DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

Has he perhaps been watching that video of JD Vance berating Volodomyr Zelenskyy for not saying "thank you" a sufficient number of times?

feelingbleh · 07/06/2025 06:15

🤣🤣🤣 cats don't like people and think their above us. It's just being a cat 🐈

When DH and I first moved in together I walked in on their first cuddle just as DH said “he likes me, he’s wagging his tail!” Cue cat attack

To be fair, my dog makes that mistake daily.

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/06/2025 06:17

Teach your DH to slow blink. If he’s really lucky the cat might blink back.

Kleya25 · 07/06/2025 06:25

When our remaining house panther is in one of his strops I've found catnip and valerian work wonders, with Dreamies thrown in on several occasions.

I was also about to ask if this was the first time your husband had encountered a cat but someone beat me to it 😆

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 07/06/2025 06:52

That photo was like a magic eye puzzle!

JungAtHeart · 07/06/2025 08:18

Our cat has just turned six months old. She came to live with us at twelve weeks - the only girl in a litter of seven! We were told she’d be very shy and very quiet initially…probably hide. Ha 😂 If she could have spoken she would have said ‘you ALL work for ME now!’. The idea that she will ever show us gratitude is laughable. But that’s why we’re obsessed with her! A photo of Lady Mary … I have hundreds to choose from 😂

@CustardySergeant

Current orange cat situation. She had just tried to come and sit on me, because even a bath doesn’t deter her.

No, cats always go round the feet of people they know don't like them to wind them up.

That's where I'm going wrong , I try to endear myself to the cats but they know

MaleCat drapes himself round DD like a cheap suit .
If I even put my hand near him he glares at me "Don't touch me . I did not give you permission" and arches his body away

Goodadvice1980 · 07/06/2025 08:40

Your dh does realise it’s the cat letting him live in the cats house 😂🐾🐾

Toddlerteaplease · 07/06/2025 08:43

The advantage of living on my own is that the cats have no choice but to be my friend.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/06/2025 08:43

I expect the cat spent the whole time trying to work out how he could kill and eat the spare human.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/06/2025 08:46

@CustardySergeanti have one of those boards and Penelope did the same!

Until we married, he had only ever had dogs and chickens.

That explains it. He’s probably used to the chickens showing real deep felt thanks when he takes care of them. They are notorious for their ostentatious displays of humble gratitude

MyOtherProfile · 07/06/2025 08:54

Your poor deluded husband! And the poor deluded 3 per cent who think you're unreasonable 😂

He regularly tries to call the cat over to him and has whistled in the past. He has coped with this failure but I really think he had visions of the cat and him becoming BFFs while I was away.

Whistling at a cat just shows he's a bit thick OP. It's a cat not a dog.

Reckon your DH doesn’t like the cat. Cat knows it

See now this is completely wrong.
When a cat knows a person doesn't like them they will make a beeline for said person and be super affectionate, they do this as they know the person hates it and it brings the cat enormous pleasure.

More photos so you can decide if it is your cat. They are of the same cat- the lighting changes his fur colour.

Your cat has the typical 'twat' facial expressions 🤣 Love it.

WestwardHo1 · 07/06/2025 09:19

But cats are arseholes! Didn't your DH realise? They are grateful for nothing. We should be grateful to them for allowing us to serve them and occasionally stroke them.

To be fair to the small Velociraptors, they have to make those fluffy, clucky noises and pay protection eggs to the human because they know the threat of a packet of Paxo and half an onion shoved up the jacksie.

Now we can't just let a poster know we appreciate their post with a laugh we have to quote and 🤣
Just because nasty people were missusing the React 🤣

Tell him he tried too hard and the car misinterpreted this and felt nervous and defensive. Some cats aren't as food motivated as dogs. If he sits in a room with cat and ignores him that cat will come round.

He might train the dog but the cat needs to train him
