For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World
OP posts:

pagwatch..I better not look at that site..I think i'll explode in anger..either that or be sick at the number of vile people walking the streets and actually bringing up kids themselves when they are so devoid of any human compassion.
I think THEIR kids should be taken into care..lest they grow up as lacking as their nasty parents.

JARM · 16/05/2007 17:14

I assume to help fund the family staying in Portugal, when you go on a 2 week holiday, you dont expect to be there for weeks afterwards. To enable the family to have relatives flown over to comfort, support and help with the twins?

Dora74 · 16/05/2007 17:15

wannabe...is the fund for privite investigation?..or i think I heard for the mccanns continued expenses in portugal..lawyers ect..iam not sure??

Dora74 · 16/05/2007 17:16

Jarm..i think I read that mark warner were going to pay for flights for family etc for as long as they needed it.

mumemma · 16/05/2007 17:17

Robert Murat has now spoken to the BBC - not on BBC website yet but presumably will be soon and on news updates on TV.

I've seen some ridiculous things too on other boards too - much worse than anything on here on one board, someone said that because Kate McCann wore lipstick and earrings to make an appeal, she must be guilty! FFS!! There was worse but not worth repeating here.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe - not sure I totally understand the fighting fund either. 'Mounting costs' were mentioned. Surely Mark Warner is providing accommodation for the family? I know there may be lawyers costs as the family decided to fly some lawyers over but not totally sure the public should be asked to contribute to those types of costs. Not being in any way uncharitable here but personally think they are better served by encouraging people to pledge time, effort and goodwill in the search and direct any donations to a wider charitable fund helping all missing/vulnerable children.

ToughDaddy · 16/05/2007 17:21

I imagaine the fund will be multipurpose but is there to catch the goodwill whilst it is there. I am sure that if they found the little one safe and sound they would ask donors to put it to good use. It could help with private investigation, rewards, all sorts that we can only speculate about. Best thing we can do is to try to keep the circulation of her photos etc going but I fear that the media drama of the suspect could detract from that.

ToughDaddy · 16/05/2007 17:29

worth considering focussing on helping with publicity. I will be donating to the fund as I sure that there are costs involved and frankly it is in very bad form to be speculating like this. Just don't contribute if you don't want to. They have asked for your help but they aren't public property so plse afford them some dignity with your good manners even if they aren't reading the site!

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/05/2007 17:29

I too thought that Mark Warner were paying for flights/accommodation for as long as was needed. Also they have appointed someone to essentially act as pres officer for the mccanns so that?s not something they need to deal with either? As for lawyers etc, tbh I don?t think the public should be asked to contribute towards that. I know that often in these cases someone often sets up a fighting fund,a newspaper for example, and the family usually speaks of their gratitude for that, but for the family to take it upon themselves to set up a fund for people to donate money just seems .. wrong somehow.

mumemma · 16/05/2007 17:33

Just watched Sky News (please forgive me!) - they have got everyone and his dog commenting, including the man who built Jenny Murat's villa!

The Russian that was mentioned in the Portuguese press and reported on here earlier is the computer engineer who set up Murat's website and has done work generally on his computer systems.

However, if there is a development of any sort, whilst watching there was a sudden rush of journalists heading down towards another property which is apparently now being searched.

mumemma · 16/05/2007 17:34

ToughDaddy, I am not speculating but trying to understand. From some of the shocking negative comments on other boards, I just think it's important to keep the public on their side.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/05/2007 17:34

I also wonder whether a lot of the negative comments aimed at the family have something to do with the perception of how they would be treated if they had been of a different social standing.

I find it annoying when any news report says ?doctors, Kate and Gerry? or ?gerry, a cardiologist?? and even making reference to their ?£600000 house?, if they were both cleaners and lived in a housing association property would the media still tell us that? I think not somehow, I also think that if the couple were not from a middle class background then the media?s attitude towards them would have been vastly different, and it?s wrong. Everyone should get the same treatment, and a poor man?s child is no less precious than the child of someone who can afford a £600000 house.

ToughDaddy · 16/05/2007 17:34

We are not speaking from a position of knowledge on this.

Just don't contribute if you don't want to. They have asked for your help but they aren't public property so plse afford them some dignity with your good manners even if they aren't reading the site!

mumemma · 16/05/2007 17:37

Anyway, apparently another property is now being searched.

ChocolateFace · 16/05/2007 17:38

If you check out the Find Madeleine website, it does tell you what donated money will be used for.

I would imagine, more specifically, the family's mortgage, lawers, private investigaters.

Budababe · 16/05/2007 17:46

The McCanns have said they cannot see themselves going home until the situation is resolved. Presumably they will not be paid if they are not working so will therefore need their day to day expenses covered. I would imagine they might want to hire private investigators at some point if the police don't come up with anything.

As others have said - if you don't feel comfortable with the fund idea then don't donate. It does seem to be all public and "above board" as it were and they have said they are looking for an adminstrator. Presumably a local firm of accountants will step forward to do this.

toomuchtodo · 16/05/2007 17:46

wanna, you have talked an awful lot of sense on this thread and your last post was spot on

although we are all hoping and praying for a positive outcome for the McCann's, I believe most parents are secretly appalled that they left 3 youngsters alone to go out to dinner and if it wasn't for their middle class status they would have been vilified by most of the media.

niceglasses · 16/05/2007 17:50

I'm not 'appalled'in one slightest bit. Have done similar things myself. Nothing but sympathy, who ever they are. I'm just keeping up with developments via 10 o clock news each day as there are too many arguments, but really and truly I am not in one slightest bit appalled.

kookaburra · 16/05/2007 18:01

WBWIWB and TMTD well said.
I couldn't beleive my ears when I heard about a 'fighting fund'. Harnessing people's sympathy is one thing, and but their wallets!!!!!!'This is not the Tsumami, tho' some people, and Sky News seem to want to inflate it to those proportions.
LOL at the idea of interviewing all these peripheral characters.
Would have had a lot more respect if the MCCann publicity machine had said 'please keep her in your thoughts and do what you can to keep the search goinfg, and donate to a childrens charity on her behalf'

amidaiwish · 16/05/2007 18:13

oh i am getting off this thread now.
and if you have never been to a resort or to a mark warner holiday you will never understand
they didn't piss off out to a restaurant
they were on the resort right opposite the apartment ffs.
the only one in the wrong is the sicker f*+$er who has taken her.

enough.
let's not go through that again. and if you want to start your own thread about it. again.

donnie · 16/05/2007 18:16

exactly.

a girl was snatched a few months ago FROM HER BATH FOR CHRIST'S SAKE - WHILE HER MUM WAS IN THE FUCKING HOUSE.

enough already.

kookaburra · 16/05/2007 18:17

Yes, her mum was in the hosue and alerted the police and she was quickly found. Becuse her mum was right there in the house.

toomuchtodo · 16/05/2007 18:21

knew I'd be inviting arguements with my last post

but everyone who I've discussed this with is saying the exact same as me

niceglasses · 16/05/2007 18:22

'quickly found' - dumped in a snowy lane about 3 miles from me actually. I think if Madeline had been dumped they would have found her too.

niceglasses · 16/05/2007 18:22

Well I'm discussing, and I'm not agreeing.

donnie · 16/05/2007 18:24

crawl back into your coven, kookaborra.
