"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

But surely that is one of the wonderful things about the internet - that you can instantly access help and support from people who know what they are talking about.

If you are a victim of DV, it's a much easier step to lurk/post on MN than get yourself down to your local Women's Aid.

Well tbh thethought of me having RL support is laughable.

Too shy due to bullying in school etc to make lasting friends, and the only family i have close by is my sister who i barely ever see, even though she only lives a few blocks away (and it's not because i don't try), and my mum who has Alzheimer's and lives in a nursing home.

Hmm. lots of support available then.

Goblinchild · 14/08/2009 10:58

I'm pre-internet DP. Pre-computers come to that.
What happened in the world of sn is that the provision was patchy, the more educated/bolshie parents challenged what the professionals said and did and offered. Our children got a better deal and we knew where to get help, support and finance. We also were confident enough to do things our own way even if that wasn't what the current thinking approved of.
So, 30-odd years ago, my husband ended up Oxbridge with his specialised knowledge, oddities and eccentricities and his rudimentary people-skills. Rather than in the EBD school or asylum.
The internet has enabled us to share our understanding and knowledge about the rights that you have with anyone else who's asked, supported people who have a child on the spectrum and wondered what was going on. And we've all benefited from the sharing and the empowerment.
Although I can quite understand that if it doesn't touch you, you won't give a stuff about all this.

So have MNHQ actually said anything helpful about this?

Do they plan to do something?

Is there anything they can do?

All questions for the next thread perhaps?

I suppose the problem is that with something as fanstastic as the internet and sites like MN for getting advice and support there is bound to be a downside and that's loss of privacy. I just can't see a way of possibly having both support and privacy.

But you can increase your chances by not posting pictures of yourself and your DCs or giving out info about where you live. I don't see how that makes any difference to the support you'd get.

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 14/08/2009 11:06

Hmm, you mean I am going to have to do more than just skim read Lenin? [sigh]

The DM has much to answer for

foxinsocks · 14/08/2009 11:06

but giving out info about where you live can be as simple as recommending someone visit a local tourist attaction
