Some good news at last!!

Wannabe, you can't be serious. Even if she came to him of her own free will and he was hiding her out of some misguided sense that he was helping her, he would not be charged simply with 'perverting the course of justice'. He would still, and quite rightly, be charged with kidnapping.

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 21:54

no I sincerely doubt that. if Shannon went to him she will have done so of her own free will and that is not kidnapping.

And perverting the course of justice also carries a prison sentence.

RosaIsRed · 14/03/2008 21:59

Well it is pointless to speculate about what this man could be charged with, but perverting the course of justice is not the most likely or appropriate option.

LittleBella · 14/03/2008 22:00

Keeping her against her parent's will is kidnapping though.

Of course it is.

Otherwise any of our children could visit any of our neighbours and they could keep them against our will. If that's not kidnapping, I'm a banana.

Heated · 14/03/2008 22:00

It's an odd story. If the press reports from family are to be believed, Shannon was unhappy (re step father) and didn't want to go home, asked to stay with grandparents but they insisted a tearful Shannon return. Then she is found at a relative's house. Earlier this week Mrs Matthews said she believed someone she knew had snatched her daughter to hurt her.

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 22:02

according to bbc news Shannon has been taken into care.

3NAB · 14/03/2008 22:03

that doesn't sit right with me - re the mother

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 22:04

and lb that really depends. if a child went to visit a neighbour because they were afraid to go home and the neighbour hid them they would not be charged with kidnapping because it would be miticating circumstances. obviously wasting police time etc has to come into it, of course it does, but given Shannon has now apparently been taken into care there are obviously family issues.

JingleyJen · 14/03/2008 22:06

It is clear that the situation is complicated.. it is a long time for no one to have explored that area of the family (albeit extended family)

MINNIE1 · 14/03/2008 22:07

The best news i have heard all day... Hope it will be a good outcome..

LittleBella · 14/03/2008 22:09

She wasn't found at a relative's house. He's reported as being the uncle of her current step-father. That's not a relative.

It is so touching to see those celebrations. Odd, because let's face it the child must have been through a terrible ordeal and she's beein put into care, which is hardly a cause for celebration and bonfires, but the relief that she is alive is so moving.

LittleBella · 14/03/2008 22:13

I don't agree wb. If the neighbour kept the child for 24 or even 48 hours before contacting the police or social services, maybe. But for nearly three weeks - I can't see anyone thinking there's any mitigating circumstances that can justify that.

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 22:13

they said he was a distant relative of the stepfather so god knows.

agree though the outcome isnt really cause for celebration but at least she's alive and hopefully the family can all get some help now.

they said on news she had been reunited (briefly) with her mother but that she is in care now. .

Squirdle · 14/03/2008 22:14

I don't really come on the newsy threads but have to say I agree with NAB. I dunno, it's just something about the mother that isn't right.

2shoes · 14/03/2008 22:16

I am really glad she has been found safe and well. hope her life is sorted out real soon.
will leave thread now as cannot abide the amateur detective stuff

Nighbynight · 14/03/2008 22:20

How wonderful that Shannon has been found alive, whatever turns out now.

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 22:20

i just find it odd that she has been taken into secure care- and not reunited with mum- that surely means the police must suspect mum too?

i cannot imagine if my sons went missing and then when found i was not allowed to see them.

i just cannot get out of my head that she has BEGGED the police not to take her home.

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 22:21

that is my OPINION by the way...

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 14/03/2008 22:21

this is conjecture

we none of us know and should not pass judgement

please refrain

I don't think it has been reported that she has begged the police not to take her home?

and no it doesn't necessarily mean that the mother is under suspicion - it could be anyone else in the family who shannon would be at risk from if she were to return home so she is placed in care to keep her safe.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 14/03/2008 22:28

yes wannabe

why are women so quick to judge their own

Remotew · 14/03/2008 22:31

Thank god Shannon was found alive. The family must have imagined the worst. They m been so relieved. The community rallied round and are very close knit. I did find it a bit odd all the champagne celebrations when it wasnt clear exactly what ordeal the child has been through.

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 22:32

my stepsons used to beg us to not take them home when younger- they would go quiet and sit sunken into the car seats and WE felt AWFUL returning them. they were neglected- clothes stank of urine- stiff with it- a time of my life that i hate to think about.

(DH's EX was investigated and found to have abusive partner- social services took boys away from her- foster care- then as soon as they consulted me and DH about temporary care- but she booted her partner out- got kids back.

lots more i could say- just wanted to explain why I think it's possible that shannon may well have not wanted to go home- may have chosen to be where she was.

i used to lock myself in bathroom for hours to be safe at home.

MUM23ASD · 14/03/2008 22:34

WANNABE- sorry i confused you- i did state the 'begging not to go home' was MY OPINION!!!

amazing how easy it is to mislead- sorry.
