For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World

Don't you just love the elevated level of debate on Mumsnet...

toomuchtodo · 16/05/2007 18:26

don't expect you to agree ng

I was talking about my family and friends, not strangers on a website

munz · 16/05/2007 18:26

fgs

a little girl being found alive safe and well ios all that matters here - the bloody ins and outs of what the parents did/didn't do are irrelvant. would I leave my child like that no I wouldn't but it's not me it's them, and either way they will have to live with that fact for the rest of their lives. if they'd been in the apt and asleep what's to say they would have heard an intruder anyways?

NKF · 16/05/2007 18:26

Too Much - I think it's one of those situations where your view on the safety issue entirely depends on whether you would do it or have done it. If you are in that camp, you're exasperated by people who are shocked. And if you wouldn't go out to dinner in those circumstances - and many people wouldn't - then you're shocked that people would. Either way, you can still be appalled at what happened and believe that the person who took her should be severely punished.

toomuchtodo · 16/05/2007 18:29

of course they should be punished

no doubt about that

Dora74 · 16/05/2007 18:29

James Bulgers parents were poor and from a council flat in a run down area of Liverpool..But the media certaintly took hold of that story and it made new worldwide...And don't forget this ws back in 93..before 24 hrs news coverage.
It made no difference that the parents were not middle class..in fact i think some posters on another site are actually vilifying the maccanns BECAUSE they are middle class...A lot of nasty people actually take against them because they are well off educated people..whereas if it was a single mum from a council flat.i think some of these same people would be defending her.
Not anyone here...just the impression I got from a nasty cow on the disney site.

kookaburra · 16/05/2007 18:30

Is it now definitely established that hse was taken from the apartment itself?

NKF · 16/05/2007 18:30

I know you think that Too Much. Everyone does. I'm just flagging up this irritating line of argument that seems to go "if you are shocked at the leaving a child to go out to dinner at a Mark Warner resort then you are smug and unkind and lacking in empathy."

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/05/2007 18:31

I do think that a lot more people think it's wrong to leave young children than have said so publically. A lot of people simply feel that it's inappropriate to voice that opinion at this point in time.

I do think however that if it transpires that Madeleine wandered out of the apartment and was snatched randomly, that the media and a lot of public opinion will turn, and the debate over the rights and wrongs of leaving young children will come up again. We all know how unlikely it is that a child would be snatched from their bed. Children being snatched off the street is almost unheard of but from a hotelroom ... most parents would never even consider it could happen. But the possibility of a child getting up and wandering is far, far greater, and I think if this is what happened then a lot more questions will be asked as to how appropriate it is to leave small children.

donnie · 16/05/2007 18:32

" of course they should be punished" ?

oh my God. Now I have heard it all. What punishment would you deem suitable? is having your child abducted and probably murdered not 'bad' enough for you? what a vile and disgusting comment, which incidentally I intend to report to MNHQ.

munz · 16/05/2007 18:32

agree dora and iirc, (althou forgive me if I don't as I was only 11 myself) JB was taken from his mum in a shopping centre. in this day and age it can happen anywhere at any time, the parents have to live with their choices no matter what's happened. if these people/person want to take a LO for what ever reasons they'll find a way no matter what.

hunkermunker · 16/05/2007 18:32

I would be more worried about one of the DSs waking up and being upset we weren't there and possibly coming to try and find us or being sick or something than an abduction - that's why I wouldn't leave them to go and have dinner.

But then I'd loathe a Mark Warner holiday anyway, so I'm never likely to be in that position.

Some people would leave their children, some wouldn't. All would hope for the safe return of Madeleine.

Can we leave the fighting, ladies, please?

toomuchtodo · 16/05/2007 18:33

wanna -- interesting point

hunkermunker · 16/05/2007 18:34

Donnie, I think TooMuch was talking about the abductor, not the parents being punished.

NKF · 16/05/2007 18:34

Interesting, Wannabe. And also this comparison between Mark Warner and a hotel room which many people have made. As far as I can tell - I've never been on a package holiday - a resort is a public place whereas a hotel is semi-private and a villa totally private.

munz · 16/05/2007 18:34

donnie I think she was meaning whome ever took the LO not the parents. which of course parents not punished offender most definatly should.

NKF · 16/05/2007 18:35

Donnie's remark indicates how hysterical this thread has become.

toomuchtodo · 16/05/2007 18:35

donnie get a grip woman!

I meant the person who snatched Maddie should be punished!

are we on the same website?

donnie · 16/05/2007 18:36

ok - apologies if I misinterpreted. But I am sick of people slagging off the parents here.

NKF · 16/05/2007 18:37

No-one has Donnie.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/05/2007 18:37

so back to the case, someone said earlier that sky news had reported that another property was being searched, yet all has gone quite on that front - news blackout praps?

munz · 16/05/2007 18:38

exactly it's done now and can't be changed the focus should be on finding the girl. not the ins/outs.

NKF · 16/05/2007 18:38

People don't seem to mind the ins and outs of Murat's glass eye.

toomuchtodo · 16/05/2007 18:39

I wasn't slagging them off, they have my utmost sympathy for the horrendous situation they are in

but I stand by my original post, most people I know wouldn't have left 3 young kiddies alone for a dinner out

different strokes/different folks

mumemma · 16/05/2007 18:41

Bloody hell, stop going on about "I wouldn't do it..." - this isn't about you and your impeccable parenting - it's a NEWS thread.
