Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

I think that your DH ringing HQ tomorrow would be a good start. They may not be able to find you somewhere else but if they will at least waive the T&C so you only pay for the nights you have stayed then that will help.

And in the meantime you get yourself around the local area to see if there are any other nice looking places that you could ask if they have any vacancies. If you hear English being spoken, ask them where they are staying and if they like it and see if you can get in there. I am sure with a bit of effort you will find somewhere.

I have heard of this happening a fair bit with direct bookings, and thats why they are cheaper, because there is no back up. Next time book a package.

ihatethecold · 31/07/2017 21:24

Can you contact the camping sites in the area to see if a tent or caravan is available?
Whereabouts are you on lake Garda and do you have a car?

lalalonglegs · 31/07/2017 21:24

Tbh, I doubt whether there will be much wriggle room on the accommodation. However, you may be able to negotiate down to B&B and eat out the rest of your stay (although I would warn you that most Italian restaurants only provide fizzy drinks or mineral water as soft options - occasionally you get very thick, syrupy bottled fruit juice but it's not like the stuff you would be used to in the UK).

Garda is a really lovely destination, so try not to let the hotel spoil your stay. There are lots of gorgeous towns and villages, little beaches, water sports, walking etc and Verona is very easy to visit from there. I hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your stay.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 31/07/2017 21:25

I sympathise OP!

I'm further south than you (near Venice) and camping. Although the site is lovely, as was the first Italian site we stayed in this trip, they are obsessed with bloody kiddies discos and 'animation' at full volume. The noise levels are just not for me!

Anyway, that's not helpful! Hope you get sorted asap.

PyongyangKipperbang · 31/07/2017 21:25

Oh and when you get back, contact the website that advertised it and kick up a fuss.

KitCatBisCat · 31/07/2017 21:26

That is shit. I'm so sorry.

Not much fun but take photos of everything, recordings of the noise and notes about each conversation you have with the manager. Then try to seek some sort of compensation on your return if your husband has no luck with the HQ tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'd keep pestering for a less noisier room. Fair enough, it's quietened now, but your hotel room should be a place to relax at any time of the day on holiday.

Try to get refunded for as much of the money as you can just now and switch hotels.

Or just come home if possible. No point staying there two weeks if it's making you miserable. Gutting to know that you've paid all that money for such a short, crap stay.

Make sure you warn all others to stay clear on review sites.

Rachie1986 · 31/07/2017 21:26

No advice but sorry it's not turned out how you were expecting - hope you get some resolution tomorrow x

BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 21:28

I don't think insurance is any help if you are basically a bit too tired and slightly up yourself to enjoy a particular hotel at a given time. If there was an insurance for that it would surely be perfect for many a MNetter like me. In fact was it not the reason for MN being founded? A shit holiday inspiring a member of our sisterhood to heights of communication?

LockedOut's plan sounds great.

Rachel0Greep · 31/07/2017 21:30

Oh you poor thing, it sounds crap. Hopefully pointing it out and saying that HQ will be contacted might lead to some improvements.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/07/2017 21:30

There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke

That seems more or less normal?

BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 21:31

We are not near the lake, it took about 30 minutes in the hire car (they said it was 15 mins away). We are in a place called Ledro.

BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 21:31

Barbara, DS3 is happy with an orange juice or milk. He doesn't like fizzy drinks.

SolomanDaisy · 31/07/2017 21:32

Oh, it's a kinderhotel. I think if you ask for a transfer to another of their hotels they will probably do it. But I think you may have just discovered they aren't your thing. Their main benefit is the stuff for young children.

MaybeDoctor · 31/07/2017 21:33

We too passed a hellish night in Lake Garda - the room had a flat roof, the aircon hadn't been used for weeks and altogether it was hotter than Satan's underpants. Sleep was nearly impossible.

Does la signora have a rather rigid seating plan at breakfast by any chance? It was the firm telling-off for sitting at the wrong table the next morning that finally sent us fleeing from the hotel, whither we knew not...In the end we drove on to Brescia and threw ourselves on the mercy of the Ufficio di Turismo.

Riva del Garda struck me as quite pleasant, if you do try to go somewhere else.

BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 21:33

All the hotels are independently owned so not sure how much leverage HQ has but it's something.

Maybe if we shit ourselves in our room they will throw us out Grin

I mean, a lot of the cost is in stuff like the free childcare for babies. So you've paid extra for stuff that isn't really a good fit for your family.

BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 21:34

I have stayed in loads of Kinderhotels! This one is so small compared to the rest, and the standards are much lower.

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 21:36

It has a kids club for children from 3 - DS3 is 8. But looking at it it's not on the same scale at all as the other ones and there don't seem to be as many activities.

Very hot in this room. Stinks of fag smoke. Eyes watering a bit.

Oh @BoffinMum I read this thread and then suddenly realised it was you! I'm so sorry you and your family do not deserve this. Nothing much more helpful to add but enormous hugs Alpaca xxx

ChickenVindaloo2 · 31/07/2017 21:38

And people (colleagues) slag me off when I decide just to have yet another staycation...

BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 21:39

Just looking up those places, Otters
