To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Hi frugalkitty
Glad you found us.
We should have a think about what the next thread should be called..

AdaColeman · 29/06/2020 22:35

@MsRinky Lovely story about Nellie. My grandmother was usually called Nellie, though she was really Mary Ellen. She had a biscuit sewing tin and button tin, everything was recycled in those days! Wink
Crumpets make everything right!

That 4711 bottle is so pretty, I’m going to get myself one.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/06/2020 22:40

I also say Four Seven Eleven. 🙂

poppy2021 · 29/06/2020 23:15

@alwaysreadyforablether I'm watching for my new non wired bras to arrive.
@wildthingsinthenight I say four seven eleven.
I'm loving this thread.

wildthingsinthenight · 29/06/2020 23:38

Four seven eleven makes sense Smile

BeaLola · 29/06/2020 23:40

The Eau de Cologne looks lovely - I recall this from when little but for the life of me can't remember what exactly the smell is - how would you describe it please ?

It's my birthday very soon - I have started a mini list of gift ideas from this thread and am excited about receiving hopefully a few of them Wink

AdaColeman · 29/06/2020 23:43

I’ve always known it as four seven eleven.

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 00:16

BeaLola the smell is very fresh and uplifting. Not sure where I know it from but it seems very familiar. Maybe a Granny or Aunt?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/06/2020 08:29

shop.kew.org/products/relaxing-lavender-eau-de-toilette?_pos=1&_sid=369e32a9e&_ss=r Kew do quite nice perfumes that are not synthetic-smelling.

Dd loves them. Alongside her collection of wax seals and her record player.

ppeatfruit · 30/06/2020 09:21

SirVix Ref. pears soap, not being 'aged' . If you unwrap it (this works for any soap) leave it in a cupboard or drawer for a few months and it dries out, making it ready for use!

CurtainWitcher · 30/06/2020 09:57

Faith in Nature lavender shampoo and conditioner are gorgeous. I buy massive containers of them, which works out very economical!

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 10:44

Oh yes they are lovely CurtainWitcher
Forgot about those. We used to sell them where I work in reception.
This is another one if my vintage towels..

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 10:44

I love them. More so as they were free!

Destroyedpeople · 30/06/2020 11:02

Oh my mum used to do that thing with the soap she said it made them last longer...

Have just ironed my tablecloths, kneaded my bread and watered the plants....

SirVixofVixHall · 30/06/2020 11:06

ppeatfruit thank you for that tip, I will try it. I am also sad that the scent has changed though. I did buy some old bars off ebay a few years ago, just to smell my Grannie’s cloakroom smell ! They were £6 a bar then, and are now £36 a bar. 😢 I have one in a drawer.. !

SirVixofVixHall · 30/06/2020 11:07

The new bars are also thinner, which doesn’t help with longevity either.

VictoriaBun · 30/06/2020 11:07

Chuffed that this has just arrived !

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 11:34

Ooh fab VictoriaBun that's exciting.

I'm wearing too much 4711 today. DH has just informed meSmile

Destroyedpeople · 30/06/2020 11:38

I so want some 4711......

Was so jealous of a friend recently when she told me she had her granny's sewing box. ...
My own sewing tin is fake heirloom with old buttons etc from charity shops....

AiryFairyMum · 30/06/2020 11:40

We are rapidly running out. I have added a new thread in case anyone wants to add more, or review their purchases. My shopping basket (vintage, wicker, of course) is full. Here's the link, and thanks again: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/3954110-Old-ladies-are-actually-experts-at-life-and-we-are-fools-continued

A lovely thread.
I am an old lady, currently very pleased with the dishcloths I have just knitted...

Bluesparkled · 30/06/2020 15:43

I have just bought 4711 in a cool stick. I can’t remember how I know the scent but it’s so, so familiar.

AiryFairyMum · 30/06/2020 15:55

Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino is very much like 4711, even the colour of the bottle

AiryFairyMum · 30/06/2020 15:56

Is the stick a solid perfume version?
