OK, so if the water was coming in you wouldn't be on MN...

Just had a call from my mum as water is coming in through the house - there is severe flooding in Lincolnshire. Thought I'd post in case anyone else had family in the area:

that bit of Lincolnshire mentioned in the floodwatch link is not the lowlying fenland - it is talking about places up in the Wolds.

Slubberdegullion · 25/06/2007 14:04

Effie, tell us about nine tailors then. Who's it by, whats it about?

Swell my knowledge a bit more.

EffiePerine · 25/06/2007 14:06

yes, in Wolds which is why I'm surprised. No floods since the Great Flood of about 1913. Anyway it'll give them something to talk about.

Nine Tailors by D L Sayers - detective story set in the Fens, lots of amusing locals and an exciting denouement when the floodgates burst and they have to leg it for the church. Bunter (valet) comes in handy for entertaining the locals with his music hall impressions.

Slubberdegullion · 25/06/2007 14:08

Is it modern, or a little known classic, mostly read by Fen dwellers.

EffiePerine · 25/06/2007 14:08

Lessons from Nine Tailors:

drive a v fast sportscar to beat the floods

don't stay in the belltower when the bells are ringing

keep your kittens in boxes in the event of being evacuated

make sure you have a good sized graveyard for Sanitary Trenches

Interesting.

You have piqued my interest I must say.

info here

great books, hero Lord Peter Wimsey with valet Bunter and love interest Harriet Vane.

NT one of her best, lots of atmospheric stuff about the Fens (and pretty accurate). Not that I'm a Fenlander, oh no

Wow, she looks like a top bird.
Why don't people wear that sort of get up anymore?

EffiePerine · 25/06/2007 14:15

She used to live a few doors from my parents' house (before they were there) and some of the neighbours remember her - they say she used to stride off to the station looking like a man.

Slubberdegullion · 25/06/2007 14:23

They're a dying breed those eccentric and rich English ladies. My grandmother was a little bit like that.

When she was alive she fell and broke her hip, we were in A&E in Luton and when she found out that she was in the Luton& Dunstable Hosp and not her beloved Bupa in Harpenden she struggled off the trolley shouting

"take me home THIS INSTANT, I'm not staying here. In Luton they steal your Haaaaaaaaaaanbaaaaaaaaaaaaag" (all said in thigmy from Importance of being Earnest's voice)

ratclare · 25/06/2007 18:45

slubber where in yorkshire did you live? wasnt ripon was it?

Hulababy · 25/06/2007 19:58

OMG other side of Sheffield to me is a nightmare. They are havig to bring in RAF helicopters to rescue trapped people, stranded in buildings.

Hulababy · 25/06/2007 19:59

There were two children, one from DD's recpetion class, stills tucj at school when we left parent's evening, just after 6:30pm. Parents still trying to get through the floods to get to them. Parents will be so stressed!

ellenjames · 25/06/2007 20:04

I Live in horncastle near watermill lane in the article its really bad and stinks and loads of houses flooded just hope we stay dry!

EffiePerine · 25/06/2007 20:07

Louth seems to be improving, so hopefully it will clear up further north and east as well

Remember to charge your laptops just in case

SpookyMadMummy · 25/06/2007 21:04

I am about a mile from the rescue operation in Sheffield. I can see at least 3 RAF helicopters flying round rescuing people from offices and homes.
Luckily I live on a hill, but we can't go anywhere. The roads are too flooded to make a journey other than a very local one.
here is the Sky News coverage

FeelingOld · 25/06/2007 21:09

I live in Lincs, not too bad in my part of town but lots of surrounding areas especially villages are flooded and so are parts of the A1 so traffic has been coming through town instead of going round iyswim, it has been gridlocked in town all day.

ELF1981 · 25/06/2007 21:52

am watching the news on BBC showing the floods in Sheffield - bloody hell.

I'm in Nottingham, there were floods in some villages near me, though it didn't seem too bad when I went to work this morning.

Hulababy · 25/06/2007 22:25

I hope DD's little friend's parents have managed to get to her okay and get her home again.

A fair few od DH's work collegaues were stuck in ton unable to get home. They had decamped to local pub and were bedding down on the floor of one of the girl's city centre flat.

Menarefrommars · 25/06/2007 22:29

Lincoln - doesn't appear to be affected ATM

PandaG · 25/06/2007 22:33

Friend stuck at work at the Northern General Hospital.

Sheffield Arena now a rescue relief centre.

13 yr old swept away by burst river, body found within the last hour.

we, like Hula, live on one of the 7 hills of Sheff so are ok, but can't quite believe thw footage!

joash · 25/06/2007 22:35

My Two DD's and DIL live in rotherham but work in Sheffield - all arrived home safely (journeys took hours rather than minutes - but at least they're safe). All family and friends finally traced apart from 1 - she lives alone and I am very concerned for her at the moment, still trying to get her on the phone. My brother just called after trying to get him since 3 this afternoon. Some family and friends currently without power - but more concerned re' friend who I cant get hold of.
