here

I even object to the way it is being reported ' over sensitive'

I think not - i think the 'outburst' quite justified !

I think if you need to compare her to John Prescott, then that says it all really.

But, Dittany, I know lots of people who thought John Prescott was an idiot before the punching episode. I think he has been judged for his action, and so should Hilary be.

I would have the same critism for a man who behaved as Hilary did.

Is that you plural, or are you interested in Athene's response?

Oh, don't be shy Obama. That's a very "girly" trait and it doesn't become you.

AtheneNoctua · 13/08/2009 14:37

Well, I must admit I don't know much about him. I know he is connected to the Chicago machine as is much of Obamas cabinet and that tends to spell one thing: corruption. But, I don't know enough about him to really offer an opinion.

I love Hillary Clinton as I do Bill Clinton.

I believe Hillary was justified in her response but how she did it was not professional or becoming of her status. The petulance of her response has unfortunately diminished the significance of what she was actually saying.

Hillary has been the media spotlight long enough to know that journalists tend towards misogyny when it comes to female politicians, academics, business gurus or any female with a modicum of intelligence. She should have shown more restraint and not answered with a petulant tone.

HerBeatitude · 13/08/2009 17:23

I don't think the prescott comparison is right at all. He physically attacked someone. She made a sharp retort. Is a woman not simpering but simply telling it like it is, when she thinks she's been insulted really equivalent to a man punching someone when he thinks he has? I don't think so.

Am loving the image of Hilary getting down from the podium and punching him, or perhaps launching herself Cantona-style. I wonder if that will ever happen? (Not with Hilary, obv, but perhaps a female politician one day, in our lifetime... )

winnie09 · 13/08/2009 19:46

Sorry haven't read all of the thread but she was right to say what she did. Good grief I can't believe (or can I?) the abuse she ahs got in the media for this. The question was unbelievably inappropriate and rude.

Donkeyswife · 13/08/2009 20:07

Hillary was and is TOTALLY justified in her outburst. Take it in context, she'd been dealing with a country where women are treated appallingly. It was a natural reaction, yes she's Secretary of State, but I think she sent a very positive and clear message out to a lot of menfolk in the Congo.

tinseltot · 13/08/2009 20:46

Can totally understand Hilary's response and yes in the circumstances it was justified, BUT, she would have been better advised to have delivered her retort in a more measured fashion (i.e made it clear why the question was unacceptable but done so in a calmer way).

I too am gobsmacked that anyone can compare a politician who thumped people with one who tartly told someone that she was the stateswoman, not her retiree husband.

Thatcher used to make similarly tart replies, actually. I liked her for that - her handbagging as it was called, iirc - just not for gems such as, "there is no such thing as society. There are families and there are individuals."

monkeytrousers · 13/08/2009 21:26

Someone in her postion should at first suspect a problem with the interpretation - which it was.

AitchTwoOh · 13/08/2009 21:28

from the clip i think she did look for some help with the matter and was signalled to continue.

HerBeatitude · 14/08/2009 10:03

Interesting point about how Mrs Thatcher had a similar way of responding to interviewers who irritated her.
