Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

Just had the most theatrical thunderstorm - tree fell down and blocked the road!

Watched Ex Machina on iPad in the bar during storm while consuming snacks. Great film. Our funky interior designed hotel room is a white painted version of Caleb's cell in some ways. Hoping they have built a male AI sentient service bot out the back to entertain us this evening.

The new hotel sounds lovely , personally I'd avoid anything that had 'hike' in the title , particularly in the temperatures out there at the moment.

Looks lovely! Hope the new hotel is living up to your first impressions.

LIZS · 06/08/2017 19:55

Looks familiar! There is shortish hike up to sone waterfalls beyond the powerstation. Maybe not in 30+ degrees though, but cooler once you're there. If you or dc fancy trying watersports - sailing, windsurf, canoes etc - walk along the lakeside path towards Torbole and there is a hire/school by the Hotel Du Parc et Au Lac, and a nice shady spot to watch from.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/08/2017 20:27

I recognise that power station! There is a walk behind it, which can either be short or you can go right up to the top of the hill. We took the short walk, as was a heatwave when we were there too.

We also did the waterfall walk, can get a bus part way.

We also did boat trips to a couple of other towns on the lake and did the cable car up the mountain.

We also walked to Torbole where the wind builds up at the same time every day which is when all the windsurfers appear. There was a very nice restaurant there on the lake front.

I noticed this about the place where we stay in Italy. It gets to a certain temperature, usually at around 09.00-09.30, and the crickets start up. Clouds start to build above the mountains from midday til a couple of half-arsed thunderclaps or a few drops of rain at ~14.30. Swallows appear for a drink (on the wing) from the pool from around 15.00. It's like the Hungergames' games makers are flicking switches.

Tonight's dinner report. Grilled tuna, shrimp, lake fish and vegetables sitting by Lake Garda. Lovely breezy, balmy evening after the total carnage that was the thunderstorm (twigs and bits of tree everywhere, broken decorative pots). Glass of Prosecco and a decaf espresso in the bar while DH read his thriller and I read the new Harry Potter. Can't get the bits of hand washing dry that I did so DS3 sleeping in his pants tonight as PJs damp. Generally though a very nice evening.

You might be able to claim from your credit card company. Under the law, if a supplier provides either goods or services that aren't as they should be you can claim a refund from the credit card company, and they take it up with the company - in this case the hotel.

It only became public knowledge after Freddie Laker collapsed. All the people that had paid more than £100 by credit card got their money back. The others didn't.

For the children on here, Freddie Laker took on BA and lost. By dirty tricks BA forced him to the wall. Think he won in court against them as he had proof of their actions. When Branson set up Virgin airline, Freddie Laker acted as his advisor as Branson was also taking on BA.

sockunicorn · 20/08/2018 23:43

OP, why didnt you ever post on tripadvisor? you (rightly) complained that the reviews were all good when the hotel was a shithole but neither you or Patsy have left negative reviews to warn people?
