5 Week Low Carb Bootcamp, with added Ubercamp

Morning all!

Just starting the day with a black coffee instead of my usual white one. Not quite sure if I like it or not ...

Anyway, welcome, everyone to this shorter-and-stricter-than-usual Bootcamp Grin

For those of you who are new to low carbing, I strongly suggest that you don't do Ubercamp. It's very strict and restrictive and will be a very, very hard introduction to low carbing. Far better that you get to grips with what it's all about before you also aim to cut out dairy.

For those of you that have low carbed before, you have the option this time around. You can either Bootcamp, which will last for three weeks this time, followed by two weeks of Bootcamp Light, or you can Ubercamp for the first week.

Ubercamp means no dairy (apart from butter). So the rules are the same as for Bootcamp, with this one exception.

Bootcamp Rules

On our Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will find the rules of Bootcamp - along with a whole load of other really important information. Have a good look around it, by clicking on the tabs at the bottom.

Sayra will be updating the spreadsheet this morning, so she will get all your names on it, and when she does, you can then enter your starting weight. As the spreadsheet is shared, you may not wish to confess all

MNHQ are - hopefully! - also setting up another Weight Tracker for us.

As the spreadsheet is shared, you may not wish to confess all there, in which case use the Weight Tracker, as that is private.

So this is the plan this time around:

Week 1 - Ubercamp (for those who are up for the extra challenge
Weeks 2-3 - Bootcamp
Weeks 4-5 - Bootcamp Light

I should warn you that I have taken my big stick out of the cupboard and I am ready and willing to use it ...

Hello everyone, just checking in.

TurnOverTheTv · 21/07/2014 19:25

Bugger,I've just upped my training weights as well Grin

Hattieboomboom · 21/07/2014 20:35

Hi everyone. I just wanted to check my picking in between meals is ok, as it's a real habit of mine - particularly in the afternoons. I'm trying to do ubercamp. This is everything that's passed my lips today (I'm also recording this so I can see for myself):

Green tea
B: 2 egg omelette with mushrooms, cooked in butter
Large black coffee
L: Tuna mayo with baby gem leaves and cucumber
Snacks/picking: Few slices of steamed carrots and broccoli florets, couple of slices of Parma ham, slice of wafer thin ham. 2 strawberries (I know..) Large chunk of Taifun smoked tofu.
I feel like I could do without dinner, but I probably have a steamed salmon fillet with some mayo. I won't have anything with it.

Is this ok?

Hattieboomboom · 21/07/2014 20:36

Oh, and lots of water, at least 2 litres.

BIWI · 21/07/2014 20:37

No carrots or strawberries, Hattie! Especially not at this stage.

Why are you steaming your fish? You need more fat!

Once you're 'in the groove' (and assuming that you're following the rules) you will find that you're no longer hungry in between meals and simply won't need to snack.

How much water have you had?

OP posts:
Hattieboomboom · 21/07/2014 20:40

Oh gawd, and two slices of low carb bread (the almond flour, egg & flax recipe) with butter & marmite. Pretty sure there that's it. No wonder I feel I could do without dinner...

Hattieboomboom · 21/07/2014 20:42

The salmon is ready to eat - but Salmon is am oily fish and I'm adding mayo, so isn't that ok? I had no idea I wasn't allowed carrots so thank you.

trinitybleu · 21/07/2014 20:46

Right, I've had ...

B - 4 eggs scrambled, 2 slices bacon
L - cheese salad, extra light mayo (all I had after the home made disaster)
S - cheese chunks
D - egg salad, full fat mayo (OH went shopping Smile )

Going to have some yogurt later.

I now have full fat yogurt, cooked meats and so on all ready to go.

AND ... 2 litres of vile tap water! Grin

Pisseslikeahorse · 21/07/2014 20:55

Hi TV, I think the best advice I could give you is to just stick with it and battle through. Don't change your weights unless you really feel you need to, but warn your trainer/s that this is what your doing, And don't carb load at all, you'll just be fighting against your own body.

If its like anything I went through, It felt I was lacking on the more sustained sessions, like my body just ran out of juice after a while, then down to 60%. My short release energy was OK. (so my judo was generally ok but the longer training runs fell flat)

But it gets better, last sunday I did the london 10k on bootcamp and beat my PB. Grin

(non Ubercamp) pre run breakfast is to have a fatty boost like a glass of greek yogurt, FF cream and coconut cream mixed.

trashcanjunkie · 21/07/2014 21:06

pisses Grin I've managed to wrestle back control of both ends of my rebellious digestive tract.... This bc I aim to mainly be a normal person..... montserrat the caramel tea tasted like monkey piss for the first week! but it was better the more I had it. I preferred it to black tea, and now find myself vaguely looking forward to it. I have discovered there's an optimal temperature for quaffing, which is after about ten minutes. Any longer and it goes horrid again. I only have one or two cups daily, cos I'm watching caffeine. Peppermint is going down ok too, but I want an orangey tasting one I think.

