Hi everyone, it is really painful for me to join this thread but I am really confused and need some help/advice.

I just found out yesterday that I have a blighted ovum (it's my first pregnancy and I am 6+2 weeks). The doctor said she can see a sac but no yolk sac or fetus and expects me to miscarry within next few weeks. She told me all my options but I felt like she suggested to wait it out to happen naturally.

Obviously I am extremely upset and yesterday after talking to my hubby we decided to let things happen naturally. Today I woke up with minor period like cramps but still no bleeding (I haven't had a single drop of blood since my last period in September).
After reading on the Internet I saw that it took some women weeks to miscarry naturally...I am scared of my emotional state if I wait for weeks and weeks (won't be able to move on until it happens) am just seeking advice from people who went through this? Did you wait or is it better to get a D&C?

BTW The doctore is def off in timing my pregnancy - the report said I am 8 weeks but there is no way that can be true (otherwise I would have been on my period and pregnant!) I am not more than 6 weeks +/- few days....not sure if that means I'll have to wait longer for it to happen...

Thanks in advance for your help

Issy it sounds like we had similar experiences, although I wasn't vomiting.

It's difficult to find the balance between advising people and preparing them for what might happen, and scaring the crap out of them. It seems that for most people, a mc will be like a heavy period with a few clots, no recognisable embryo (which I was scared of). Maybe some cramping, period type pains, but nothing that a couple of paracetamol won't sort. Definitely no tampons, as they are just for absorbing blood, not the other stuff. I'm not keen on towels too but they make them very thin these days, not the bricks they used to be.

If you do get very heavy bleeding - ie pouring out of you or soaking towels in a few minutes (or seconds) or you feel faint at all then contact your EPU straight away. It's unusual, but it happens sometimes (as Issy and I found out). In my case one of the clots had got stuck in my cervix, and the bleeding and diziness virtually stopped as soon as the doc removed it.

By the way, 4 days after my ERPC, I'm feeling fine, up and about, no pain and just the tiniest bit of bleeding. So those of you having the op this week, don't worry the recovery is very quick.

CuppaTeaJanice · 08/11/2010 12:18

Issy what are the symptoms of Asherman's syndrome? I'd like to be aware of what to look out for but really don't want to google it!

IssyStark · 08/11/2010 13:53

Cuppa it is difficult to know how much to say but I was totally unprepared by what happened to me after beng told by the (male) doctor and the hospital leaflet to expect a heavy period and not knowing what was happening to me was in the realms of normal (if less usual) made it seem more scary.

The main symptoms of Asherman's are either lack of periods or very light periods compared to previously, often accompanied by uterine pain.

Have i eck wombat!!! Just rang EPU and asked if i can self refer. They say it's normally GP or A&E, but if i'm spotting/bleeding i can go in. I say, what? I can't? even though i have evidence from the scan on wed to the scan on sat that the pregnancy has definately ended? She says no. I say but if i have a bit of spotting that may be indicative of nothing, i could come in? She said yes sheepishly. Think she realised how ridiculous the system actually is. I could feel myself getting upset on the phone but actually not to do with the pregnancy but more to do with the fact that i'm hitting constant brick wall mjade of red tape and 'protocol'!!!
Gonna get back on the GP's back now.

Star82 · 08/11/2010 14:30

Called the surgery. Whoever was there this morning that i spoke with, isn't there now. Again, the lady has promised she will call me back but the doctor isn't in the surgery until 3!!!

IssyStark · 08/11/2010 14:53

Star, just phone the EPU and tell them you've since had a little bit of spotting since you called earlier if you hAve no joy getting through to the GP. They won't be able to tell when examining you and you can hit them with the other scan report when you get there.

Sorry you're having to battle with this. In comparision all my GPs, particualrly my latest, have been complete darlings as has my EPU (it even once stayed open late on the last day before Christmas closure to see me). I just wish everyone got the same high level of care I've been lucky to have. This postcode lottery thing is crazy and only likely to get worse under the coming reforms.

