here

I even object to the way it is being reported ' over sensitive'

I think not - i think the 'outburst' quite justified !

She was absolutely justified - what does it say about the status of women in society if one of the most powerful / influential women in the world is asked her husband's opinion rather than her own!

pofacedandproud · 13/08/2009 11:03

'Would she have done than standing next to Carla Bruni and Sarko?' Well last time I checked Carla Bruni and Sarko weren't in the Congo getting their Dior clothes dirty and trying to help sort out a terrible humanitarian tragedy. Can no one allow her to be human? She didn't rant or spit oestrogen laced fire or anything. She was direct, and showed she didn't think it was on. What is wrong with that?

AitchTwoOh · 13/08/2009 11:28

"I really don't think she reacted like a senior stateswoman."

yes, i think you're absolutely right. she reacted like a senior statesman would have to an idiotic and insulting question. thank GOD.

AtheneNoctua · 13/08/2009 11:53

She didn't act like a Senior Statesman or a Senior Stateswoman. Gender has nothing to with it.

And I don't think that an emotional outburst is generally regarded as a stereotypically male trait.

AtheneNoctua · 13/08/2009 11:53

Where is Xenia? Does she still type on here?

Tamilla01 · 13/08/2009 11:54

I agree I think that her retort was a good one

mitfordsisters · 13/08/2009 12:05

It was Jessica Mitford who was the communist. Pamela was an Aga loving lesbian and Deborah enjoyed keeping chickens.

Again, as I said before, it was an interpretation error. The mature, statesmanlike thing to do would have been to mentally count to 10 before reacting, giving others in the room time to rectify the question. She went at the questioner like a bulldog, which hardly bodes well for her decision-making abilities under fire and makes me glad she did not end up as President.

duchesse · 13/08/2009 12:16

Actually, she reacted like someone with a massive chip on her shoulder, which really surprises me given that she has had a long and successful career in law.

GivePeasAChance · 13/08/2009 12:26

Personally I think she did right to speak up, however she came across as a little bit emotional which really does not help the negative stereotype that persists about women being too emotional to handle tough jobs. And really she did look a bit PMT-esque

HerBeatitude · 13/08/2009 12:32

Oh was it Unity that was the bonkers one, then, was she the one who got a bullet in her head but didn't die? I didn't even know there was a Pamela and only discovered Deborah a few years ago. How many were there, new ones keep popping up every time I turn round.

She's in her early 60's She looks fab. I wonder what cosmetics she uses??

mayorquimby · 13/08/2009 12:57

see that's a fair point with regards prescott and in my mind a valid enough comparrison.
but i'd give that exactly the same evaluation as i would clintons response. completely justified and right, but not what you want to see from a senior statesman or stateswoman.

mitfordsisters · 13/08/2009 12:58

GivePeas - I agree that Hillary does not have the most relaxed and natural speaking style, but does that mean she should not be in a tough job? No one said that about John Prescott when he was Deputy to Prime Minister and he was constantly in a huff, and even punched someone... It's double standards on the part of the journalists, and that's why I would defend her. Male politicians are allowed more leeway than female ones.

HerB - There was Nancy, Diana, Tom (died in WW2), Unity, Jessica, Pamela and Deborah.

mayorquimby · 13/08/2009 12:59

also i'm gobsmacked as are you wrt the pmt comments as any time i've heard it mentioned it's been women saying it. these same women would go ape shit if a man made the suggestion but apparently it's fine for another woman to say it.

mitfordsisters · 13/08/2009 13:00

Crossposts dittany, didn't see you'd already mentioned John Prescott.

GivePeasAChance · 13/08/2009 13:07

Erm.............did anyone see the press that John Prescott used to get?? He was crucified EVERY day.

I sometimes think I live in a parallel universe.

GivePeasAChance · 13/08/2009 13:17

Oh and I didn't say that she should not be in a tough job like that......it's just if she behaves like an emotional women then people will jump on that because it complies to the stereotype of women being too emotional for the job.

Just to clarify

mitfordsisters · 13/08/2009 13:26

Oh yes, they used to call him Two Jags didn't they? His gaffes were legendary though GivePeas - extra-marital affair with secretary, two Jaguars on expenses, punching people etc. I guess we are not comparing like with like here - Hillary has only made the glaring and oh so unforgivable error of responding in a strident fashion.

GivePeasAChance · 13/08/2009 13:29

Exactly miford - she should know better than to appear emotional in public - she is female after all

mitfordsisters · 13/08/2009 13:34

I don't think she was behaving in an emotional way.

mitfordsisters · 13/08/2009 13:47

As I said before, she does not have a natural or particularly likable speaking style - but I never said she was emotional - I said 'strident'.