Had weird bits and bobs today, fish, pork scratchings, rollmops, mackerel and a bit of home made red and white cabbage slaw. Treated myself to six big bottles of volvic. Tap water is tasting odd at the minute. Think it's my fucked up guts.

PoirotsMoustache · 21/07/2014 21:11

What should be the general carb intake per day?

I'm convinced I'm doing it wrong, it doesn't feel like I could possibly lose weight on it. And I had peppers today which I've just realised are quite high in carbs per 100g. I can't imagine salad without them though! Sad

TurnOverTheTv · 21/07/2014 21:29

Thanks for the advice Pisses Grin my pt will have a shit fit if he knows I'm low carbing!

BIWI · 21/07/2014 21:45

Turnoverthetv - then your PT doesn't know his stuff!

It would be a good idea for you to do some reading about low carbing so that you can argue your case. Don't carbload before the gym as you will totally ruin any efforts you've made already.

There's a really good book called "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance" written by Drs Volek and Phinny that explores how low carbing can enhance athletic performance.

Once you're keto-adapted - i.e. you have switched your body from burning carbs to burning fat - you will be able to cope with exercise without needing carbs. It will take you 2-4 weeks to be properly keto-adapted.

Now, I train twice a week with my PT and also run (although new job means I haven't done that for a while!) But I was running 5K and always ran in a fasted state. and also when I go to the gym.

BIWI · 21/07/2014 21:48

PoirotsMoustache - the whole point of Bootcamp is that you don't need to weigh/count carbs! The idea is to make it as easy as possible. Just follow the rules and you will be fine.

Plus, it's impossible to say how many grams of carbs you should eat as everyone has a different level that they can tolerate.

They are all about the 'clean eating' at my gym Grin

dollywould · 21/07/2014 22:15

Today's gone well. Especially as I did it on four hours sleep. I've been crabby but I've made it.

I'm ubercamping and today I've had:

B: Large black coffee. Two egg omelette and mushrooms in butter.
L: tuna mayo with cos lettuce and sliced cucumber
D: 2 chicken thighs, broccoli and spinach, garlic butter & chicken flakes. Much more delicious than I thought it would be.

I did have dinner late so had some cold roast chicken with mayo (about half a breast) mid-afternoon. Know it's not ubercamp but it was either that or fail totally on the first day. Absolve me, BIWI!

Not sure how much water I've had. A lot. And a peach green tea.

One day down. Six more Ubercamp days to go!

Thanks so much Sayra for the spreadsheet and everyone who is sharing their day on here. Really helped motivate me today Thanks

I thought everyone on this thread would like to read this: article:www.diabetes.co.uk/news/2014/jul/researchers-recommend-carb-restriction-as-primary-method-of-diabetes-control-91152031.html

readyforno2 · 21/07/2014 22:19

Plonky- your dress sounds beautiful..
Saturday WineI get married in November, it's coming round so quickly

Today I've had
B - mushroom omelette, fried in butter
L - tuna mayo in little gem leaves
D - 2 black farmer sausages with cauliflower and broccoli fried in butter with garlic and chilli
At least 3.5l water.
I've been at the gym tonight and pushed pretty hard, feels great to be back on it!

Marshy · 21/07/2014 22:26

Hi all,

A late check in from me. So good to see everyone on the thread.

I weighed myself this morning and have put it on the spreadsheet, I think.
My day started really well as I had already been LCing for a week as a newbie and the scales showed a loss of just over 7lbs this morning! I can hardly believe it and can't imagine i will keep up that pace but it has certainly given me a real boost.

Things went downhill a bit then as I didn't have time to cook and eat my scrambled egg before dashing off to work, so i ate a banana in the car and then had a coffee with milk when i got there.

Lunch and dinner were better - tuna mayo with salad and later chicken stir fried in olive oil with broccoli, courgette and a bit of orange pepper. I was really hungry when i got in from work so had a scrumptious avocado with a bit of salt on top. First time I've been that hungry since I started LCing and i think as a result of a less than great start this morning.

I have to leave the house at 6am tomorrow and be on a train til after 9am on my way to a conference, so tomorrow will be a challenge. Need to plan a bit i think and try to eat eggs before I go!

See you all tomorrow....

Laska42 · 21/07/2014 23:00

de lurking. im doing 5:2 really , but LC .. so not really on this bootcamp. but if its ok with you ill read and nick tips as well

questions2008 · 21/07/2014 23:21

marshy that's a great loss!

i have to hit the snooze button too many times rush off in the mornings too sometimes, so I keep a few boiled eggs in the fridge for those times when I don't have any time to cook/eat. I put them in my bag and eat them on the go.

thekitchenfairy · 21/07/2014 23:29

Evening all!

I've had a really good day... But not an uber day I. Avoided 3 kids of home made cake at work by chomping on a babybell ( and tomato!)

b: ham and cream cheese, 2 cafe creme
S: cucumber,
L: tuna mayo, celery
D: allotment haul if courgette, runner beans, pea shoots and dwarf beans fried with lemon and Parmesan with roast chicken thighs -skin on!
w: at least 3l but still feeling thirsty!
