Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

We stayed at the Majestic Palace (part of sun hotels I think) in Malcesine last year. Really nice food and place. Might be worth seeing if they have availability. Was so nice we went back 2 years running

LIZS · 01/08/2017 12:49

If you decide to move accommodation might be worth asking on here for any feedback just in case. Also please leave a review on MN so noone else makes the same choice unwittingly!

LIZS · 01/08/2017 12:50

And at thought of clowns at dinner.

"enthusiastic evening with clowns"

Grin Grin I'm howling here, Boffin and Patsy (which is now your name btw whether you like it or not) PLEASE take one for the team before you flee and report back on that one!

"enthusiastic evening with clowns"

Holy fuck have they never seen It?

BarbaraofSeville · 01/08/2017 13:28

Um, how old and robust are the DCs in question? I don't think dealing with the potential night terrors that the 'enthusiastic evening with clowns' may generate makes for making the best of the rest of the holiday --although it could be good evidence if you decide to complain/sue'.

MN Review: 'The rooms were old fashioned, the food mushy slop and the DC are still in counselling following the terrifying enthusiastic evening with clowns.

Horsemad · 01/08/2017 13:34

enthusiastic evening with clowns

If Tripadvisor is anything to go by, one of them is already waiting for you in the garden. Him and his special suitcase. He wants you to take a look inside.

I've just been RTFT as part of my work avoidance scheme, which is, incidentally, going VERY well and am absolutely ShockShockShock at the turn of events.

Please, please, OP, attend the enthusiastic evening with clowns. You know you want to.

EnthusiasticEveningWithClowns · 01/08/2017 13:47

I'd like to introduce myself. I was FairNotFair. Now I am EnthusiasticEveningWithClowns

Lol, what a coincidence! Loved the 'Gah, I met your husband - come down to the pool moment'.

SouthernComforts · 01/08/2017 14:07

Love that you've found another MNer! Top thread Grin

oooopnorth · 01/08/2017 14:10

Fucking amazing thread Grin

NinonDeLenclos · 01/08/2017 14:31

I'd complain to Kinderhotels together - both families by telephone & by email today. See if they will transfer you to another of their hotels. The hotel has basically lied about their facilities.

I'd then write a stinking review each to post on the website, show the owner, he may offer you a refund to stop you. (That worked for me in the past).

There's no way I'd stay in that place til Friday.

woodhill · 01/08/2017 14:45

What a shame OP. Hope things improve

woodhill · 01/08/2017 14:47

Looks great on website, are the 3 pools nice?

LIZS · 01/08/2017 14:48

Not sure there are many kinderhotels nearby. Even so they are a marketing website, you book direct.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 01/08/2017 14:56

Best of luck OP and Pasty it is maddening when the hotel blurb doesn't match reality.

Gin Gin one each!

MrsPringles · 01/08/2017 14:57

This thread is amazing! What a coincidence Grin

Natsku · 01/08/2017 15:06

Love that there was another MNer next door - what are the odds of that?!

NinonDeLenclos · 01/08/2017 15:10

I assumed they were a chain - never heard of them tbh.

Looking at the website, Kinderhotels claim:

All members are inspected by Germany’s independent product safety consultants, TÜV, use only highly qualified employees and regularly undergo secret quality inspections

The hotel group favours “class over mass” when selecting its member hotels. There may have been nearly 100 Kinderhotels in 1998, but now the numbers have been more or less halved. This reduction ensures that partner hotels are implementing the specified criteria, so that the group can guarantee them. Strict quality control may slow growth, especially in new European Union member countries, but offers guests the greatest possible assurance that their families will receive the best possible care.

By the looks of it they're not just a listings site like Homeaway - they do select their partner hotels. I would be raising hell with them personally and contacting my credit card asap.

PissedOffNeighbour · 01/08/2017 15:27

Literally crying with laughter at the enthusiastic evening wit clowns Grin

We too have had a disasterous stay at Lake Garda - we were staying in one of those fixed Eurocamp tents on a really nice site. However, after the first lovely day, the heavens opened and we had torrential rain for the rest of the week. Water was running through our tent and coming in literally every where. The pool didn't re-open, much to our two DCs distress (although that thankfully did mark the end of the animation around the pool too).

We did manage a lovely trip to Verona in a successful bid to drive away from the rain. Beautiful city.

And also a trip up the mountain in the cable car. That was our last day and it was showery then rather than torrential.

Anyway glad that OP has found a comrade in arms in Patsy (what an amazing coincidence). Hope things improve and you enjoy the rest of your holiday.

^Kinder as in kinderhotel means children in German (in case you didn't realise!)^
