I even object to the way it is being reported ' over sensitive'

I think not - i think the 'outburst' quite justified !

No, women are seen as hysterical and out of control, whereas the same behaviour in a man is often interpreted as 'dynamic'.

Chica31 · 12/08/2009 12:34

I was talking to my mum about Hillary Clinton today and she sent me this. Hope you all like it.

While the C-5 was turning over its engines, a female crewman gave the G.I.s on board the usual
information regarding seat belts, emergency exits, etc.

Finally, she said, 'Now sit back and enjoy your trip while your captain, Judith Campbell, and crew
take you safely to Afghanistan '

An old MSgt. sitting in the eighth row thought to himself,
'Did I hear her right? Is the captain a woman? '

When the attendant came by he said 'Did I understand you right? Is the captain a woman?'

'Yes,'! said the attendant, 'In fact, this entire crew is female.'

'My God,' he said, 'I wish I had two double scotch and sodas. I don't know what to think
with only women up there in the cockpit.'

'That's another thing, Sergeant,' said the crew member,
'We No Longer Call It The Cockpit'

'It's The Box Office.'

Quote of the day:

'Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit.'

Loving that quote of the day Chica

bleh · 12/08/2009 13:03

I get snippy if people assign the glory elsewhere, or think that someone else does my job, no wonder she was annoyed (and my response may have involved some physical swearing).

So people have said she used Clinton to gain group politically, but then didn't her use her too, to get into the White House, and while in there? Same for Obama: a massive part of his appeal is Michelle, TBH.

KingRolo · 12/08/2009 13:08

I bet nobody would ask Obama what Michelle thought of anything, unless it was fashion related.

What annoys me isn't so much what actually happened. It's the media coverage and the casual misogyny it has exposed.

Women, know your place.

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2009 13:23

i didn't think she was particularly snippy about it, just firm and a bit aghast. i think it's superb, am really tickled by it.

you should ask MP about this issue, when she was being interviewed about GF.

honeydew · 12/08/2009 13:24

A hissy fit? hardly. She was absolutely right to to admonish the person who tried to defer to her husband. How bloody rude-!

It's about time these old patriarchal attitudes towards women in politics were quashed.

Women cannot win- they are vilified and attached on all levels. I;m surprised there are any women in politics both here and in the US.

We still have a long way to go with women's equality and why should she she be subject to that kind of comment?

It's about time women had more voice. Good for her! Is there anyone worse than the miserable man Peter M?

Itsjustafleshwound · 12/08/2009 13:26

But this is the prevailing attitude to women in Africa !!

If you see some of the abuse levelled at female politicians in Africa ...

KingRolo · 12/08/2009 13:29

And what was she doing in Africa? That has hardly been reported.

Fairynufff · 12/08/2009 13:33

I agree with the general consensus - defintately NOT a 'hissy fit' - it was justified ire and my respect for her went up 1000%. Go girl!

hatwoman · 12/08/2009 13:34

I saw her response - but haven't read the coverage. One of my main reactions is complete sympathy for the questioner/interpreter (not sure which one messed up). I could easily have made that slip of the tongue and would be mortified.

but Hilary had a prima facie case for reacting how she did. diplomacy and laughing it off are all very well when you're a white male top dog. but a bit of anger is wholly justified when something about your identity means it's widely thought to be ok to kick you about a bit.

pofacedandproud · 12/08/2009 13:46

she should have been simpering and flirty. That is the only acceptable response for a woman. Angry women, or even straight talking women are always 'mad bitches'

cherryblossoms · 12/08/2009 14:17

KingRolo - Yes! Why, why, why is THIS what's being reported about the trip to Africa? (Good post about this too, Dittany.)

I just find it intensely frustrating - she's pretty high-profile, she's done a big tour, the partial aim of which is to raise Africa in the public/media attention and ... THIS is what gets reported.

It's mind-warpingly annoying.

Stigaloid · 12/08/2009 14:30

Chica - love the quote!

sayanything · 12/08/2009 15:06

I thought "Good for her", especially given the setting. I'd have been a lot more scathing.

I just watched the clip on Fox News and really expected them to spew vile misogynist nastiness against Clinton but, to my surprise, the female anchor was really quite supportive of Hillary's response (not so much the male anchor, who just smirked smugly).

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 15:31

I don't think the press coverage is sexist or misogynist at all. The question itself is very sexist. I thin the interpreter/questioner was wrong to allow it. In the clip you can see Hilary turn to her as if to say "Am I supposed to answer that insult?" and the questioner signal for her to answer it. At that point, Hilary stumbles. She is taken aback, and she she snaps back. If Hilary had lept her cool she could have made the the guy who asked the question look like a real arse. But, she lost and so she looks like the arse. Someone with her experience as first lady and senator not to mention lawyer really ought to know how to perform in the public eye. She appeared totally surprised. But, she shouldn't have been.

I am of course not defending the question. It was sexist. It shouldn't have been asked. And once it was asked, it shouldn't have been allowed. But, Hilary did a poor job of responding to it.

Ria79 · 12/08/2009 15:33

Hi guys i haven't read all the threads so someone has surely said it by now but didn't they misenterprete what she was asked - they said Bill Clinton rather than Obama?
Thats what i heard anyway!!!

bleh · 12/08/2009 16:03

Yes, that's what happened. They said Mr Clinton, rather than Mr Obama.

Can we have Hillary on for a webchat, please?

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/08/2009 16:05

I work for the same organisation as my husband, and he was called in once, to see someone relatively senior, who told him to "do something about his aggressive wife." Wisely, he didn't mention this to me until the senior man had left...

I doubt I'd have been called in to be told to sort out some aspect of my husband's work or personality.

IWishIWasAFrog · 12/08/2009 16:27

Not generally a Hilary fan - but good for her. From living there, I know the status of women in Africa are(in most societies) usually low, good for her for standing up for herself.

AtheneNoctua · 12/08/2009 16:28

Is that really what happened? I can't hear the orignal question on my clip -- only the translated question.

Hi MrsF. That man was just scared of you. Didn't have the tits to talk to you himself.

This is what I wish Hilary had said:

"I don't know how Bill feels about the situation. He has been too busy baking cookies to worry his pretty little head about such matters."

pofacedandproud · 12/08/2009 16:29

But why should politicians be slick and artificial all the time Athene? It was an honest response. Men speak with passion, women speak with vitriol. It is always, always the same.
