Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

Good point :o

A couple of posters have mentioned "animation" at the hotels? I'm not sure what that means, can anyone explain please? Thank you.

Branleuse · 01/08/2017 15:45

Animation means shows and games put on by the campsite. Like when they do dances and get kids to do the conga etc etc

PissedOffNeighbour · 01/08/2017 15:47

At our campsite the animation was provided by a group of Dutch students employed by the park to provide entertainment. E.g. Childrens' disco, aqua aerobics in the pool, water polo matches etc etc. Unbelievable we came away with a cd with all of their favourite kiddies eurotrash on it to play in the car..,

allegretto · 01/08/2017 15:50

Pissedoffneighbour - snap! My kids still sing the Dutch babydance hits very fondly.

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/08/2017 15:51

When looking for a hotel before I go to trip advisor I look at how the hotel describes itself.

If the first sentence is about where it is. AVOID.
If it was a great hotel it would start with how great the rooms are etc

For those who love the gentle climate of the lake but look for the tranquility and pureness of the mountains of the Trentino region, then Lake Ledro is the ideal alternative to the crowds of Lake Garda, just 15 km away

This is the first sentence for the hotel.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/08/2017 16:02

Mumsnet on the road Grin how incredible!

Olivers that is a good tip.

listsandbudgets · 01/08/2017 16:05

Oh God ... Lake Garda. I went there when I was inter railing in my distant youth. My purse got nicked. The fairly crappy hotel I'd booked wouldn't let me stay without a credit card. The Italian police were disinterested in my purse and very interested in my tits though they did eventually issue me with the appropriate paperwork.

I finally made my weary way to the station caught a local train to Chaisso which unexpectedly turned out to be in Switzerland and then sprinted across the station to catch an overnight train to Rome never to return to Lake Como and its beautiful environs again.

I hope your holiday gets better :)

Happy to have bought the clowns to your attention 😄

The hotel website keeps on giving!

And I quote

And for culture lovers the pole museum at Mart Du Rovereto is a difficult temptation to resist.

Have images of our 2 intrepid MNetters marching off unable to resist a trip to a pole dancing museum!

And if you check out their photo gallery there is a photo of family pillow fight! Mum is not to be seen but dad looks ready to whack his offspring. Probably driven to it by the terrible holiday!

Am so happy my discovery of the evening with

Slimthistime · 01/08/2017 16:12

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 01/08/2017 16:13

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 16:29

We are now sitting on the banks of Lake Ledro which is gorgeous in fantastic sunshine sipping drinks and bitching happily about the hotel whilst reading the thread.

FatherJemimaRacktool · 01/08/2017 16:53

Glad things are looking up Boffin and Patsy. Whatever you do, stay away from the table of sinister meat; I suspect this may be where all the previous disgruntled guests went...
