MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 22:42

sorry you don't believe me paula- i cannot help seeing this from my perspective- not everyone has grown up in a cosy family

madamez · 14/03/2008 22:43

Most of the facts will probably come out if and when someone is brought to trial for the kidnapping/accessory to kidnapping/perverting the course of justice or whatever. And if, as seems just a little bit likely, abusive behaviour by some or other male member of the family was at the bottom of this story, it will be the girl's mother who gets the most vilification in the press. For having had sex more than once and looking a bit rough, probably. So no change there, really.

well it's certain interesting to see the different perspectives from the media...

here

it says,
"Neighbours said Shannon looked "quite calm" as she was taken from the house and officers confirmed that she was OK."

and yet

here

it says
""She looked scared for her life," said eyewitness Mandy Dixon.".

so which was it then? .

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 14/03/2008 23:04

she has met with her mother this afternoon albeit for a short reconciliation

mum23asd i do believe you but think ;opinion' and conjecture are two different things

i grew up in a far far from cosy family but as a mother and a woman i now think women are often vilified in these circumstances

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 23:14

again...for not knowing what conjecture means...and wishing i had looked it up in the dictionary before posting.!

yes you are right about the women being vilified- but did you watch the 'true story' "no child of mine" years ago- where a girl was groomed and pimped by her own mum & dad?

locally a girl went missing a few years back- the mum and dad pleading on tv news for her safe return....crying etc...eventually body found...eventually dad confessed he killed her.

so i cannot help being so negative about all this- life is SHIT

i just hope when shannon met with her mum "this afternoon albeit for a short reconciliation" that shannons body language did not give police more reason to keep her in protective care. I want to believe she was happy to see her mum. I am scared she cowered and did not appear relaxed.

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 23:19

on the telegraph artacle I linked to above it states that the first Shannon's mum/stepdad heard about Shannon being found was that the stepdad received a text. a text? wtf? even if it was from a neighbour of the flat where she'd been found wouldn't they ring in person? I find that really odd.

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 23:21

...and accoring to the tv news the bloke that had her is a relative of the stepdad...

nancy75 · 14/03/2008 23:23

i think these articles should just all be taken with a large pinch of salt at the moment. this is obviously a huge story for the papers, but they probably dont know much more than we do, they cant fill pages of their paper just with "child found" so they have to add details that usually turn out to be 4th hand gossip.

Mumcentreplus · 14/03/2008 23:26

I'm truly happy for Shannon and her family

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 23:28

mum23asd it's commonly k nown though that a child is more likely to be killed abused by someone they know than by a stranger, so when the family are arrested in a case like this it rarely comes as a surprise.

also, families are often encouraged to appeal, because it gives psychologists chance to assess whether they might be hiding something.

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 23:33

did any of you here the interview the mum gave radio 4 i think on wednesday? i did- and it was from that point i was suspicious. the mum may be being abused herself- she seemed very reluctant to talk about the stepdad when probed.

SparklyGothKat · 14/03/2008 23:34

I am just glad she has been found

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 23:34

i meant 'did you HEAR the interview on radio 4"

bossybritches · 14/03/2008 23:41

Nancy75- I think you have hit the nail on the head. It's a great news story but because of the sensitive & complex nature of the case the details aren't going to emerge just yet if at all.

Wannabe - how many times have we seen these appeals/photo calls set up or interviews with a step-father/mums boyfriend/Dad/neighbour appearing to be distraught & then within days /weeks he is a suspect & often found guilty?

Does NOT for one minute pre-suppose this is the case here but the psyches wil be taking a long look at the family set up hopefully.

Such a shame Shannon had to go into care though, just after she had come out of this ordeal, although I can quite see why the police/SS have done it. However if they think Shannon is at risk what about the other children?

WendyWeber · 14/03/2008 23:42

I don't believe they do think she is at risk - I think they just want to debrief her carefully without any outside interference.

WendyWeber · 14/03/2008 23:43

(ie without anybody putting ideas in her head or words in her mouth)

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 23:44

well I guess that even if the other children have been taken into care also the police wouldn't want that publishing as that will just fuel the speculation even more.

so entirely possible the other children are under a similar order but not public knowledge?

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 23:45

ww, for three days? because that's how long the order is for atm with a view to extending if necessary.

and if the family were not involved there wouldn't be concerns of words being put in her mouth, surely?

bossybritches · 14/03/2008 23:45

yes good points Wendy AND WannaBe!

( here's us speculating as badly as the newspapers!!)

WendyWeber · 14/03/2008 23:51

The police will need to coax out of her, without leading her in any way, what happened, when, and how - if she went home she would be overwhelmed with all sorts of talk and emotions and suggestions that would prevent them from being able to do that.

I'm not implying that her family are "involved" - just that they would distract her.

harpsichordcarrier · 14/03/2008 23:52

mum23 apparently the step dad was in the room with her during that interview (yes i heard it - I thought it was shocking and tabloidy and incredibly intrusive)

WendyWeber · 14/03/2008 23:57

It (or some of it) was played on Feedback today, followed by a Toady spokesperson justifying how it was done (but my tiny brain has completely forgotten what was said).

I did wonder why, if the stepdad was right there, he didn't speak (or did he and they just didn't replay any of that?)

madamez · 15/03/2008 00:02

Mum23ASD: 'No Child of Mine' was a work of fiction based on fact and some of it was pretty dubious.
