Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

Great to hear that new hotel is such an improvement. Yay to salvaged holiday !

BoffinMum · 05/08/2017 17:01

I have been shopping with DH and purchased two MaxMara tops and a pair of MaxMara trousers at 50% off. The nice shop assistant ladies went to a great deal of trouble to find me something that actually fitted. If you are in the Riva del Garda area make a point of visiting them as it is an excellent shop and the assistants are amazing. There is also an underwear factory shop nearby with good bargains.

For security reasons I won't post anything too identifying while we are here but expect some lovely sightseeing shots imminently.

Currently drinking prosecco in my private garden looking forward to a swim shortly.

I love a happy ending. Grin

badbadhusky · 05/08/2017 17:59

Oh Boffin, sounds like you have ditched to air-conditioned loveliness at just the right time if its 36C. Your new hotel sounds amazing - please name it (if you are positive about your overall experience) once you get home.

StiffyByng · 05/08/2017 19:40

That's not a clown. That's Smiley. Chizz.

magimedi · 05/08/2017 19:42

So pleased to log in & read about a happy ending!

Enjoy the rest of your holiday, Boffin.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 05/08/2017 19:52

Oh my god HOW did I not find this thread earlier? Sitting here, boobing baby to sleep (sorry couldn't resist Grin) howling to myself. I'm actually crying. Baby, unsurprisingly, is refusing to sleep on my gently jiggling jubblies. I'm only on the 1st of august so far and am so excited to read the rest! Hope the holiday has cheered up Edina and patsy (I shall find out soon) and thanks for providing such entertainment! Best. Thread. Ever.

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 05/08/2017 20:47

Phhhhffff

That is not much of a clown!
In fairness his green top wearing minders do look enthusiastic or maybe they have they hands up in the air as they are surrending?

Thank you for posting this shot.

Have a wonderful week I. What sounds like an amazing new hotel!!!

BoffinMum · 05/08/2017 22:26

I think Smiley has probably taken them all hostage.

Right, dinner report. Sat in garden under twinkly lights. Special menu entirely based on beer. Beer carpaccio. Buckwheat mezza luna in buffalo milk and beer. Grilled and sliced beef with a beer sauce and roasted chip things. Crystallised pineapple with a sorbet and beer sauce on top, I was slightly doubtful at the beginning but totally converted by the end. Kids behaved impeccable and stayed up late (they did not eat the beer stuff). Kids in bed - eldest actually had a shower without me nagging. Drinks in atmospheric bar. Back to air conditioned room. Fantastic evening.

PS Met a German doctor in the swimming pool but he's probably not a MNetter. He did recommend a great hike from the 'Crown of Garda' though. Anyone done it?

Is that the new hotel's restaurant, Boffin, or are you still eating out? Sounds fab either way.

Can we have a breakfast comparison tomorrow too?

Rachel0Greep · 05/08/2017 22:36

Great update! So glad you got to move!

BoffinMum · 05/08/2017 22:38

Hotel Restaurant. It is unusually good but a bit pricey so we can't really eat here every night. There seem to be about 50 restaurants nearby so not an issue.

New hotel sounds lovely. Beer based menu sounds, um, interesting!

mogulfield · 05/08/2017 22:57

This thread has made me laugh so much I'm surprised I didn't wake DH up! Glad it's all worked out for you boffin!

Murpher · 06/08/2017 00:58

I've read and re-read this thread.

What's the funny part?

Why is it the Best. Thread. Ever.?

Doofletch · 06/08/2017 05:21

This thread has absolutely cracked me up! Have been enjoying it through a long night of teething with a 6 month old and it's kept my sanity!!!!!!!
Glad the new hotel is so lovely Boffin. Hope you all get to chill and enjoy this week.

UrsulaPandress · 06/08/2017 05:35

Maybe it's just not your thing Murpher.

Beer menu sounds very outre.

BoffinMum · 06/08/2017 08:37

I am with you on that, Murpher, but I think it was the fact that Patsy/Pasty and I had rooms next door to each other and became the Patsy and Edina of the disappointed hotel guest world. Although we wee more like Thelma and Louise on the pedalos.

This is how I imagine boffinmum and patsy looked at each other before boffinmum left the hotel.

murpher without being sychophantic or blowing smoke up her ass I've found boffin's way of describing the hell of her holida very funny. I also think it's brilliant that there were 2 people from mumsnet in the same hellish hotel. But I think I'm easily pleased.

donajimena · 06/08/2017 09:50

murpher what mogul said. Different strokes for different folks n all that!
I don't find Jimmy Carr funny but plenty of people do.
