So anyway, he came back into the room, and crouched next to my ear, but there was a hesitancy, a reluctance, that hadn't been there before.

"I'm starting to think that maybe you're going to have to come back next week," he said, "after more oiling. The water was running clear on that last go, but I'm pretty sure that was just the first stage. You've lubricated the first layer, and we've got rid of that, but there's a lot of impacted wax deep down, that I'm afraid we might not be able to shift today." He sounded sad.

"I don't want to do permanent damage," he said.
