cat face. That’s just how cats are. My puppy on other hand it’s excited to see me from the minute I wake up to the minute I go to sleep she sleeps in the bed with us but jumps all over my head like she’s not seen me all night when I wake up.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 06/06/2025 20:32

That’s hilarious, your DH is entirely deluded! He needs to be a better servant to have any chance of going up the pecking order!

DH feeds our cat and he is still bottom of the pecking order! I’m top, ds2 next and then ds1 and DH are jointly at the bottom! There is no changing the pecking order, Dcat knows who her favorites are and it seems fairly fixed. The negative of being favorite is you never get to peek in peace! That’s cats for you, thankfully we all adore her, even poor relegated DH😥

catmothertes1 · 06/06/2025 20:33

One doesn't show gratitude to mere "staff"!

SaveAndEarnMoreMoney · 06/06/2025 20:34

Elsvieta · 06/06/2025 08:55

Dogs have owners, cats have staff. They graciously allow us to serve them, and if we fail to understand that we are the ones who should be grateful, that's our problem. If DH can't deal with that, cats aren't for him.

THIS 💯

Sorry but your DH is being a bit of a dick.

Lol Agreed!!

Passenger42 · 06/06/2025 22:08

Dear Dad

Where was my feast of tuna, my snacks, my reward for swinging on the curtains, no you think gratitude is a fluffing of pillows when Mum is out when I am the master of chaos. Oh no I have thrown up in your slippers and a spiky porcupine is waiting for you in the bedroom. Ha ha ha love Felix

Witknit · 06/06/2025 23:15

This gave me a proper laugh - thank you!
I have 9 cats and would say that there is a reason that cat rhymes with tw*t

morepickles · 06/06/2025 23:25

Your DH has gone about this all wrong. Cats smell weakness - if you show them anything more than mild indifference you're onto a loser. When I was a teen my lovely Dad was most put out when he mostly ignored our cat and was rewarded with lap cuddles, whilst the rest of us who doted on the cat were scorned.

(He was also pretty annoyed when he and the cat happened to suffer from the same health issue at the same time and the vet recommended that we pay for a specialist while my dad languished on a NHS waiting list for his own treatment - "the cat is not getting better treatment than I am!").

Love is a complicated thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

bellocchild · 06/06/2025 23:36

Cats don't DO gratitude!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/06/2025 23:40

Cats are contrary little bastards luvkins.
They treat you like a servant but when you're least expecting it you'll get a head bump or a cat kiss.
They won't do this if you're expecting it.

I think your DH needs to read the book 'The Most Illustrious Imperial Serene Highness Aka Known As The Furry God/Godess Cat Rules'

He'll soon get it!

Until we married, he had only ever had dogs and chickens.

I've had chickens and they didn't show any gratitude either so he should be used to it!

Miaminmoo · 07/06/2025 01:25

This has literally made my day - imagining a world where a cat showed any kind of gratitude 🤣

I’m a cat owner too and couldn’t agree more! 🤣🤣

Ladyzfactor · 07/06/2025 02:37

My ungrateful little bastard farted right in my face today. I was laying in bed and he was on the other pillow leaning against me when I heard a tiny little squeak. He wandered off looking satisfied as I was hit with wet cat food farts

scorpiogirly · 07/06/2025 03:23

What a knob.

BlueFlowers5 · 07/06/2025 04:02

Cats don't communicate easily, you have to work at it. Mine show me gratitude by head bumping my lower legs and giving me nose kisses.
But it is given in their case on their terms.
Talk to your cat - from the other side of the room..build up trust with your voice.

I'm discombobulated that 3% of people who responded think YABU! 🤣🤣🤣

Dog people 🤨

MannyTeddy · 07/06/2025 04:24

Love this. 😂😂

Really missing the laughter button for this thread as loads of others have said.

Your photos are all beautiful.

I'm a dog person with 2 rescue cats who I love so much.

TheRoundTable1983 · 07/06/2025 04:31

Your response was completely correct. It’s a cat and they live on their terms - no one else’s! I read something the other day about a study around why some people are more ‘dog people’ and some ‘cat people’. Apparently, there’s some logic to the fact that dogs will love you unconditionally, all the time and regardless of how you treat them, whereas cats show affection only on their own terms. It was suggested that needy people sway towards being dog lovers, whereas more independent and less needy people can appreciate the appeal of cats. It made for interesting reading, and I’d say has proved to be true in your husband’s case if he’s looking for thanks from a feline! 🤣

Reckon your DH doesn’t like the cat. Cat knows it

No, cats always go round the feet of people they know don't like them to wind them up.

Selttan · 07/06/2025 04:34

It’s my birthday and my cats couldn’t even be bothered to give me a kiss - instead I got a bite and a smack. The reason - I exist!

Cat is probably barely aware of DH's existence!

TatteredAndTorn · 07/06/2025 05:32

lol. That’s the joy of cats and why they are so brilliant.
