I think what Vera was talking about was from THIS article in The Times.

wannaBe · 17/03/2008 18:00

that artacle is so sad and yet so true.

Some children are obviously worth more than others .

Veraduckworthshandbag · 17/03/2008 19:29

Thank you milliways, the article I was talking about was in the mail, but more or less said the same thing, this little girl was overlooked. And admit it or not people judge.

The McCanns = nice hard working married couple, cute little children on a posh family holiday have their child taken and the public out poring of time, money and publicity was vast, the media reported on every little thing and yes there was mud thrown but little of it stuck.

This little girls family live on a run down council estate, her mother lives with a man 10 years younger has 7 children by 5 men and the whole family set up is not your 2.5 children hard working professional couple like the McCanns, it is however you look at it messy.
And if we want to admit it or not the papers showed little interest after the first few days, David Beckham did not pop up on T.V with Shannons face on a T shirt, a fund to help Shannons family was not started, the public were not putting is hand in its pockets for this little girl, She was judged her familys life style was judged mud has been thrown and it has stuck.

This little girl had as much right to be found, to be looked for to be as important as Maddie McCann, but in todays world where so much is based on what you look like where you come from and what you have Shannon became a 2nd class person.

EVERY child has the right to be protected , to be loved, to be kept safe and to be valued, I don't suppose Shannons mother loves her daughter any less then Mrs McCann loves hers so why when two children were missing did one matter more then the other?

It is a sad world, and sadly there are more Shannons then there are Maddies in it, and every single one should count.

Well, to be fair, I don't think any of those things happened within 3 weeks of Maddie going missing, did they? The t-shirts and fundraising only happened some considerable time later. Perhaps it would have happened for Shannon too, in time.

Just did a quick google search Beckham did his appeal on 11 May and Maddie disappeared on 3 May and the fund was launched on 16 May.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6671023.stm

Real Madrid soccer star and former England captain David Beckham made an impassioned television appeal on Friday for information relating to missing British toddler Madeleine McCann.

Three-year old Madeleine went missing from the Praia da Luz resort in the southern Portuguese region of the Algarve eight days ago. Investigators believe she was kidnapped.

"Last Thursday evening a little girl called Maddy was taken from the family hotel room in the Algarve in southern Portugal. As I'm sure you understand, we need to do everything possible to help the police with their enquiries in finding her," Beckham said.

Madeleine disappeared from the McCann's holiday apartment while her parents were at dinner.

No arrests have yet been made relating to the disappearance of Madeleine, whose fourth birthday is on Saturday.

It is obvious why this case is so different to the case of Madeleine McCann. It is two entirely different scenarios.

One abroad, one close to home
One 3yo, one 9yo
One where abduction seems the only likely probability; the other where it is thought she may have run away

Lots more

Freckle · 17/03/2008 20:30

Gosh, just shows how time distorts our recollections.

Oliveoil · 17/03/2008 20:32

well if my daughter had been found after being missing for 24 days I would lie down on the floor of the police station and refuse to move until I saw her and took her home with me

very odd, sad case

Moomin · 17/03/2008 20:32

But you've also got to take into consideration - whatever your own views on both cases - that media involvement in terms of alerting the whole of Europe was imperative with Madeleine McCann and the general assumption was that she had been abducted by a stranger (yes, claims and accusations levelled towards the family came later...) but the case was reported as an abduction in a foreign country and it was a very unusual child abduction case.

With the Shannon Matthews case, many representatives of the media and the police were highly suspicious of the immediate and extended family and the very close geographical area to Shannon's home, so the publicity was hardly going to be the same, nor was it necessary to be so.
