I think it is absolutely right that a school pupil of whichever sex can wear the traditional uniform of either sex.

However, I am slightly more concerned that this individual has also been granted the right to use toilet and changing facilities of the opposite sex - this bothers me as these areas are sex segregated for good reason Sad

This is in the UK btw.

A man reasoning that he is really a woman because he likes things that women like is not a delusion then? I wouldn't say that reasoning makes sense

devilinmyshoes · 20/10/2016 10:54

As for an association between body dysmorphic disorder and gender dysphoria there is a subtype of BDD where this loss of insight that was previously seen as delusional (but is no longer conceptualised as such - it's just an obsessive compulsive spectrum disorder). However patients with BDD who have surgery are not satisfied, their distress is not abated (albeit possibly temporarily) in fact they may become worse. Conversely, those with identify as transgender who seek gender affirming surgery tend to do much better (and when they don't it is because they have other issues and may have thought everything would be miraculously better afterwards when there is no panacea).

ageingrunner · 20/10/2016 10:56

Are there many people who have GRS who don't have any other co morbid conditions? I'm not sure I believe that. Maybe I'm delusional?

Felascloak · 20/10/2016 10:57

devil I was of the impression there was no long-term follow up of patients to show that surgery had helped treat gender dysphoria. In fact studies I've shown indicate risk of suicide isn't lessened by surgery. I'd be interested if there is research out there I'm not aware of.

devilinmyshoes · 20/10/2016 10:58

I'll find out.

Ugh badly phrased. I don't mean I think I have an encylopaedic knowledge of all research! Grin I mean please point me in the direction of studies showing surgery is an effective long term treatment for gender dysphoria so I can read them

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 20/10/2016 11:05

Dolly I am not denying any trans women their rights they are not female so they have no right to be in a changing room/toilets/bathrooms that are there for females

Often the word used on toilet doors is ladies or women's. And women is an adult female human

A trans woman isn't female they can't be they are a trans woman

Fela

this blog may help

Amalfimamma · 20/10/2016 11:14

And this

Felascloak · 20/10/2016 11:18

Yeah those are the studies I am aware of.
Also that John Hopkins in the states will no longer do SRS as they don't think it's effective.

I hear so often that surgery/transition is the answer that I want to know the evidence for this position.

Amalfimamma · 20/10/2016 11:23

I'd be interested in that too seeing as scientists and researchers seem to know nothing.

women also know nothing of what it's like to be a Oman it would seem

ageingrunner · 20/10/2016 11:26

John Hopkins have actually announced they're going to start doing GRS again, after a gap of 40 years, sadly. I wonder what convinced them to change their mind?

ageingrunner · 20/10/2016 11:26

Policy, not mind 😬

ageingrunner · 20/10/2016 11:53

Those blogs are really interesting Amalfi. Pernineal urethrostomy sounds like a nasty complication of phalloplasty. I wonder how well these risks are communicated to potential patients?

kua · 20/10/2016 20:24

agerunner- follow the money...

ageingrunner · 20/10/2016 21:08

Ffs kua. What an absolute shameless twat Alex fitton is. This is the problem when we allow men to declare themselves to be women. What a joke.

ageingrunner · 20/10/2016 21:08

Also 'no that never happens'
Evidence of it happening: 'bigot!!'

shins · 20/10/2016 21:32

Coming in late here...re female-only spaces, I was sexually assaulted by a stranger when I was 13, managed to escape actual rape but was deeply traumatised for a couple of years and realise now had some kind of PTSD. I would get very nervous about being around strange men in any kind of space and once completely freaked out at a delivery man stepping into our hallway (he meant no harm, just needed the light to sign something), slamming the door in his face and becoming hysterical. Sexual violence is so, so common and there are so many girls and women with painful experiences. How dare their feelings be so casually dismissed by people like the ones on this thread declaring gosh, what are you scared of, it's only a penis! How fucking dare you?

I can't imagine how upsetting it would have been to have to share a changing room with a boy at that age. I wish those girls' voices could be heard.

2kids2dogsnosense · 20/10/2016 21:55

Excellent point shins, and one which I'm surprised none of us thought of before.

kua · 20/10/2016 21:56

Shins that's bloody awful, and thanks for sharing your experience. I wish I had the words to make it better but I don't. Flowers

GladAllOver · 20/10/2016 22:14

Quite simply, someone with a penis should not be in a women's space. There is nothing more to say.

shins · 20/10/2016 22:35

Thanks - it was over 30 years ago so long over it, but it made me aware of how widespread it is and unquantifiable, how many women and girls are carrying around experiences like that. It's been discussed already upthread I think, I was just using my own story by way of example. It's very relevant to prisons too -a very high percentage of women prisoners have suffered sexual abuse but are expected to move aside for the likes of Tara Hudson and "her" penis Hmm

Crankycunt · 20/10/2016 23:22

Maybe I'm just stupid, dense or thick.

What I don't understand is the vilification Rachel Dolezal went through for believing she is black. And appropriating black culture.

And a man with a Penis believing that they're a woman without anything other than 'I believe I'm a woman'. And if I say hang on a minute I'm a terf, transphobic cunt who needs to die.

How does that work?

shins · 21/10/2016 06:49

It doesn't, Cranky. But keep using the Dolezal comparison because it's a good one. I've never got a satisfactory answer to it.
