To say no to visiting pigs for Christmas??

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 18:02

My sister wants to buy my niece and nephew micro pigs for Christmas. They are coming to stay with us for Christmas so she wants to know if she can bring them with her!!!
AIBU to say no because

  • we don’t want pigs running around our house partly due to we have no idea (and neither does she) if They will be chewers/poo everywhere/cry all night plus they are tiny and will be at danger of being stood on
  • we have a 3 bed semi, with 9 people, Xmas tree, extra chairs etc it’s already going to be crowded enough and we don’t have the space to put a pig pen anywhere - the conversatory is already taken over by the guinea pigs cage. (C&C open type)
  • I don’t agree with animals being given as Christmas presents as Christmas is busy and chaotic and full of noise and lights and wrapping paper and choas. I believe a new pet needs to be introduced to a family in a calm and serene environment where they can get used to each other and the animal can retreat to a safe place when they need too
  • I also don’t think any animal should go an3 hour journey unless absolutely necessary or they have got used to car journeys
  • you need a permit to move pigs to another premises and I think are them not allowed to move them again for 20 days!!!
  • Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I don’t want it overshadowed by pigs!
  • we will all be drinking (as is the nature of Xmas day) so I don’t think we should be in charge of tiny piglets when no one knows exactly what they are doing with them.

On a positive note I have found out that DH is the perfect mumsnetter husband, his response was ‘fuck no, that’s all you need to say, just no, don’t need to justify it, we say no that’s it!! So I’m happy to loan him to help people with CF’s!!!

Are you serious? This can't be real? Your sister is insane!

Yarboosucks · 29/11/2019 19:17

If you have copy of the exchange with the seller, I would report them to the RSPCA. It is irresponsible to sell such animals to someone with no suitable means of keeping them

FelixFelicis6 · 29/11/2019 19:17

What a bloody idiot of a sister you have...

Prevegen4U · 29/11/2019 19:19

I just read that the seller will show a bit older piglets and say they are the parents. Probably the real parents are great big hogs rooting up the muck behind the barn.

Considermesometimes · 29/11/2019 19:19

Op it would be funny if I wasn't so worried about the quality of life, or lack of for the pigs, you must show her this thread.

Being cruel to animals is not acceptable just because it is christmas. Her neighbours will report her immediately, given she has no outside space apart from a patio and who wants livestock living next door if you are in a semi detached house??!! And secondly she will break her children's hearts when the inevitable happens and they are shipped off.

It is setting a very unhealthy precedent of shock and awe at christmas, what will she get next year noahs ark arriving with two of everything? It is just not remotely sensible. Is she always so over the top?

Tell her to buy a snow machine and turn it on from the top floor if she wants to create excitement, I will never forget my chidren's faces when it started to snow on christmas morning. No animals will be harmed this way and she can use it every year (and not piss off her neighbours too much)

GruciusMalfoy · 29/11/2019 19:20

Has she never smelt a pigsty?! She must be off her head!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 29/11/2019 19:20

Is she Mason Verger?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/11/2019 19:21

Is there any chance she's confused Micro Pigs with Guinea Pigs?

Maybe she means two rotund, chortley fellows in a cage lined with fresh hay are joining you for Christmas vegetable peelings?

Otherwise it's just batshit, right?

bananahood · 29/11/2019 19:23

I think Overshadowed By Pigs would be a fantastic band name. Also YANBU OP. Poor wee pigs Sad

Sparklesocks · 29/11/2019 19:23

Your sister really shouldn’t be responsible for animals if she believes in micro pigs!
As pp have said they grow into full size pigs, and require a decent amount of space. It’s cruel to take them in and then kick them out when they’re no longer tiny. They’re not accessories.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/11/2019 19:24

Also, I live in a semi with a small yardy garden and there's a clausy thing in our deeds saying we can't keep livestock.

Has she checked for similar?

thenightsky · 29/11/2019 19:25

The deeds of my house say I can keep one pig. There's an old broken down Victorian sty at the bottom of the garden.

I still wouldn't.

Nanny0gg · 29/11/2019 19:25

Report to RSPCA

and how distressing for them to be moved all over the place at Christmas.

HandsOffMyRights · 29/11/2019 19:26

There are so many abandoned animals in this world - many that were bought as cute newborns and then dumped because they committed the crime of growing up or were no longer fashionable.

stucknoue · 29/11/2019 19:26

The only pets that I welcome are canine, and then only if my canine likes them!

GCAcademic · 29/11/2019 19:27

Your sister sounds like a complete fool who should never be allowed anywhere near an animal.

dontalltalkatonce · 29/11/2019 19:27

She is batshit!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/11/2019 19:30

What's happening today? What with this and mil banning babies from the table on another thread. Is it a full moon?!

thenightsky · 29/11/2019 19:31

Does she have any idea how badly they can damage you if they bite and they are much stronger than dogs, so her children would be dead before she got to them.

Does anyone else recall a murder, possibly serial killer, many years ago, who was famous for feeding his victims to pigs?

ItsNovemberNotChristmas · 29/11/2019 19:31

I'd be contacting the seller and threatening to report him for selling to unsuitable people. I'd also contact her landlord and tell him her plans, poor bloody animals, she sounds utterly stupid

Arthritica · 29/11/2019 19:32

It's illegal without a licence, it's cruel in a paved yard and that's not adressing how batshit insane it is.

Stop it if you can. Tell the landlord, report the seller, ring the council. It's absolutely awful.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 29/11/2019 19:32

This is the maddest thing I've read for a long time and Op you win the most batshit relative and Christmas thread so far.

I really hope someone talks some sense into your sister. I thought everyone now knew that there is no such thing as micro pigs.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/11/2019 19:33

@thenightsky wasn't that Brick Top in Snatch?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/11/2019 19:34

Did anyone else think this was going to be about humans with terrible table manners from the title?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/11/2019 19:34

Does she know how many children were killed by pigs in the medieval period?
Their pigs were smaller than ours, too.
