To say no to visiting pigs for Christmas??

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 18:02

My sister wants to buy my niece and nephew micro pigs for Christmas. They are coming to stay with us for Christmas so she wants to know if she can bring them with her!!!
AIBU to say no because

  • we don’t want pigs running around our house partly due to we have no idea (and neither does she) if They will be chewers/poo everywhere/cry all night plus they are tiny and will be at danger of being stood on
  • we have a 3 bed semi, with 9 people, Xmas tree, extra chairs etc it’s already going to be crowded enough and we don’t have the space to put a pig pen anywhere - the conversatory is already taken over by the guinea pigs cage. (C&C open type)
  • I don’t agree with animals being given as Christmas presents as Christmas is busy and chaotic and full of noise and lights and wrapping paper and choas. I believe a new pet needs to be introduced to a family in a calm and serene environment where they can get used to each other and the animal can retreat to a safe place when they need too
  • I also don’t think any animal should go an3 hour journey unless absolutely necessary or they have got used to car journeys
  • you need a permit to move pigs to another premises and I think are them not allowed to move them again for 20 days!!!
  • Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I don’t want it overshadowed by pigs!
  • we will all be drinking (as is the nature of Xmas day) so I don’t think we should be in charge of tiny piglets when no one knows exactly what they are doing with them.

On a positive note I have found out that DH is the perfect mumsnetter husband, his response was ‘fuck no, that’s all you need to say, just no, don’t need to justify it, we say no that’s it!! So I’m happy to loan him to help people with CF’s!!!

Puts a whole new twist on pigs in blankets.......

Havaina · 29/11/2019 18:50

Guinea pigs and micro pigs in the house? FIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHT!!!

I would report her to the RSPCA if this is illegal.

Selmababies · 29/11/2019 18:50

This thread is the most batshit thing I’ve read in my two years of Mumsnetting. OP your SIL is a lunatic.

I agree. Apart from maybe the mil today who's refusing to allow a high chair at Christmas lunch for a weaning child on the basis that it'll exclude an 8 week old baby.

It all goes to prove that there's a lot of fruitcakes around at Christmas...

Drum2018 · 29/11/2019 18:51

Tell her of course she can bring them as it will save you buying pigs in blankets - tell her yourself and Dh are already reading up on butchering skills.

ALongHardWinter · 29/11/2019 18:52

She lives in a 3 bed roomed semi with a small back garden, and she is getting 2 pigs?! Sorry, but she sounds totally crazy. As for having them in your house while she visits.....Have you any idea how awful pig urine smells? Envy (not envy)

BettysLeftTentacle · 29/11/2019 18:54

Your sister is a very stupid woman.

IDontDrinkTea · 29/11/2019 18:55

What is happening with in laws on mumsnet today?! First the mil who won’t let a child sit in a high chair. Then a sil who wants to bring pigs... the world has gone mad

Fcukthisshit · 29/11/2019 18:56

This is up there with the most ridiculous posts ever.

Just say no.

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 18:57

Think this is the first thread I’ve started where everyone has fully agreed with me!!! Grin

KarmaStar · 29/11/2019 18:57

NO animal should be given for Christmas!😕

Winterdaysarehere · 29/11/2019 18:57

Text her you have bought the wool for the blankets.
And email the breeder sending her pics of dsis 's back garden. Threaten to report her - surely she has to ensure her animals go to suitable homes?

HollowTalk · 29/11/2019 19:00

Anyone thinking of being a landlord has just changed their mind after reading this. She's a lunatic, OP.

pooboobsleeprepeat · 29/11/2019 19:02

Your sister is a dick. Pigs aren’t friendly little cute pets. Poor pigs will probably be disposed of after a couple of months when they can’t cope. Wtf is wrong with people!!

Wakingupnow · 29/11/2019 19:02

I refer your sister to this

Yetanotherwinter · 29/11/2019 19:02

This must be a joke.

mogtheexcellent · 29/11/2019 19:06

2% say YABU though. Probably nethuns.

HappyHammy · 29/11/2019 19:08

I'd report her to her landlord and the council. Poor piggies.

custardbear · 29/11/2019 19:09

She's in a 3 bed semi that's rented?! Ffs your sister is insane if she thinks this is ok from any angle - mainly including the landlord! Pigs STINK and they're noisy and need space, mud, roaming space - I'd be surprised if the breeder allowed her to buy them!

theoldtrout01876 · 29/11/2019 19:10

my friend got a 3lb piglet, it was bullied and harassed by the cats and chickens. Poor wee thing was so sad, slept on a teddybear. 9 months later said 3lb piglet is close to 600lbs. Her name is Petunia and shes a love. My friend happens to have a farm though and Petunia lives there now. By the time she was 3 months old she was knocking people over wanting petted and just her general excitement at seeing you.
Pigs are great but definitely not house pets.

drspouse · 29/11/2019 19:10

Who are the 2% that said YABU?
I guess they can have the pigs to stay.

Ponoka7 · 29/11/2019 19:11

This actually isn't funny.

Most responsible breeders time their piglets for spring. They only allow adoption on completion of a pig keeping course, or proven experience.

These pigs, who are as intelligent as dogs, are going to suffer in her care.

Also, she needs to realise that giving them scraps is illegal and could spark a health hazard.

Who is she going to pass them to when she needs to go away etc or when she's bored if them? There's laws around killing them.

OP the family shouldn't be aiding and abetting this. You should be reporting.

Haffdonga · 29/11/2019 19:11

Someone I know had a so-called micro pig. It grew so large that one day it got completely stuck in their downstairs loo and couldn't get out. They had to have an entire wall knocked down, costing thousands. The pig ended up as bacon moving to a farm.

Gazelda · 29/11/2019 19:15

Wait. What?

Is she mad?! Does her landlord know? Do her kids like pigs? How will the pigs exercise? What will they eat? Where will they sleep? Do her council allow pig muck in their refuse bins? What about the neighbours?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 29/11/2019 19:15

I grew up one a farm and absolutely adore pigs, but we also had a vicious fucker that would have killed you when she’d get the rage. We were never permitted to be near her and were told never to pass the field if she was near the hedge. I swear this beast would nearly roar and attack the gate if you passed. She is a fucking prat and has no idea what she’s getting herself into. Does she have any idea how badly they can damage you if they bite and they are much stronger than dogs, so her children would be dead before she got to them.

Check the council bylaws. I very strongly suspect you will find that she will not be permitted to keep livestock in a residential area.

recycledbottle · 29/11/2019 19:16

I'd tell her she can't come to your house. If you say no to pigs she will probably just leave them somewhere so I'd say no full stop because she needs to look after them in her own home
