DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

UngratefulFeline · 06/06/2025 08:52

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

Doesn’t he understand that we are the ones who should show gratitude to cats because they deign to honour us with their presence?! 😂

Givemethesun · 06/06/2025 18:07

Does he not interact with the cat normally! He lives with it?! surely he’d know how they behave now

Hahahahahahahahahahahahhahah

Cats should be rated on two scales:

  • Peaceful - Serial Killer
  • Decorative - Chaos

Ragdolls will fall into the Peaceful and Decorative category - feral farm moggies tend toward the Chaotic Serial Killer side of the graph.

I'll bet everything he's done to 'make friends' has in fact been space invading, borderline threatening and absolutely rude - he's lucky your cat isn't fully Chaotic Serial Killer... he'd be hogtied to the bed missing his eyeballs, entrails and toes otherwise!

Ahh our Ragdoll is just a giant marshmallow 🤣 He’s a total baby and loves cuddles. Our previous Ragdoll was a bit more reserved though.

We had a small fluffy dog when I was young (I know changing species!) who was on the serial killer spectrum. Looked like butter wouldn’t melt but was vile 😆 I remember my brother kindly volunteering to carry her on a long walk (after she refused to go further), only for her to turn and snap at him at the end of it when he put her down! Now that’s ungrateful 😂🤣

Your DH needs learn his place in the pecking order.

This. Tbh your DH sounds a bit dim to think a cat should show gratitude.

My little treasure came and hassled me for his biscuits approx. 6 times yesterday. Whose lap does he sit on in the evening - DH. Nearly every bloody day he does this. Little bastard.

Then there are the odd days when he comes and sits on my lap and it's all forgiven.

Edited to add - he'll walk past DH in the kitchen and DD in the lounge and still come and get me to give him his biscuits - WHY!!😿

Edited

My cat (sadly no longer here) would sleep all night with my daughter, then come into my room in the morning and paw my face until I got up and fed her.

I mean, cat.

Tell him he needs to have a talk with the cat about gratitude.
I did this to Dh one time when we had a small baby he complained about something being inconvenient or something I told him he should talk to the baby about this if he has a problem. It took a few seconds, then the penny dropped and he walked away feeling like a numpty.

He will walk past other people when we are in the sitting room and come and look at me to get up and feed him.

Glad it was the cat pawing your face😂

I look after my neighbours cat when they are away. He is all sweetness and light while they are still around. Purring and rubbing around my ankles. As soon as they leave he is a furry monster. I have to go into feed him wearing long boots (bites and scratches my legs) gloves and a thick coat.
I feed him, change his water and cat litter. I have learnt to throw treats through the door on entering, run past him and close kitchen door behind me to prepare his food etc.
My other neighbours think I am totally insane after I was heard yelling "you ungrateful little bastard" while running out the front door during heat wave wearing coat, boots and gloves.

I've had a long, long week and the mental image of this has made me laugh my head off. Thankyou 🤣🤣🤣

He is lucky the cat hasn’t shit in his shoe.

Its been scientifically proven that cats do understand human commands including their own name they just choose not to respond.

Edited

We have a couple of girl cats (sisters) who respond to the other one's name more than their own. Our theory is that they suffer from FOMO - they think the other one is being called for dreamies and don't want to miss out.

WilfredsPies · 06/06/2025 19:23

I don’t like cats. I’ve only ever loved one, who was a very calm, very laid back beautiful girl who just enjoyed sitting next to you, even if she was a bugger for bringing creatures home, running somewhere inaccessible and making you listen to crunching sounds. But your cat is gorgeous OP.

I’m still with your DH though.

steff13 · 06/06/2025 19:27

We are fostering a kitten right now. She needs to be socialized so she can be adopted to a nice family. I was initially keeping her in my bedroom. I fed her, cleaned her litter box, laid on the floor and read to her (she was under the bed, so I wanted her to see me), and she still ran from me every time I got close. I'm a nice person and animals and babies always like me

We moved her to my daughter's room, and she's totally bonded with my daughter. Cats are cats; there's no way to predict how they're going to be.

JohnTheRevelator · 06/06/2025 19:32

He obviously doesn't understand cats!

Remind him of the adage: dogs have owners, cats have staff. And he was just a fillin staff so he really didn't count.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 06/06/2025 20:16

How do you know someone’s never owned a cat before??? Brilliant OP, just brilliant 😂😂😂

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/06/2025 20:18

Poor cat, stuck with a complete idiot with his smells and drool and bouncing around with a stupid grin on his face, barking at her for attention. And a dog.

The unfortunate feline must feel rather like when tourists believe that the locals will understand them if they just shout that bit louder. Especially when the locals concerned have post graduate degrees, understand the tourists perfectly well but just can't be doing with being shouted at.

I tell my cat she should be thankful all the time but instead she throws up on my rug.

Your standard cat is generally a bit of a twat, the world revolves around them and we are there to serve. It's a somewhat endearing quirk of a cat who exists just to annoy you.

Did he not realise this when you got the cat?

I wish he could meet our cat who was also sick on the rug, twice, this morning. I stepped in it in my bare feet. She won't use the cat flap and visitors have to be warned she may scratch them in a bid for attention she then rejects. Had to stop using the milk jug as each time I turned around her head was in it. She lies in my place at the table and on my chair. These are just a few of Ava's little quirks. Your man doesn't know how lucky he is. Your cat sounds lovely.
