OK, so if the water was coming in you wouldn't be on MN...

Just had a call from my mum as water is coming in through the house - there is severe flooding in Lincolnshire. Thought I'd post in case anyone else had family in the area:

She had gone to my mothers with a view to staying the night and 10 mins after she arrived her neighbour called to tell her she had power.

Hulababy · 27/06/2007 06:42

M1 and Parkway still closed at the moment. How do I get to work?! Looks like another several hours sat in the car trying!

PandaG · 27/06/2007 07:41

oh Hula, and everyone else, hope you have safe journeys today, or that your bosses allow you to work from home.

bozza · 27/06/2007 09:17

My boss is working from home, but the rest of us are supposed to come in and e-mail her when we get here. Took 1 hr today as opposed to 40 mins normally and 2 hours yesterday so things are improving.

bozza · 27/06/2007 09:18

No further word from hula - do we assume she is stuck in a jam somewhere? I gather the traffic is getting worse as the mroning goes on - lots of people not got here yet.

PandaG · 27/06/2007 11:43

till nothing form Hula, let's hope she is at work. We will be having scheduled power cuts here, in order to get people without back on. I am expecting no power this afternoon - had notification on the grapevine, do not know if it is right or not!

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 27/06/2007 12:01

Lost our electricity (and phones) on Monday evening at about 6.30 and got them back at about 9am Tuesday. Strangely, the local town has flooded today, despite not having had any rain yet today. Shops shut, traffic chaos and have been advised not to go in.

Gingerbear · 27/06/2007 12:14

If Ulley Dam in Rotherham breaches today, we are history here by the Don

GlassSlipper · 27/06/2007 13:06

I was on the first floor flat of a block flooded out a few years ago and anyone affected has my sympathy. The silt stinks and gets into everything. I only had to clear up the communal hallway but the neighbours had months of haggling with the insurance companies (those that were insured) and the clean up took ages....

SpookyMadMummy · 27/06/2007 16:35

Have just googled about the situation with the M1 and the Highways agency expect to reopen it at 7pm tonight.

Hulababy · 27/06/2007 17:52

The M1 has now partially opened. The first cars were allowed back on at about 5 o'clock. Sadly just a bit too late for me. Junctions 33 nd 34 are still closed because of flooding on the local roads. The Parkway is still closed due to flooding.

Journey much better today. Took 2.5 hours to ge tto work, which was a pain but bearable, and then much better this evening despite the detour - 1.5 hours to school, so only 30 min delay.

Hulababy · 27/06/2007 17:53

Couldn't update earlier as no internet at the prison, other than the BBC website.

Hulababy · 27/06/2007 17:55

Has anyone experienced the phased power cuts. I know our postcode was supposed to be affected. Was apparantly going to be phased throughout powercuts all day and into tomorrow, for 3 hours at a time - to share the power around all the houses.

Not had one here from what I can gather. Heard about them on way to work and made DH put towels under freezer just in case! And I have sorted out dinner that only needs the hob to cook - I can light the gas without the electric ignition.

PandaG · 27/06/2007 17:59

No phased power cut here yet either, although DH's office was promptly evacuated at 5.15 so the alarm could definitely be set while the power was still on. Had heard power would be off 3 - 6 but it didn't happen

Hulababy · 27/06/2007 18:04

Maybe they managed to cope without? They did suggest if everyone turned off unnecessary electrical equipment they might not have to take such drastic action. Peak time will be in a hour I guess when everyone is home from work, making dinner.

SpookyMadMummy · 27/06/2007 18:10

I think with the power cuts its a 50/50 chance of parts of Sheffield being affected. Further info hereThe article about power rationing shows the affected postcodes.

j20baby · 27/06/2007 20:19

well, i went into work today for a staff meeting, which was incidently actually scheduled for next week, but anyway-it was still flooded, outside the water had drained but the carpets where sodden(and i had flipflops on!)and the gym was still 6 inches under water, what a mess, my heart goes out to those who's homes have been affected

UnquietDad · 27/06/2007 20:51

We had a powercut in S6, from 3-ish to 6-ish. S5 had just been off before us.

PandaG · 27/06/2007 21:20

power still ok here (S10)

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 08:45

Very sad for those flooded and stranded too. Heard that a woman at work has been flooded out, not sure how bad yet.

I gave up trying to get to work today. I sat in the car for 1.5 hours and got nowhere near the motorway. Couldn't face another 2.5 hour drive, and then trying to get home later. It is DD's first sport's day and didn't want to risk missing it. I will make up the half day next week - advantages of flexible part time fortunately.

The radio keeps saying the Parkway and the J33 slip road is open, but it wasn't. Think it has encouraged more cars to try and get out of Sheffield. So the queues are horrendous today, much worse than yesterday even.

Radio also said more power cuts envsiaged today. We haven't been affected yet.

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 28/06/2007 08:53

Nan lives in S5. She said they've had a few power cuts but are OK.

bozza · 28/06/2007 10:32

It must be easier making up time now your DD is at school hula. I always struggle because of DD still being at nursery. The road outside work is still flooded but other than that it was a reasonable journey into work now the M1 is open - I was actually here by 8.10 this morning!

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 10:34

Glad you got in okay.

Yes, much easier now DD is busy 5 days a week. I just have that bit of flexibility now that I didn't have before.

Hopefully the M1 sliproads and parkway are now all open properly.

katz · 28/06/2007 10:36

hi all fellow sheffieldiers, rather remarkably we got to leeds yesterday from Sheffield in 45 mins!

Any more power cuts today? my friend in walkley says there power has been on and off all night which is more annoying than no power.

UnquietDad · 28/06/2007 10:37

The west of the city has escaped the worst. No concidence. Those Victorian industrialists knew what they were doing. The sturdy stone houses up at Ranmoor, Fulwood, etc., which used to be home to the Evil Factory Bosses in the 19th century and now house most of Sheffield's middle-classes, almost entirely escaped the floods by virtue of being high up. The worst of the chaos, of course, hit the factory areas down at Brightside and Attercliffe, level with the river, and the estates like Winn Gardens (the one which has been on the news the most). In fact, it's a class divide which is literally antediluvian...
