To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

I cannot abide the smell of lavender in toiletries apart from the flashback it gives to my wonderful grandmother. But yes to pretty much everything else on the list.

As a student, I loved nothing better than a naice cafe. Also yes to deadheading, early nights, thick cut marmalade and proper butter, roses lime cordial and a Ruth Rendell thriller.

Next step: big pants!

wildthingsinthenight · 28/06/2020 09:22

Lupellegrino is drawing and painting a hobby or is it your profession? I really enjoy it but only dabble (Sound like Margot Leadbetter)
It's another lovely cosy thing I think

ppeatfruit · 28/06/2020 09:33

But elasticated waist in the older days people WALKED Grin . I use dm's basket on wheels when I stay at her place it gets lots of admiring comments!!) I have a photo of our road in the 1950s there were literally NO cars parked in it! It was in Barnet . We had our milk delivered by a horse and cart (my dsis used to save carrots to feed the horse, she became obsessed with horses through him!)

I think the WW2 was the reason for the lack of cars in the early 50s.

EngagedAgain · 28/06/2020 09:57

To the PP waaaaay back thread, who asked what big pants are (well mine are) up to navel, and NOT a high cut leg, but leg doesn't go down far either. On the packets they are described as 'full briefs'. You still get the appropriate size not just a bigger small style. Different brands may differ slightly in sizing. They are really higher waisted as you get with jeans/trousers.

grafittiartist · 28/06/2020 10:08

Glad to have found this thread- I have been looking for cool long length nighties.
I found myself missing C + A, and BHS- they would have been perfect!

NannyOgg66 · 28/06/2020 10:19

@ppeatfruit I agree people walked a lot more. My mother who is 84 never learnt to drive and walked everywhere with a big pram when me and my siblings were small. I think that most people just couldn't afford a car in the 50s and public transport was so much better and cheaper and we still had the railways before Dr Beeching !
Lots of people have mentioned big pants I have struggled with those as I am fairly slim but have a fat tummy but no bum, so if I get them to fit my waist there is a lot of bagginess at bottom! I like low rise french knickers but these are so hard to find in natural material I was even thinking of making my own. I miss the quality of clothes made years ago I have a few vintage things I've bought and they are made and finished so much better.
@Elasticatedwaist I think shopping trolley is brilliant idea it is better to walk than take the car for you and for the planet. Lakeland do some more modern looking ones.

ppeatfruit · 28/06/2020 10:23

Kitschplease If you get some decent quality ess. oil of lavender you may well like it. It's very real IYSWIM, nothing like Yardley Grin. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to branded products, I try not to buy any, I'm a cynic about most things that are heavily advertised on telly, they lie in their teeth Grin DM buys too much of the crap. She's nearly 92.

wildthingsinthenight · 28/06/2020 11:34

I'm starting To The Manor Born from episode 1. Already coveting a cardigan of Margery's.

Studycast · 28/06/2020 11:36

Ah yes wildthings ...Brabinger Grin

PrivateSpidey · 28/06/2020 12:53

SirVix thank you, yes, I'm thinking a deep drawer is going to be the way to go. A tablecloth drawer though - I can only aspire to that! Sounds fab.

wildthingsinthenight · 28/06/2020 13:48

PrivateSpidey I'm jealous of your deep drawer. I'll have to resort to a basket I think.
Very unsatisfactory!

Elasticatedwaist · 28/06/2020 14:49

I'd never heard of Powell Craft before . I like the look of those nighties but they are all one size . I'm 5ft 2 and a size 8 . Does anyone own one ? would they fit me ?

wildthingsinthenight · 28/06/2020 16:36

Sorry can't help Elasticatedwaist as I got mine from The 1 For You.
My ink pen has arrived it's beautiful. Yellow with turquoise or lilac ink

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 28/06/2020 17:01

Anything that smells of lavender
Doilies
A doll with a big skirt that sits over your toilet roll
Net curtains
Heated blanket
Furry boot slippers
Nightdress in pink polyester
Brown pleated skirts worn with tan tights and brown lace up shoes
M&S gift sets
Scottish Shortbread
Werther originals
Hairnets
A bottle of sherry

LanternHill · 28/06/2020 17:49

@PrivateSpidey maybe you could consider a normal sized drawer for a selection of tea towels, keep the rest in a linen cupboard ( or elsewhere) and rotate them?
I have lots of vintage china/ old tins/ linen tea towels and other kitchen ephemera. I don't like too much clutter and decided a few years ago to divide things nominally into summer / winter and rotate my mugs/ china/ tins etc on a 6 month basis. It does entail a few hours of work twice a year, but it is lovely to rediscover old favourites when you unpack. I think beautiful things need space to be beautiful.
It has also enabled me to indulge my china collection more than I otherwise might - I am now the proud owner of Brambly Hedge tea sets in all four seasons Blush

NannyOgg66 · 28/06/2020 18:24

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter lol at doll with big skirt to go over toilet roll! I had completely forgotten about those. My grandma also had night dress cases that were either dolls or cats or similar and sat on the bed. I had one when I was a little girl but I'm quite old Grin

TheRedShoes75 · 28/06/2020 19:28

@StartupRepair

Don't know if anyone here has seen Hannah Gadsby in Nanette where she describes her favourite sound as the china tea cup gently returning to its saucer.
@StartupRepair that is one of my very favourite bits of Nanette. Although I’ve got loads of favourite bits of that. Love it!
applesandpears33 · 28/06/2020 19:42

I love nice table cloths and bedlinen. I've also got a fondness for nice china and crystal glasses. Ebay is dangerous for me!

One of my favourite memories is snuggling into bed at my Gran's house when I was a kid. She made a bed with sheets, blankets and a heavy eiderdown. The weight of it all was very comforting. Can you still buy eiderdowns? I've been on the lookout for nice, warm blankets recently but haven't found anything I like at a reasonable price.

applesandpears33 · 28/06/2020 19:45

I've just looked on e bay. There are loads of eiderdowns!

PrivateSpidey · 28/06/2020 21:46

LanternHill good thinking. There's definitely something in that, and I love the idea of having things on rotation. Hmm. Lots to think about in making this important decision!

I love Brambly Hedge, especially the autumn and winter designs Smile

EgremontRusset · 28/06/2020 22:29

eBay is also full of gorgeous old pure merino blankets in lovely colours and great condition. They machine wash nicely on a wool cycle.

Lupellegrino · 28/06/2020 22:48

It's a hobby but I enjoy drawing for my children and they like it too. I'd like to take it more seriously.

I also love cross stitch. I'm doing a sampler at the moment. It's a Moira Blackman tree of life. I want to do them for my daughters and my sister's children so they'll eventually outlive me and hopefully be passed on.

VictoriaBun · 29/06/2020 06:57

Oooh P.19 already ! When we get to 20 we need a second thread !

Imissmoominmama · 29/06/2020 08:30

My friend bought lots of wool blankets from eBay, then put them together in a duvet cover to make a weighted blanket. She loves it!

awaynboilyurheid · 29/06/2020 08:56

I love this thread! Love a sherry! was introduced to this by my Elderly Auntie. There’s something lovely about reading the Sunday papers with a sherry before dinner! During lockdown I’ve swapped to using up all my soaps instead of shower gel, now much prefer them. Also loves a good quality tea towel the thick old fashioned ones with checks in various colours. Also tea in a china cup and saucer tastes so much better!
