To say no to visiting pigs for Christmas??

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 18:02

My sister wants to buy my niece and nephew micro pigs for Christmas. They are coming to stay with us for Christmas so she wants to know if she can bring them with her!!!
AIBU to say no because

  • we don’t want pigs running around our house partly due to we have no idea (and neither does she) if They will be chewers/poo everywhere/cry all night plus they are tiny and will be at danger of being stood on
  • we have a 3 bed semi, with 9 people, Xmas tree, extra chairs etc it’s already going to be crowded enough and we don’t have the space to put a pig pen anywhere - the conversatory is already taken over by the guinea pigs cage. (C&C open type)
  • I don’t agree with animals being given as Christmas presents as Christmas is busy and chaotic and full of noise and lights and wrapping paper and choas. I believe a new pet needs to be introduced to a family in a calm and serene environment where they can get used to each other and the animal can retreat to a safe place when they need too
  • I also don’t think any animal should go an3 hour journey unless absolutely necessary or they have got used to car journeys
  • you need a permit to move pigs to another premises and I think are them not allowed to move them again for 20 days!!!
  • Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I don’t want it overshadowed by pigs!
  • we will all be drinking (as is the nature of Xmas day) so I don’t think we should be in charge of tiny piglets when no one knows exactly what they are doing with them.

On a positive note I have found out that DH is the perfect mumsnetter husband, his response was ‘fuck no, that’s all you need to say, just no, don’t need to justify it, we say no that’s it!! So I’m happy to loan him to help people with CF’s!!!

Did anyone else think this was going to be about humans with terrible table manners from the title?

Yes! I thought we'd plunged new depths of in-law insults Grin

PlumsGalore · 29/11/2019 19:38

I’d dog her in to the landlord tbh. It is so cruel for her to even consider this. Is she usually so stupid?

Not only that, it will be about a week before her neighbours find out and tell the council.

thenightsky · 29/11/2019 19:38

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon

No... definitely a real life murderer. Many, many years ago. I'm sure I remember my grandfather talking about him when we kids (and I'm 60) used to hang over the fence putting our hands out to stroke the piggies. There was always a conversation about how a pig will eat every little bit of you Shock

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 29/11/2019 19:39

I'm just trying to imagine my response if my sis said she wanted to buy micro pigs for Christmas for my kids and could she bring some on a car journey so we could see them?!

It'd go along the lines of the MNetty response:
"Girl, you on glue?!" Grin

RolytheRhino · 29/11/2019 19:42

I hope you can convince her it's a bad idea. Good luck.

Also, see if you can find out enough about the seller to report him to both the RSPCA and trading standards.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 29/11/2019 19:42

@notacooldad
Oops I tapped on YABU!
I mean that your not being UR!

So you're responsible for the 1% saying YABU then, was wondering what type of batshit thought it was a good idea, thought it must have been the OP's sister who'd seen the thread lol

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 29/11/2019 19:44

Does anyone else recall a murder, possibly serial killer, many years ago, who was famous for feeding his victims to pigs?

The IRA were suspected of doing that to at least one of their victims, so it’s not that uncommon. Pigs will eat absolutely anything, including their own young if they’re ill.

myself2020 · 29/11/2019 19:47

I grew up in the countryside. Pigs are very intelligent animals - but also really dangerous. have a look at their teeth, and their weight...
only an absolute idiot would let children be with them without very close supervision, and they are very definitely not house pets.
No way!

ActualHornist · 29/11/2019 19:50

YADNBU.

You need to have a serious talk with her. Don't mince your words. She is risking so much for this ridiculous idea of a 'present' - if she keeps the pigs, she will be thrown out of her house for sure. If she doesn't, she may be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

Is she normally so stupid?

ActualHornist · 29/11/2019 19:52

@thenightsky you're thinking of Robert Pickton, Canadian who would pick up prostitutes, rape and murder them and feed them to his pigs. One woman who got away was not believed so he murdered a few more before they caught up with him.

Or possibly you're thinking of Mason Verger who Hannibal Lector persuaded to eat his own face!

ememem84 · 29/11/2019 19:53

One of the characters in Hannibal tried to feed Hannibal to a pig if I remember correctly. The book detailed it. So gross.

Pigs are lovely. But absolutely not pets.

That said as a family we all chipped in and bought dhs uncle two piglets for his 50th. He lives in a 3 bed semi. Grew up on a farm. Worked on a farm all his life and kept the pigs there. They were great. So friendly. It was a shame when they were taken away to be made into bacon and sausages

tasty though

percheron67 · 29/11/2019 19:54

Terrible idea! Where are these poor little souls going to end up when she is fed up with them.

rosydreams · 29/11/2019 19:56

tell her if she arrives with pigs the doors getting slammed i dont care if it christmas.

I would ,some people are nuts

OpheliaBee · 29/11/2019 19:56

I’m clinging onto the hope here that maybe she meant guinea pigs?

Motoko · 29/11/2019 19:57

Have you spoken to her yet OP? If she doesn't listen and goes ahead with this, will you report her?

Purpleartichoke · 29/11/2019 19:58

I very briefly considered a pig as a pet. I live somewhere that this is not ridiculous.

I quickly learned that your home most be absolutely toddler proofed at all times if you introduce a pig. They are especially prone to Breaking into cabinets to seek out food and make huge messes in the process.

Do not let these animals into your home.

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 20:03

We’ve said no to them coming here. And will keep saying no if she persists in asking. She says she is waiting for a response from the landlord so I will wait for a few days to see outcome of that. If landlord is crazy and says yes I will detail to her all of my concerns. If that doesn’t work I may contact the seller as they do have a list of requirements on their site before you can buy and discuss with them the suitable of a no grass garden. If they agree that’s not good I will let them know, if they don’t care I will look into reporting it to the relevant authorities.

Do people honestly keep livestock in homes these days? Have we gone back to the Medieval period??

Catmaiden · 29/11/2019 20:07

Is she aware that micro pigs are still classed as Livestock, and hence subject to all the DEFRA farmimg livestock rules?
because they are.
Not pets, Livestock

iswhois · 29/11/2019 20:11

When the poor little pigs outlive their Christmas novelty and they can't care for them I will happily take them. I really will.

Your DH is right though, NO is an answer, a reason is not needed

Nat6999 · 29/11/2019 20:17

Tell her you have been gifted a sausage making course & all the equipment & you are looking forward to demonstrating your new skills. She is batshit crazy, does she know that pigs can eat humans, bones & all, I hope she sleeps with one eye open.

Beautiful3 · 29/11/2019 20:27

No way, why would you want a micro pig pooping and weeing every where?!?! Just say no thanks!

Owlsintowels · 29/11/2019 20:27

Surely there is no way any landlord would allow someone to have two pigs as house pets? Surely? It's inconceivable?!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/11/2019 20:28

She wants the glory of presenting the pigs to her children on Christmas Day? Will she then equally accept the misery of the pigs having to be given up within a week or two when the 'glory' rubs off?

The pigs need to be registered... and they eat a lot.

Your sister is a Christmas Twat and stupid to boot.

mumwon · 29/11/2019 20:29

apple sauce
for goodness sake - tell her to get guinea pigs
they are fun the dc will love them
they aren't so expensive
& they wont grow to the size of a small house & eat her dc (although its possible some on mn might contemplate feeding their (not so)dh to them Grin at least a couple of threads might lead one to think that this is a distinct possibility plus a few mil & sil… & the odd daft sister Grin
