Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

At least Lake Ledro looks nice. It might comfort you some to know that at home it's cold, grey and raining. Seriously, I would kill for some Italian weather right now, but not the beige food - what on earth would you do if you were gluten free like I am ????? I don't blame you for eating out. Italian food (or German food, for that matter), is so good that it's a crime to do to it what that vile hotelier does. And the website makes it look nice too. I'm not surprised you were misled.

Love that your fellow Mner is now fondly know as Patsy! It was Pasty wasn't it? Grin

FUNM · 02/08/2017 18:53

Do not despair, and do not go home. The area is stunning and you need a few weeks to explore. Have PM'd you a list of places :)

Gulag Garda

Oh mudder, farder

I was still smiling at 'hotter than Satan's underpants' when Boffin met up with Patsy Pasty. Classic thread. Gin Star

Sparklingbrook · 02/08/2017 19:08

I love this thread. Anyone else a bit Envy?

AFingerofFudge · 02/08/2017 19:12

How the heck I've only just seen this thread given the amount of time I've been on Mumsnet the last few days I don't know. It's brilliant.
I am on holiday myself, but thankfully in apartment in Paris so we can do our own catering. However we are on a tight budget so have had a number of meals at Flunch (fast food type place). Even Flunch can come up with better fayre than your hotel boffin!
And of course, there's always the boulangeries 😋

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 02/08/2017 19:22

Yes I am Sparklinbrook. It's pissing it down here, and very, very windy.Angry

We NEED some sunshine!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/08/2017 19:24

Just a sec ... according to the Trip Advisor entry, the place has a Certificate of Excellence

What the hell's that all about then?? Confused

CharlotteLV · 02/08/2017 19:25

Definitely insist on moving - either rooms, or hotels. We arrived at our apartment in Italy last week to find it shrouded in scaffolding and netting, and we just walked out. It was awful, and it felt equally awful to leave something we'd spent so long choosing (particularly when I hadn't even checked the cancellation policy) but after we'd done it we were so pleased. We found a cheap hotel on booking.com and booked it direct, and they were lovely. Don't put up with it. The Italians wouldn't! Good luck.

TheDailyWail · 02/08/2017 19:47

I'm glad you found your silver lining (Pasty Patsy). Fingers crossed for a better second hotel.

notapizzaeater · 02/08/2017 19:55

Enjoy your meal out, sounds shocking :-(

Hillfarmer · 02/08/2017 19:57

I just tweeted Gerhard Strasser at the kinder hotels twitter account, saying how much I was enjoying the thread!

AyUpMiDuck · 02/08/2017 20:09

you will need plenty of evidence to claim. take videos, make a formal complaint . note down dates times and name of persons at hotel that you speak to. Good Luck.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 02/08/2017 20:11

I've stayed in a number of well reviewed but slightly crap Italian hotels, all with 80s decor. None so crap as yours though. Thank goodness for Mr and Mrs Patsy!

FUNM · 02/08/2017 20:17

Masybe contact The Telegraph and they can revise their first article :)

I taste it when people say they'll give a bad review in return for money off etc. Either it's not true, in which case it's horrible for the owner or it is true, in which case they deserve as bad review and the next traveller doesn't get warned and has a rubbish holiday!

BoffinMum · 02/08/2017 21:04

I met another mum in the laundry room before dinner and she hates it too, and they refused to pay for the food and they are esting out just like us. They wanted to move but he blocked them as well. I think I see a pattern here.

We also susoect he puts the Italians in a different building away from the racket,
