here

I even object to the way it is being reported ' over sensitive'

I think not - i think the 'outburst' quite justified !

I mean Obama got away with calling Sarah Palin a 'pig'. I can't stand Palin, but I thought that was totally unacceptable. Can you imagine the outrage if Hilary had called Palin a pig?

Itsjustafleshwound · 12/08/2009 16:32

I once had to go to the Cyprus embassy to get a visa - they wouldn't consider my application because my husband hadn't come with me!

Greek embassy was just as bad ...

Apparently (Times) the interpreter was in the clear - it was the french student who made the blapse...

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 16:33

Excuse me (hijak alert), MRsSF, could you get your little typing finger over here please.

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 16:38

I take the points about how women are sometimes judged by a different standard than men, and agree wholheartedly that that is wrong. However I think that in this case Hilary is being judged because she snapped. She was cough off guard and reacted emotionally. Obama doesn't do this (much), and that is why it iso overlooked on the rare occassion he has an outburst.

Hilary is hated by her enemies more than she is loved by her supporters. She is one controversial politician. And that is the basis for the judgement. Not the fact that she is a woman.

I am one of the least sexist people around and I hate Hilary Clinton and I mean hate (not on a personal level but a political one)and it isn't because I judge men and women by different standards. Hilary is a very smart person, but she is not the politician that Bill was and this clip is but one example of that fact.

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2009 17:28

the clip is fine. she barely snapped at all, she was pretty aghast, that's all. i think you're projecting, athene.

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 17:44

Projecting what? Perhaps you mean when I said she was smart.

And what was it that led you to conclude that she "was pretty aghast" if she "barely snapped at all"?

ilovemydogandmrobama · 12/08/2009 17:51

Obama didn't call Sarah Palin a pig.

He '... told voters that they shouldn't believe John McCain and Palin's talk about reforming Washington. "You can put lipstick on a pig," Obama said. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink," Obama added. "We've had enough of the same old thing."

(from Boston Globe, I think)

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 17:55

However, he did say it on the back of her hockey mom / lipstick joke. So it does logically follw that there was at least an implication there that he was calling Sarah a pig.

And, another thing, can one really put lipstick on a pig. I mean the logistics of that task do seem a tad challenging.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 12/08/2009 17:58

Oh, didn't know she made a hockey mom/lipstick joke. Is there more to this story?

at Athene. Do pigs even have lips?

Itsjustafleshwound · 12/08/2009 18:02

Have you two never watched 'Peppa Pig' ???

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 18:13

At the Republican convention she said the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull was lipstick. And a week later Barack talked about lipstick on a pig. Definitely not a coincidence. But oh well, I dare say she has been called worse (on Mumsnet).

I thought peppa's lips were naturally bright red?

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2009 19:07

athene, there is not contradiction there. someone can be shocked without snapping.

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 19:18

But, how could you know how she felt if you did not draw that conclusion from her snapping? Unless of course you know Hilary personally and she told you how she felt after the event. But, I'm guess that isn't the case.

So, obviously, she did snap or you couldn't have drawn the conclusion that she was "aghast". Unless she did something else that led you to that conclusion. Perhaps it was the pause and the stumbling for words, which were equally damaging to her reaction.

like dittany said, she was listening, open-mouthed, to the translation, presumably having understood her own husband's name. she was emphatic and composed, i thought. you're reading far too much into this on the grounds that you 'hate' her, imo.

and to be fair she had every reason to be shocked, because it wasn't clinton the translator should have said, it was obama. there was time for him to have realised his mistake and correct himself.

Hard to believe she's getting any criticism. I thought she was remarkably restrained and even amusing. Love her or loathe her, she's an inspiration.

pofacedandproud · 12/08/2009 20:07

Oh God Dittany. And that's not newsworthy, is it. What is wrong with these fucking people. Journalists I mean.

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2009 20:17

yeah, it's all the fault of the journalists.

sorry. Didn't mean to tar all journalists with the same brush. But surely there is a point here, that the Congo details are not getting reported in the same way.

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2009 20:51

like dittany says, the congo details have probably received more coverage because of this. sad but true, people don't receive news from the papers any more, that's what the interenet's for. papers are just rantrags. but then we've all got mortgages to pay...
