To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

I’m 40 and I love massive pants, lavender and rose scented bar soap, electric blankets, and jigsaws!

Cattermole · 20/06/2020 16:44

Worth, "Je Reviens" - the epitome of 1950s glamour to me, smells like parma violets and the inside of a siren's handbag.
Gloves, not woolly ones.
Lipstick cases and powder compacts.
Doris Day.... I heart Doris Day, she was always my mum's cooking music and I can belt out Que Sera Sera with the best.

Tea and crumpets.

Has anybody mentioned multiple cats....?

@Elvesdontdomagic

I am currently contemplating getting a granny trolley for going shopping with. My friend has one and it's actually clearly the right thing. Not sure why I haven't always had one.

I bought one about 5 years ago when I was 35 but never had the guts to use it. Now I don't think I would anymore. I've never seen anyone young with one.

I'm 28 and have been using a granny trolley for years!! Especially when going into the city on public transport or for exhibitions. Saves your arms and everyone else is so jel Grin. Also LOVE lavender, vintage tea and silver sets, crochet, blankets, slippers, hot water bottles, puzzles, a good murder, rosewater, people watching and dont get me started on granny pants GrinGrin

I have found my people!!!!

ALL of these - absolutely all of them.

Proper china teacup obviously.

Oh, and cats!!! Grin

I've realised there's more - I also love:

Chanel number 5
My great grandma's pearl necklace and earrings
Loose-leaf tea
Radio 4
Talc (on hot days)
Leather gloves in jewel colours (on cold days)
Thermal vests (again, for winter)
Dresses with pockets
Growing roses and vegetables

I thought I was a hipster with some of these things. Now I realise I am definitely not.

Oh and scones with thick butter, jam and clotted cream!!

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 17:07

Real butter too, not spreadable or margarine.

Yes hello - waves! We need a massive (socially distanced) tea party. Oh and i'm digs and hens rather than cats 😉

BlusteryLake · 20/06/2020 17:08

Peppermint creams
Elasticated waist trousers

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 17:08

Gin used to be an old lady thing, didn't it? Now everyone drinks it. Now I realise that old ladies just know the good things in life.

Shalimar by Guerlain and Coty L'aimant.

stopringingme · 20/06/2020 17:09

I got a granny trolley earlier this year, it is bright red and I love using it - but I am turning 50 later this year, (that is my excuse) and have got fed up of carrying loads of bags. Look on Amazon they do loads in various price ranges.

Big knickers always !

woodhill · 20/06/2020 17:11

I love tea in a proper pot with a tea cosy, a decent china mug,I wear an apron when I'm cooking

BestIsWest · 20/06/2020 17:12

Here for the lavender, gin, Agatha Christie books and cardigans.
My delphiniums are coming along nicely.

I too have a bit of a thing for programs featuring ‘that nice David Olusaga’.

I mean, old ladies are actually experts, aren't they? They are experts at life and we are fools.
samandpoppysmummy · 20/06/2020 17:17

I love big pants and cross-your-heart bras - so comfy and they look nice under clothes 😁

AdaColeman · 20/06/2020 17:17

YY to pearls. When I'm being a rebel I wear my black ones! Wink

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 17:18

I think maybe they've been alive a long time and worked out what's important (being comfortable and being kind to themselves) and what's not (following fashion, rushing around, caring what others think). I wince when I think I used to wear thongs and uncomfortable contact lenses and straightened my naturally curly hair every day. What was I thinking?

Big knickers
Vests - proper ones for wearing underwear clothes
Cardigans - I’ve always loved them though
I always put tissues up my sleeve

And I saw a older lady putting her bins out wearing one of those nylon house coats that my nana used to wear when she was cleaning and wondered where you buy Them.

SerendipitySunshine · 20/06/2020 17:22

YES yes to all of these, and everything in the Lakeland catalogue.

LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE · 20/06/2020 17:24

My grandma wore something she called a "panty girdle". So when you get dressed it's knickers, bra, tights, thermal vest, panty girdle (over tights), slip, then dress or blouse and skirt.

SerendipitySunshine · 20/06/2020 17:24

4711 cologne is great, and Tom Ford completely ripped it off for his Neroli Portofino.
