OK, so if the water was coming in you wouldn't be on MN...

Just had a call from my mum as water is coming in through the house - there is severe flooding in Lincolnshire. Thought I'd post in case anyone else had family in the area:

Hi ktaz.

None here.

Friend who works in Leeds has been saying he is getting to work quicker than normal at the moment. Certainly Tuesday/Wednesday the volume of traffic out and about was much less than normal. Also. the M1 was much quieter that direction as people comeing from the South couldn't get to it.

PandaG · 28/06/2007 10:39

POwer still ok here, but off 6 -10 ish last night Stannington View Road way Katz. More cuts likely so they said at school.

Sorry to hear you couldn't get in to work today Hula, let's hope it is all better after the weekend!

katz · 28/06/2007 11:06

we had no power last night from 6-10pm with it on breifly at 9

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 28/06/2007 11:22

Power here (DN22) been OK since Mon night/Tues morning. Both supermarkets in town now closed because they are flooded, and the small outlying shops have no milk, bread, coffee, sugar etc etc. I think there has been an element of panic buying, which really pisses me off. I managed to procure 2 pints of semi-skimmed and a loaf of wholemeal from the Co-op in Bawtry last night whilst on my way to Doncaster. DD1 not at school today - closed because so many staff can't make it in (apparently the park in the town is under 3 feet of water! Thank God it's the park, and not the houses, although plenty of houses are affected. I feel so sorry for them - we are very lucky to be that bit far enough away from the river. You'd never know that anything was wrong if you stood outside my house, but less than a mile away it's wiped out.

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 11:27

It's really sad isn't it

Like that where we are. Completely dry and no problems. But head to the other side of town and it is devastation.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 28/06/2007 11:31

The saddest part is that with water (and dirty water at that) is the clean up takes forever. My friend's mother was intears on the phone yesterday because all her carpets have had to have been taken up, the water has seeped up the curtains and the place has been left littered with dead rats and a dead fox. She said it absolutely stinks to high heaven, and she can't imagine how long it will take to clean up.

I just don't know how the shops, especially the supermarkets, are going to bounce back. It must be wrecked in there.

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 11:32

It will take a lot of cleaning up.

If your friend's mum needs help Radio 2 have teamed up with CSV to offer help for people affected by the floods - help to celan up, run errans, etc. More details on their website.

Caught some goldfish in our street last night.

PMSL though watching one guy who was taking his dog for a walk. Dog found a dry area and did his business, guy went to pick it up in plastic bag and the heap floated off! Cue bloke wading through water trying to catch it as it floated off down the road. Round of applause from onlookers when he bagged it

Bad news is weather warning of possible further 50mm at the weekend. Sandbagging won't help us as the water table isn't dropping (1cm below our floorboards at moment) so we will probably flood again.

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 11:40

Oh SG, what a nightmare. Really hope the rain forecast doesn't come or is much less than predicted.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 28/06/2007 11:40

Thanks for the info, Hula.

Fortunately, my friend is loaded, so has despatched 'a man' to help her mother. I am disappointed with her attitude, though. She could have helped her mother herself, but didn't (she's a rather selfish individual) and has gone off shopping in London instead. She hasn't even been over to offer support, but then that would be a whole new thread...

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 11:41

That does seem very off. Can't imagine just leaving my parents to get on with it.

SaintGeorge · 28/06/2007 11:44

Spoken to insurers who reckon they are sending a local assessor, but I doubt he will turn up, there are just too many places for them to check out.

Apparently the normal routine in these situations is they check a sample property in each area and set a cap on claims based on that. Other claims go through automatically unless they exceed the cap, when they will get a visit from the assessor to see why.

bozza · 28/06/2007 11:45

stg you are being very matter of fact about it all. 50mm is a lot more water though isn't it?

unquietdad interesting observations. but the industry is near to the water because it needs to use it, isn't it? And the workers needed to be nearer to the work than the bosses, funnily enough. My boss has been working from home until today.

SaintGeorge · 28/06/2007 12:08

If I don't find something to laugh about I will sit down and weep - and it's wet enough around here already

50mm is nearly 2 inches, I think they said we had about twice that the first time. It was standing 4ft deep outside.

Nothing I can do to change it so might as well just get on with it.

bozza · 28/06/2007 12:10

Yes we had 77mm on Monday, but we already had a lot the week before.

UnquietDad · 28/06/2007 12:59

Thse "staged" powercuts in Sheffield are being done in a bit of a way. We've had two three-hour cuts in S6 so far, when some other postcodes on the list have had none. Still, should be grateful we're not 3 feet deep in silage, I suppose!

katz · 28/06/2007 13:03

link here to power cut times based on postcode power cuts

UnquietDad · 28/06/2007 13:04

Thankz katz. I'd seen that, but still think they are not quite going about it in the sequentuial way which was suggested. I'm sure there is more to it.

katz · 28/06/2007 13:06

uniquedad - our postcode features twice! so no power now and none again later! great! not sure what the logic to it is, i guess they keep adding houses to existing lines nad see if it can take it.

phee96 · 28/06/2007 15:49

My house in Darfield got flooded on Friday 15th so we've have been living with family sleeping on their sofa ever since. Pics of my fiance even ended up on the BBC website! It completely filled our cellar which has been converted into a room and came up about 2ft into the ground floor of the house. We just started to get the house dried out and got flooded again on Monday 25th. It completely submerged the cellar again and came in about 4ft into the ground floor of the house. It now looks like we're going to be out of our house for at least 3 months and we're getting married in 2 months. However, since the floods on Monday, I'm feeling pretty lucky that all we've lost is most of the stuff in the downstairs of our house and that none of us were hurt!

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 15:52

My postcode is not on the list, although I am in S10.

Katz if you need anything let me know or even if you need to get a shower/dinner - just shout. Looks like we are power cut free.

phee96 - oh no, what a nightmare for you. Really sorry. If you need anything please say and we can see what we can do.

phee96 · 28/06/2007 15:55

Thanks. Tbh, we've been lucky with the insurance company. There are an awful lot of people near us who are much worse off. I just know that if it rains again, we'll be seeing the fireman again for the third time in as many weeks.

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 16:00

Fingers crossed this weekend reamins dry.

bilblio · 28/06/2007 18:06

inamuckingfuddle - hope your parents managed to make it up to Durham the other day. All that info about going through Oughtibridge probably being the best route sort of went out the window during the following night when the main road to the village collapsed into the river. It's a steep banking down to the river and the flood waters had taken away too much of the soil to support the road any longer. It was all re-enforced a couple of years ago too.
There's now a 5 mile diversion in place to cover the short distance that's been affected.

For those who know the area it's Hangman's Bend, just after the Middlewood Tavern. The diversion takes you up Stockarth Lane, over Worrall then back down into Oughtibridge.

My parents power came back on yesterday at 6pm after being off for 50+ hours. I was checking the times of the rolling power cuts for my parents and my brother who lives in S6 and neither of them seemed to tie up with what the website said. They're all just keeping the torches handy and feeling grateful they live up a hill.

inamuckingfuddle · 28/06/2007 18:45

Hi bilblio yes they made it via the moors took 3.5 hours! Hope you are all getting sorted now, my parents have decided to get back tomorrow teatime before the next downpour which might leave them stranded here