Star82 · 08/11/2010 15:09

I don't think they'd swallow it issy, seeing as i did say to the EPU lady that my sonographer had hinted that i should tell a porky so they'd see me. I'm digging my heels in on this and not going to lie to fit the system. The system should accomodate the fact that i have a confirmed missed miscarriage rather than symptoms that could be nothing. I think i've just been a square peg in a round hole and would have had this problem in any other PCT. DH's work doctor calling about 4pm so we're hoping he will step in if we don't hear back from my GP at the surgery.

Hope all you other ladies are ok? Will check in again on weds, its weird my last erpc was on the 10/11/07 this one will be the 09/11/10!

I just want this nightmare to be over so I can move on, hate been stuck in the house, feel like a hermit!

IssyStark · 08/11/2010 16:11

Star I'm not so sure you wouldn't fit in elsewhere. As I said before I've been able to get in to my EPU the next day after my own private scans have shown embryonic death. I'm very surprised at your EPUs stance given they'd take you as a self-referal if you'd been bleeding. I could understand them not taking self-referals at all (mine doesn't) but to only take them in certain circumstances seems daft in the extreme.

broughthimroundtotheidea · 08/11/2010 16:11

nurse47 I am glad you have decided to "get it over with," it is the way I deal with things too, I have thrown myself into work today and am definately burying my head in the sand but what is the alternative??

star sorry you are having such a crap time getting a referal, it is disgusting the way miscarriage is handled. When I went to ny GP with spotting on wed they made an appointment for me for the epu for 6 days later!! So spotting doesn't get you an appointment here! Since then the bleeding has started more heavily and I honestly feel that is why they don't see you straight away to give nature time to take its course which is shit and I told them so!

cuppa I also have suspisions about ashermans syndrome having had 2 CS's and light periods ever since. Don't worry about googling it, it's not horrible and is treatable, but it sounds as though it is hard to diagnose as the adhesions don't show up on ultrasounds.

wonnaywomba Mine has started naturally and was slow starting, and is to be honest not as bad as I feared (yet). pads have wings on nowadays and the ones I am using a coping ok. I have passed what I think was ....... and have buried it in my hosta, couldn't bring myself to knowingly flush it.

I am sat waiting for the GP to call baack with the results of my second HCG test, then I will know if I have to face the trauma of having a sad scan, or if as I suspect it has nearly all gone already.

all the best xxxx

broughthimroundtotheidea · 08/11/2010 16:45

Ok so blood results are in.......My HCG result has risen from 9201 to 12367 over 3 days so because they havn't dropped I have to go and have a scan :( was really hoping to avoid it, as I have such happy memories of my scans with DD and DS that I didn't want to tarnish the experience. I guess a d and c might be looming for me too
xxxx

Star82 · 08/11/2010 16:48

Oh ok issy. Thought it was just the general system being difficult. I don't have much experience of how these things work as i've only experienced the NHS when i've delivered babies (but i had a 12 hr discharge so wasn't in too long) and a few a&e visits. Obviously is all about where you are.

Nurse really sorry it's showed this for you too but they seem to be handling it well by getting it over with asap if that's what you wanted. I think i'm going for that option too but scared about the op and any future problems it may create.

GP rang me eventually. Told her the problem. She said "we can't have you waiting around that long, i'll call the EPU". Rang back 5 mins after and said "they were very helpful and said to go straight up before 8pm" She thinks it was unusually smooth so suspect they knew it was me :)
DH out getting treatment on an injury but will go when he's back in just after 65. Got no-one to sit with the kids as my mums at work till 10, dad won't get in til 6.30 and we're an hour away from them. DH's dad is working and his mum doesn't drive and theyre even further away so gonna go up on my own as don't want to drag the children up there.

I assume they will just re scan to get confirmation themselves and then go through my options so nothing majorly going on and i can always relay it back to DH and then call with a decision in the morning. Is this what happened with your appointment nurse ?

