One thing that is bothering me is the enablers.

I read a long article about HW in the New Yorker, and one victim says that she was contacted by a female aide to attend a casting session... which turned out to be for one. And another who says she was invited to a party where the only guest was HW in his hotel room. Again this was set up by a third party.

So much of his entourage/employees must have known about his activities... but to actually set them up ? Maybe turning a blind eye because you don't want to lose your job, but asking someone to attend a casting session which you know to be a "trap" - that is so not decent behaviour that the individual concerned should be blamed too.

InigoTaran · 03/11/2017 13:37

I agree about the enablers, how did they think that it was ok to do this?

This is a brilliant article about the media coverage of late and how much of it has belittled and trivialised the issue. News night the other day was bloody appalling!

Lauren O'Connor did try. As you probably already know, she was the one who wrote what was happening in a memo two years ago. They paid her off iirc but I am not sure whether her going to the press at that time would have brought him down. He had the press in his pocket.
They always say to report to someone senior and that is what she did.
Without that memo not sure they would have gone to press eventually and sadly I still think it only happened because his brother leaked it:

But yes, Lauren O’Connor was a former employee of the Weinstein Company who ''was involved in casting discussions with many actresses shortly after they were invited to “private appointments” with Weinstein in his hotel room''
O’Connor expressed fear that Weinstein was using her and other female employees to “facilitate liaisons with ‘vulnerable women who hope he will get them work.’” That same year, Weinstein allegedly reached a settlement with O’Connor.

O'Connor felt she was an enabler, that much is clear, an unwilling accomplice and had the conscience to bring it up to execs who sat on the information (having already been aware but doing nothing, which is why lawyers are going after the company now for out of statute complainants). Some other assistants also had NDAs and were sexually harassed at work.

But it was not just women* who were used as enablers/asked to leave once victim was in the room. (Nor do I believe all ''assistants'' actually worked for him, there were at least two cases involving asking victims for threesomes whereby the second female I think was posing as an assistant).

*Fabrizio Lombardo's name came up as an enabler/fixer
*Rick Schwartz is the other assistant named in Zoe Brock's allegation

HangryHanderson · 03/11/2017 13:50

Lombardo denied it he would, wouldn't he?
Schwartz has not commented to my knowledge (he was named after an assistant was incorrectly named, which never helps, and he has good lawywers)

HangryHanderson · 03/11/2017 13:54

Plus, this isn't the movies, it's not the film The Accused, you aren't going to get the ones ''who made it happen''. All you can do is go after the Weinstein Company who must have known who they were paying off and why. On top of that, whilst I totally see your point, the rape ultimately lies with the rapist.

HangryHanderson · 03/11/2017 13:55

That doesn't mean I understand how Schwartz is able to sleep at night if Brock's allegations are true.

Chestervase1 · 03/11/2017 13:57

What about the Hedge Fund manager in the news today who beat a girl so hard her implant flipped. Abusive animals in all walks of life. Shame someone doesn’t beat that animal

CaveMum · 03/11/2017 20:20

Corey Feldman has named Jon Grissom as one of those who abused him in the 1980s

He has also named a former child talent agent called Marty Weiss as an abuser.

Both men have since been convicted of child abuse offences.

It's good that he has started to name people. The film would just take too long.

Did you see the Green Party have complained re the newsnight coverage? www.greenparty.org.uk/news/2017/11/02/green-party-complains-to-newsnight-over-sexual-harassment-coverage/

Alwaysinmyheart · 04/11/2017 10:28

Oh I'm glad about that letter, the Newsnight program was one of the worst things I've ever seen on TV, I couldn't quite believe what I was watching, it was like something out of the 1970s! Shock

MrMagnoliasBoot · 04/11/2017 11:27

I don't know how to copy links but the BBC has beven accused of not investigating allegations of sexual harrassessment against Chris Evans

MrMagnoliasBoot · 04/11/2017 11:30

Hopefully this works

Did someone mention he was friends with HW?

Datun · 04/11/2017 11:41

I’ve heard that about Evans before. How he would sit completely naked in his office. He has this reputation as something of a mavrick, but being naked in a work environment and expecting colleagues and subordinates to accept it, absolutely constitutes sexual harassment.

I remember when Moira Stuart first joined his radio programme. She had a very good reputation, but had been out of the limelight for a while.

It’s difficult to explain, but I got a very strong feeling from the initial ‘by play’ between them in the early days, which was driven by him. He came across very alpha male and controlling. Whilst at the same time having an attitude that he needed to tread carefully, but only on his terms.

Frankly I find him incredibly controlling when he talks to other people on his programme. There is absolutely nothing humble or self-deprecating about him. It wouldn’t surprise me if he turned out to be a massive bully.

He pays lip service to the heavyweights in the industry, but you get the impression that it’s all very superficial because, to him, he is the biggest heavyweight there is.

Alwaysinmyheart · 04/11/2017 18:21

This is doing the rounds on Twitter today, it's Uma Thurman's response when asked about sexual harassment in Hollywood, her restrained anger is palpable!

badbadhusky · 04/11/2017 18:32

That clip makes me want to put an arm around Uma in a show of solidarity and support (with her permission, of course).

Datun · 04/11/2017 18:35

Wow! Go Uma.

I can’t wait to see what she does say when she has her ducks in a row.

derxa · 04/11/2017 21:07

Words are cheap

badbadhusky · 04/11/2017 21:15

I’m not sure I follow, Derxa. Do you think Uma is putting it on? Do you doubt her sincerity?

Screepy · 04/11/2017 21:19

Thurman's statement will be interesting as she has close ties with Tarantino....

Datun · 04/11/2017 21:29

She was hijacked at an award. I’m certainly giving her the benefit of the doubt.

I have little doubt that she will make a statement.

BlessedBeTheFruit · 04/11/2017 21:52

I was thinking that Screepy.

badbadhusky · 04/11/2017 22:42

Me three. QT makes my flesh creep, so I’ve always found his close relationship with UT and ithers mystifying.

cuirderussie · 04/11/2017 22:46

Wasn't Tarantino her boyfriend at some point?

It'll be interesting to hear what she has to say. Sometimes the penny drops about certain things much later in life.

Alwaysinmyheart · 05/11/2017 00:38

This is a great ( IMO) angry article challenging the view about 'witchhunts ' of men accused of sexual harassment and no actually, it's not gone far enough, it's only just begun...!
