FLOODS - are you affected?

OK, so if the water was coming in you wouldn't be on MN...

Just had a call from my mum as water is coming in through the house - there is severe flooding in Lincolnshire. Thought I'd post in case anyone else had family in the area:

Have managed to arrange a lift back to my car so I don't need to go on a two mile walk through the steel workds.

Hulababy · 26/06/2007 15:55

Good news. Hope your journey is uneventful

SaintGeorge · 26/06/2007 16:52

Our street flooded yesterday and it got dangerously close to the house. It stopped raining for a little while and we thought we had got away with it then suddenly, at 10pm, water starting rising through the carpet with no warning. Within 15 minutes we had 2 inches of filthy, stinking water all through the ground floor. Got to about 4 inches at the worst overnight, by the looks of the tidemarks!

It has just about receded in the house now, but obviously the floors are soaked through and you raise puddles when you walk . The whole place stinks! A guy has been canoeing up and down the street all day. DH & the kids waded a mile to meet up with my SIL, who has whisked the kids to her house for a couple of days.

Most of the local roads and shops are closed. We have managed to get 2 elderly neighbours to safety thanks to the emergency services and the rest of us are sharing the contents of fridges and freezers as we are all running out of bread and milk.

How can you have the great british spirit without a cup of tea and that would be awful without the milk

Kathyis6incheshigh · 26/06/2007 16:58

Oh no

Does sound like you are being remarkably resilient about it.

BikeBug · 26/06/2007 16:58

Spent 3 hours this morning trying to get from home (Sheffield) to work (Rotherham) while DH tried to get to Leeds. We both gave up eventually and have had a lovely afternoon off and a nice walk around Ladybower. Wish that was all the floods meant for everyone, but am at some of Sheffield this morning

Hulababy · 26/06/2007 16:59

Oh no, what a nightmare for you. Whereabouts are you?

Hulababy · 26/06/2007 17:00

BikeBug - I was trying to get from Sheffield to Doncaster, gave up too. Was pointless.

M1 still not open according to BBC website.

SaintGeorge · 26/06/2007 17:03

I'm in Hull. Some parts of the city are apparently dry as a bone, others are 4 ft deep. I think we got off lightly.

And I wanted a new carpet downstairs anyway. Big through lounge, would have been expensive. Hoorah for house insurance

Hulababy · 26/06/2007 17:04

Hope you get everything sorted asap. Sounds like here - some parts, like where I am are unaffected but plenty of others are having a nightmare.

prufrock · 26/06/2007 17:08

My parent's village was on news24 last night - the cricket pitch behind their house (fortunately some way behind) had walls built a few years ago so it could be used as a flood plain, and is still completely full of water. Water was lapping at their front doorstep but fortunately didn't come over, but my great aunt and uncle have lost everything - their bungalow is still under 4 feet of water

OrmIrian · 26/06/2007 17:12

I feel so sorry for all those poor people. It does seem to be terrible

We are on the Somerset Levels so below or at sea-level. The town is mostly protected by defences along the rive built in the 70s but hte surrounding areas do have problems. I can't help feeling it's only a matter of time though...

SaintGeorge · 26/06/2007 17:12

Cheers Hula.

I've logged it with our insurers already but it will be days I would think before we hear anything from them. Meanwhile, we can't throw anything away in case we need to prove our losses.

And there are only so many things we can eat made from minced beef, which my freezer was pretty full of. We need to eat it or throw it, the power was off for hours.

Burger anyone?

lou33 · 26/06/2007 17:16

i feel like i am living in another country, we have had no problems at all here

SpookyMadMummy · 26/06/2007 17:33

M1 still shut, I can see it from our house. Dh says only maintenance and service vehicles are on it just in case Ulley Reservoir bursts.

SaintGeorge · 26/06/2007 17:34

I really hope that holds.

The amount of homes in the way AND the power station. That would be Sheffield's power supply gone.

Hulababy · 26/06/2007 17:37

Lots of roads still shut according to BBC website. Fingers crossed Ulley stays stable. Trouble is more rain is forecast at the end of the week.

SpookyMadMummy · 26/06/2007 17:39

St George, the power supply threatened serves much of South Yorkshire.
My sister has been without power since yesterday evening and YEDL have told her it won;t be back on in the imminent few hours. It;s likely to be tomorrow but no guarantees. She is in Rotherham onthe outskirts of the town centre but currently camping here.

joash · 26/06/2007 17:41

DD2 is in Rotherham and has had no power or water since 3am this morning - not much hope of getting any quickly either.

SaintGeorge · 26/06/2007 17:42

Wow, I didn't realise that station covered such an area.

Our supply is still holding at the moment, but there have been some power cuts locally.

Strictly speaking we shouldn't have turned ours back on this morning (switched it off last night when we escaped upstairs) but DH had a good look at the wiring before we risked it.

Just found out one of my neighbours is away. Poor buggers are going to come back to the damage Not a nice way to end your holiday.

Hulababy · 26/06/2007 17:42

DD's teacher wasn't in today. She lives in Rotherham and has no power.

joash · 26/06/2007 17:44

[quick thread hijack] I'm amazed at how many MNers are in the Rotherham area - there were very few when I lived there. Wonder if I know you

Joash whereabouts is your dd?

joash · 26/06/2007 17:50

Never sure whether it's called eastwood or East Dene. She's just off Doncaster Road before you get to the Eastwood Pub

laneydaye · 26/06/2007 17:51

Im in North of sheffield and my ds school has been shut down due to damage to the roof,
Its so devastating though to sit and watch what is happening just a couple of miles down the road..
