Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

Did you pay by credit card? If so there extra consumer protection for services not being as expected.

BoffinMum · 03/08/2017 08:44

Hotel is a bit calmer and more civilised today but given that this is the first proper night's sleep I have been able to get since Sunday that may have something to do with it. Patsy made me drink two Mojitos and I think they sedated me somehow.

Duinrell is fab. My 16 year old is campaigning to return next year Smile

sandynotpebbly · 03/08/2017 09:07

Good luck BoffinMum and Patsy, have enjoyed reading the thread, while feeling bad for you....if that makes sense. Please stand your ground for a refund/ to leave early

PosiePootlePerkins · 03/08/2017 09:42

We hated Duinrell. Very very busy especially the water park, loads of rude kids just pushing their way past to get to the slides etc, we camped and the field was very crowded. Maybe I am just getting old, I can't tolerate crowds for very long.

Great to thread.

Worst animation I ever saw was at a campsite Brittany, where they had a mini circus with a bored collie on a tightrope.

You lost sympathy when you said you hated Neilson! You are obviously hard to please

StiffyByng · 03/08/2017 10:20

Oh, BoffinMum, I'm so sorry to read this thread. Over the years, under many name changes for me, you have been a fellow Kinderhotel recommender - you may even have been the person who got me started - and now this. I'm glad Patsy helped though. I hope The Management kick their arse.

@Davros, care to share where you had your bad Austrian experience? I am pondering booking an implausibly cheap Kinderhotel for skiing next year and it seems to have decent reviews but this thread has freaked me out! (You'll probably say one I've stayed in and loved but I can cope with that.)

I looked on tripadvisor at the photo's from your hotel Boffin and it looks remarkably shite. And Lake Garda looks as boring as hell. Maybe its a MN thing.

NinonDeLenclos · 03/08/2017 11:09

Lake Garda is stunning.

Scuze double pos, pics didn't seem to have come out in the first one.

BoffinMum · 03/08/2017 11:24

I had had three Neilson holidays. Two were terrific and one was horrid as they had too many people on site competing for resources. And yes, I am difficult to please but given the fact the cost of these holidays is now £5000 to £10,000 I don't see why any of us should put up with sleepless nights and empty buffets. Seriously, guys.

I would recommend Lake Ledro itself to any MNetter as it's got lots to do and is an absolutely charming spot. An apartment near the lake would make for a super holiday indeed, I think. There are lots of little supermarkets and little museums/day trips and nice eateries, plus the lake is clean and very pleasant for swimming, not too cold.

Stiffy, I had a cheap ski holiday in a Kinderhotel twice and it was great both times, really great. DM me with location?

StiffyByng · 03/08/2017 11:36

Will do, BM. I've had a couple of very good ones myself but this one is literally half the price of the others (2k euros for six of us for the week) so obviously one wonders what the catch is.

ssd · 03/08/2017 11:47

those pics look great ninon, the pics from boffins hotel look boring, maybe they are just rubbish pics

FatherJemimaRacktool · 03/08/2017 12:16

How was the breakfast buffet this morning? Still can't get over those pics from yesterday.

user1498726699 · 03/08/2017 12:41

We had this the year before last with Euro camp just outside Venice. The pics in the brochure weren't anything close to what we got - a filthy, boiling hot (air con not available) stinking, 20 year old lodge with a shower that leaked out of the bathroom and into the lounge area when used and toilet that wouldn't flush, whereas the pics were of all the brand spanking new shiny ones with air con as standard. The Staff took the view that we were fussing over nothing and I had to kick up a stink for 4 days before they begrudgingly moved us to one of the lodges in the brochure. We literally could not sleep because of the heat in there, it was a nightmare and trying to have a cold shower meant flooding the place.

I would do as a PP said and cancel card that guarantees the booking and go. The holiday company obviously doesn't have the morals to give you what you paid for so why should you have the morals to stay?

TheHeartOfTeFiti · 03/08/2017 13:12

Ah okay you've got me back with having enjoyed 2 neilson holidays. Where was the bad one?

Pastyandacustardslice · 03/08/2017 16:43

They knocked €20 off our bill for 3 of us skipping dinner last night.

That's a 4 course dinner for 3 people!

Confused
LIZS · 03/08/2017 16:46

That's probably more than cost price though! if one meal is 7e what on earth is the rest of the rate covering ? Confused

badbadhusky · 03/08/2017 16:48

To be fair, based on your pictures & reviews of meals to date, that's probably generous & a fair reflection of ingredient costs. It sounded dreadful.
