I just recieved an email containing all of the BNP members list, complete with phone numbers and address.

The story has been reported in the press online today:
here

Not sure what to do with it - teacher and a policewoman are on the list but kids are too.

OP posts:
BONKERZ · 18/11/2008 22:30

omg my bil is on the list!
excuse my ignorance, is this bad?

Megglevache · 18/11/2008 22:30
Shock
onager · 18/11/2008 22:30

As SGB says it's a legal political party. If you believe in democracy you should be just as angry that's been leaked as any other private information.

Also of course being BNP doesn't mean you attack people - that's the lunatic fringe.

PortAndLemon · 18/11/2008 22:30

Yes.

PortAndLemon · 18/11/2008 22:31

(that was to BONKERZ)

PortAndLemon · 18/11/2008 22:34

Wouldn't be desperately angry about leak if membership of another political party were leaked (and DH is a member of another political party, so that would affect us). Can't summon up energy to be desperately about leak because it's the BNP. That's me treating them the same as any other legal political party.

PortAndLemon · 18/11/2008 22:34

my treating them, not me treating them.

Apologies to fellow pedants.

weebleswobble · 18/11/2008 22:35

Blimey - there's a social worker on there.

LittleBella · 18/11/2008 22:35

Well I think it just shows that you should never give anyone any details about you ever.

I believe in democracy but am pretty sure the BNP don't. They believe in crap like 'all foreigners should be sent home'.

Megglevache · 18/11/2008 22:39

Social workers, teachers, policemen.

Why would you surprised by that?

My amusement is directed at the idiots(or lunatic fringe as described on here) on the forums who have opened used disgusting racist and offensive language in their earlier posts.

I'm not sorry about it either.

jimmyjammys · 18/11/2008 22:41

Those BNP members are pathetic - why be members if you are ashamed or scared of being outed!

Well, I think the point is, what is going to be done with this information. If it's used to remove people from jobs that they shouldn't be in (police aren't allowed to be BNP members, for instance) then that's one thing, but if it's used to intimidate people on the list, then that's not defensible in my book.

The fact that the BNP is anti-democratic is neither here nor there, really. We are supposed to live in a democratic society in which people are entitled to espouse political views without being assaulted for them.

I loathe them too but I feel very uncomfortable about this.

policywonk · 18/11/2008 22:52

Oh well yes, quite.

I sometimes wonder whether the media contributes to the BNP's power by attributing greater significance to it than it actually has, though. I mean, its share of the national vote is pretty paltry. Turning it into this big scary fascist monster actually makes it more attractive to the hard-of-thinking types.

Cashncarry · 18/11/2008 22:55

Just logging on to add to the minority view on this thread that I think it's at the very least bad taste that this list is being circulated and has people's personal details on it. I'm actually quite that people are even speculating about the possibility of using the information to harass people on the list.

And, if it makes any difference, this is coming from someone whose family decided to emigrate when I was younger because of the actions of the BNP/NF in London in the early eighties.

Two wrongs don't make a right people. The best way to eradicate the views of the BNP et al is to educate them not to utilise the same despicable methods.

BONKERZ · 18/11/2008 22:57

well my brother in law reckons he could get into alot of trouble for this and is trying to get his phone numbers changed now. he is worried how poeple will use his information.
i dont really understand the BNP but have a little idea thank to DH, Apprently its the only thing him and his brother argue over but even DH was shocked his brother had gone as far as to join the BNP!

Spidermama · 18/11/2008 22:58

Is there a way of searching the list which isn't to do with the alphabetical order of the names? For example, if I wanted to see if there were any members from, say, Bognor how could I do it?

weebleswobble · 18/11/2008 23:01

You can save the document to Word then search for 'Bognor'.

cali · 18/11/2008 23:02

if anyone is using an apple, press apple then F, then enter the word(s) you want to search.

solidgoldbrass · 18/11/2008 23:02

I find it worrying that so many people appear to use BNP membership as some kind of qualification for 'not a person, fair game for harassment'. I was once on a training course for a job which involved dealing with the public and we discussed the issue of refusing service to people under certain circumstances, at which point the trainer said 'Oh well, if they are BNP members or something you could walk out'.
Do I have to make a big deal about not being a member of the BNP or remotely in sympathy with them before I can say that I find this use of 'BNP member' as a byword for 'oh you can mistreat them' a bit worrying?
Surely if a person has political views that you disagree with (and no criminal convictions for violence and no suggestion that the person has ever actually committed violent or destructive acts in the name of his/her views) then the best response is to engage with and debate with the person, point out why you disagree with him/her, rather than engage in petty vigilantism? Just because 'they' would probably do it, doesn't justify you doing it.
