"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

1009 replies

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

yes everyone must take on an IhatetheDailyMail or an IBetThisGetsQuotedintheDM nickname or some such thing.

margotfonteyn · 13/08/2009 11:39

Leningrad. V true.

It's going to put me off posting though. I don't want anything I say on here being repeated in the Daily Mail. (my 'name' is far more suitable than yours though...).

Nancy66 · 13/08/2009 11:40

The Femail supplement (on a Thursday) relaunched last week with new features, columns etc - and, my understanding, is that it is a regular thing.

I read elsewhere that the MN team knew nothing about it which surprised me.

It is good publicity for MN and will bring more people over to the site - like it or not the Mail has huge clout and influence which is why it's so loved by PRs. A mention of your product in the Femail pages will push sales through the roof.

But I think purely out of courtesy and professionalism the journalist should have consulted MN.

I think you need to get in there and make a few demands - like the inclusion of your logo and a web link. although I haven't seen the print edition, only online. (print sometimes varies to online edition)

flashharriet · 13/08/2009 11:46

Well I think MNHQ should think very carefully about this - I post for advice on MN and am happy to give advice and relate experiences which may help another poster. I do this because it's highly unlikely that anyone who would recognise me, even with a nickname, would be reading MN. However, if threads are going to be regularly published in national newspapers, there's a good chance that a friend or relative could be reading them and could well recognise a unique set of circumstances that someone has posted about.

It really doesn't sit well with me and I'm incredibly disappointed at the ex-MNetter who has chosen to go down this route for the DM .

GirlsAreLoud · 13/08/2009 11:54

Sorry if I'm being thick but who is the ex mnetter you're talking about?

this is going to make me very circumspect about opinions and support I give as I dont wish to change my name but it identifies me.

Fabbo

I'm no,for example, going to say a lot of our experience with ds1's SENCO as I would lay koney on her thinking the DM is a format of The Bible, and with ds4 going there (if I cant p[ersaude dh otherwise) I dont wnat him affected (whereas I know she doesnt read MN as she thinks forums are crap)

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 12:00

If she does, then as a regular or ex-regular, I'm sure she won't name anybody with bizarre and identifiable circumstances- she seemed like a good egg to me.

PeachyLaPeche · 13/08/2009 12:02

If it is her I feel fairly safe

But we don't know do we? It would be better if she said

Tinker · 13/08/2009 12:02

Completely agreee with flashharriet. Am very surprised at that particular journalist resorting to this.

navyeyelasH · 13/08/2009 12:04

is there a way to not have our nicknames used do you think?

PeachyLaPeche · 13/08/2009 12:06

That wopuld help a lot

I have Peachy embroidered on my raincoat atm after a rugby tour- hardly anon

JustineMumsnet · 13/08/2009 12:07

Hello hello,
We contacted the writer a day or two ago and she confirmed that this is going to be a regular item. Despite a few misgivings about the DM, we know that this particular Mumsnetter will do a good job - as been said she's been around for ages and definitely gets what's the site's all about - so we're not agin it. As folk have said it's a chance to spread the Mumsnet word to those who need it most . We'll see if we can persuade the Mail to include a link to the site in return for their content! Thanks for the input.

AtheneNoctua · 13/08/2009 12:09

I don't understand why MNHQ needs to think carefully about this. This will rais the whole GF thing again. But, it's my understanding (which is perhaps not a credible one) that things posted in this chat site are in the public domain and the responsibility of the poster. MN does not own what I type, and there should bear no responsibility for what someone else chooses to reprint.

LadyMuck · 13/08/2009 12:09

MNHQ know how to contact the journalist involved. I'm sure that someone from MNHQ will be able to give an update (or have they really left morningpaper in charge?!)

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 12:10

Ah well, I'm safe then

"a few misgivings about the DM" . Not happy with this at all. mn being almost officially associated with the DM does not sit well with me.

cthea · 13/08/2009 12:11

This is awful. What next, The Sun?

vonsudenfed · 13/08/2009 12:12

What worries me is that we're going to be flooded with new peeps who actually like what the daily mail writes (and believes it?) Then where will there be left for me to go?

Mamazon · 13/08/2009 12:13

did we have to agree to a disclaimer saying that our words can be re used in other publications when we joined?

maybe that would be an idea.

Im surprised that they are allowed to just lift people's posts without asking.
I've been asked by a couple of journalists if they can use my stories for articles. Its not hard to send a CAT to anyone that you want to quote, even if its just to let them know they have been. its just decency IMHO
