"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

1009 replies

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

OP posts:
WidowWadman · 14/08/2009 09:43

Btw, the Mail have recently stopped moderating their comment function, so every posted comment gets published.

This means that Mumsnetters should be able to vent their anger directly on the Mail Website where it belongs and showing the Mail Readers who think that this is an official advertorial tie-in, that it indeed is the laziest form of journalism imaginable.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 14/08/2009 09:44

'certainly think about what we can do to ensure people don't get hurt.'

it would take the DM no effort at all to change username for /Mumsnetter posts' but actually make people that little less likely to pick up on a name based on their sisters nickname as a child / etc etc

But I guess for me the thing is that in 8 years this has happened what- 3 or 4 times? Now we know it will happen weekly, massive difference. I'll be actively trying not to make my posts too interesting (not of course a challenge PMSL)

your RL name and address will not be posted.

your mumsnet user name will.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 14/08/2009 09:48

'Justine - I understand that this came as a surprise and at a time when lots of people are on holiday but I hope that you will take on board that lots of MNers are really unhappy about this '

Suspects that MNHQ are hoping that we discuss this to boredom between ourselves as per Moldies and they just get away with grabbing the publicity in an environment where anyone who mentions DM-Gate gets shouted down

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 14/08/2009 09:51

Yes P

but some peoples are quite identifiable

And personally i'd rather not change mine completely becuase of 8 years of realtionships within the SN board mainly, I am unwilling to go the whole /Shhhh its a secret but I remmeber moldie gate and flouncing and I used to be fruity with 4 boys and have been here considerably longer than yow' route every time I want not just to post but to offer support on there to someone who will feel more secure knowing my background and back story

I accept I may have to, but I do feel it will reduce the quality iof what I might achieve on that board

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 14/08/2009 09:56

Well, I suppose I need to register my discontent at this point too.

I agree, having a few quotes being lifted or the idea for a story but being used in a weekly column is not on - especially in that paper.

vonsudenfedhatespauldacre · 14/08/2009 09:57

Of course the real irony in all this is that the journalist concerned has posted here for many years, and - according to Justine - is still posting.

It took me about, ooh, a minute and a half of Googling, to find out that she had a son with Aspergers and a younger daughter. Even if I hadn't had her username, I reckon it would only take me an hour or two to find her on MN, in both guises and discover, I suspect, things that she might not like me to put together and broadcast.

Now I'm not going to do that, but if she is reading this, perhaps it might make her realise the full implications of what she is doing. I suspect that she has had a lot of support from the site over the years, esp the SN board. Does she now realise that she is not only potentially denying this to herself, but to many, many other people.

Ninks · 14/08/2009 09:58

I don't think the DM comments have needed moderation. Until now

Love this one:

If this has happened, isn´t it better for the baby´s and your health not to work?

"The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline."

They don't?

PeachyAndTheDMSlackerJourno · 14/08/2009 10:02

Better for you not to work, unless of course your DH loses his job or you need any benefits in which case we HATE you

You could start a fabbo online DM game where you get to complete the DM comments, bit like the daily mail o-matic thing

PeachyAndTheDMSlackerJourno · 14/08/2009 10:05

vonsuiden I don't know who she is now, but there's a good chance if she's needed AS advice I have spoken to her on here since the name change

Aloha, at least come on and explain yourself. I wouldn't be surprised if it had been a misguided attempt to break a bit on MN-ness into the DM but heck love, I now have no idea if you're on the secure SN board I use, or what.

PhilbyBugessandMaclean · 14/08/2009 10:10

peachy;

if you think you're identifiable then you really need to think about name-changing.

preciouslillywhite · 14/08/2009 10:17

incidentally (sort of) I got identified on here-due to my family structure- a while ago and got into a whole heap of trouble with the Thought Police- but that's another story...

I understand- as an earlier post says- that you should only say on here what you're prepared to say in RL- but then that sort of takes away a lot of the point of MN ie that it is a place you can vent etc.

I'm relatively new and I love MN-don't know how I managed without it!- but this is deeply sinister. Not just that it's in the Mail which I really and truly hate- I wouldn't like it if it was in the Guardian either (more chance of people I know reading it )

PeachyAndTheDMSlackerJourno · 14/08/2009 10:18

I KNOW I am

But I won't name change; MN is no use to me without my back story.

So as I said yesterday, I am taking time to think about how I proceed, whether I continue.

If I don't, I have absolutely no support whatsoever- even the local Psych for the boys says she is seriosuly upset how alone we are- if I do I have to accept my identity may be used for a few quid profit. My profile has already gone- which is a bugger as I desperately needed some SN info on dysmorphioc features in DS3.

Whether I post after my trip away I don't know, maybe just on camping and postnatal.

GrapefruitMoon · 14/08/2009 10:19

I am cynically wondering if the journalist in question has gone over to the dark side so has no real loyalty to MN anymore. I remember her flouncing leaving but don't remember her coming back - but obv she is most likely under another name now...

All you need to do is put a poster's name in a search engine like boardreader and you can easily find out someone's posting history and even how many posts they make a day. I didn't know it was this easy to do until recently. It's much quicker and simpler than going through the MN search facility.

July 27th and August 7th were good days for bumsex.

TheDMHatesMe · 14/08/2009 10:25

Peachy - really sorry that you feel that way, but can completely understand it.

PeachyAndTheDMSlackerJourno · 14/08/2009 10:26

fis i have no reason to doubt that

yet Itstill feels odd iyswim

KingRolo · 14/08/2009 10:27

So based on that I think you either a) change your name every week or b) never post anything that could identify you to anyone - same as on any other board really.

Is itt he same as any other board? Here before we knew there was a trisk of it happening; now we know it will happen weekly

not the same IMVHO

There's very little here that will bother me too much, however ther are some things that may upset other people and I dont want that.

I name alter very often, as it happens, at kleast every fortnight. It'smore about the feeling of it all. On and in truth the feeling that every time something like this happens on MN MNHQ blag it out until we forget and as I said before anyone who emntions it gets shouted down

In 2 weeks there will a separate thread for this topic if it copntinues and any stray posts will be deleted; then it will become untouchable. Seems the old days of poster opinions amttering are long past.

PhilbyBugessandMaclean · 14/08/2009 10:32

i think some people rely far too much on mumsnet for support, it is fantastic for help and advice, but it should never replace RL.

never post anything on here you would not be happy millions of people reading, esp if you are identifiable.

PhilbyBugessandMaclean · 14/08/2009 10:33

i am now going to pass all these posts onto the russians