Star82 · 08/11/2010 16:53

brought What could be making your hormones continue to rise? It seems strange doesn't it unless this can still happpen?
I have had this issue with flushing too and am worried about what to do. It just seems wrong.

I could do with a massive glass of wine to be honest, but we feel it would be a bit disrespectful if you know what i mean? I sound like a loon!!!!

IssyStark · 08/11/2010 16:56

nurse47 all the best for the ERPC. I also like to get things over and done with - the waiting is driving me barmy1

IssyStark · 08/11/2010 16:59

and brought, hope you are feeling okay and the scan isn't too bad. They should be able to judge from the scan if there is any need for a D&C given that your are already passing stuff naturally, so that at least would give some purpose to it :(

Totallyfloaty35 · 08/11/2010 17:02

Hello everyone,i am so sad to see so many of you from the June threadSad
I was on it at the beginning and had endless scans while waiting to see if a baby would appear in the sac.
I had my full on bleed on Tuesday and i am so tired and dizzy now.I am also still bleeding but much lighter.
I have a scan booked for Thursday, the day my ERPC is booked for,if im not 'clear' i have to still have my op.
However they told me not to eat or drink after midnight, but also to ensure i have full bladder for the scan Hmm
Anyone else feel exhausted or dizzy? I actually feel rather odd.

broughthimroundtotheidea · 08/11/2010 17:03

star I have no idea Confused it is really worrying me they have no where near doubled, which they should have as it was 72 hours between the tests, could it have been ectopic or the one that came out be one of a twin with the other still inside?
By the way dont google what a fetus looks like I feel awful not I just did.

Star82 · 08/11/2010 17:11

Oh brought i've googled everything. I wanted to see what it looked like in case i pass it myself so i'm not too shocked. Do you know what? The GP on the phone asked how i felt in myself and whether i still felt pregnant!! I said well my boobs are still 32F's and sore but that's the only symptom i get. She said that sometimes there can be 2 sacs and one dies but the other makes it or sometimes you can conceive another after you're already pregnant so that's just sent my head swirling and i'm not going to even start thinking of that!!!

Totallyfloaty, is the dizzyness due to loss of blood? Hope you're ok.

I have a little period pain at the tops of my inner thigh so wondering if this could be the beginnings. Not painful just wanting to keep massaging it.

Beesok · 08/11/2010 19:00

Wow I just came home and there are so many posts :) am a bit hungry and exhausted so will read through them in detail later but wanted to moan a bit pleaaaaaseeee :)

As mentioned I had that "extra" scan at my endo's practice on Saturday and seemed like nothing new with the sac stil empty and probably detaching but then today he emails me my hCG levels which are at 27835 and my progesterone is at 62, he said that I quote "it's a grey area" and I need to recheck to see if the levels go down in a week. He also suggested I get another scan.
This is so annoying :( I had already made up my mind about the whole thing and was ready for the D&C or whatever it's called and now this :(
I am not feeling hopeful at all just tired and miserable and in limbo, I feel bad but I just wish this would b eover :(

So should I get that scan?????????
sorry ladies but I don't want to bring this up with anyone - too much explaining but you guys know the situation and are the only people I can talk to about it ;)

sunny got your message thanks - I will respond shortly!

Well to add further confusion, i get to the EPU tonight and have had to go through everything as they were confused by what they had people telling them.
She then gets the book out for scans and i'm down for thursday!! The woman on wednesday gave me a letter with 11 december on it when it was really the 11th november!!
She's apologised and kept saying why didn't you question it. I told her we just assumed she couldn't get through the criteria as she had warned us that they don't see people without bleeding or pain. Also, we do as we're told. We're not people that demand to be seen so took what i was given.
I can wait until thurs so i will do that.

Still have a very mild period pain ache and twinges in inner thight, groin and lower tummy and just went to the toilet and had some jelly-like discharge when i wiped and it was yellow coloured? Not sure what that was.....
