It was shot down with a buk ground to air missile.
They say there are no survivors.

Slithy this is from the BBC

18:20: The UK department of transport issues a statement stating: "Flights already airborne are being routed around the area by air traffic control in the region." Pilots around the world are being advised to plan routes that avoid the area, it adds.

stubbornstains · 17/07/2014 18:28

Ah fuck. Unedited photos of the crash site online from Reuters. Why did I click on them? Fool. I don't recommend that anyone else do that. Sad

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 18:28

This is supposedly pictures of the wreckage. it's horrific.

The BBC are quoting some export or other as saying that both the Ukrainian and Russian air forces use technology which should allow them to differentiate commercial airliners easily.

mamalovesmojitos · 17/07/2014 18:32

Me too stubbornstains, mnetters be cautious when looking online, very distressing images.

Itsfab · 17/07/2014 18:34

9 British nationals thought to be on board Sad.

DiaDuit · 17/07/2014 18:37

Yes, i'm sure BA will follow all the correct safeguarding protocols. Also, the world's eyes are on that area right now so if whoever was responsible has any sense they'll not be doing anything again. Easy for me to say but try not to worry. Is it possible for you to contact BA and find out what is happening with his flight?

ParsingFlatly · 17/07/2014 18:39

Fucking hell.

Fucking hell.

I have a horrible feeling this is going to get a lot nastier than worrying about the poor families.Sad

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 18:39

Sky news have 'safe' images.
I want to say non distressing, but frankly it's all distressing, but there are no bodies, I think that's about as safe as you can get.

Am following flight tracker online.

I am heartbroken for the families suffering knowing they have lost loved ones.

Lighthousekeeping · 17/07/2014 18:43

Shocking. Poor families. Where on earth is this going? It's terrifying.

This is just horrific. If flights are routinely guided so as to avoid that area, why was MH17 there? Those poor families.

And yes, the fall-out from this will not be good. That PPrune site says 20 passengers with US passports, about 80 children.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2014 18:59

How can anyone have mistaken it? as carbedieum says you can watch commercial planes on flightradar24. Military ones mostly don't show.
dh was watching a flight on flightradar of a relative this afternoon and the site crashed as he was watching. Now we know why.

Those poor, poor families. What hell they are going to go through.

BertieBotts · 17/07/2014 19:00

Oh my god, this is awful.

Thanks for the heads up about the photos. They always turn up these days and hang around for a while before being deleted.

CouncilOfLadies · 17/07/2014 19:02

Just seen on CNN that storms in the south ukraine area may have forced civilian aircraft to fly around the storms, hence MH17 flying over this particular region of Ukraine.

FrankelandFilly · 17/07/2014 19:04

23 US citizens confirmed on board, they won't take it lying down and I fear for the repercussions.

butterfliesinmytummy · 17/07/2014 19:05

How do they know it was surface to air missile (buk) if no-one is admitting to it? The Ukrainians are very quick to confirm that it was a buk .... How do they know? Could have been a terrorist attack.

Lots of oil industry people fly that route (Aberdeen - kl via schipol), hoping to God none of the people we know were on it.

butterfliesinmytummy · 17/07/2014 19:07

And agree with Parsing that this is the start of something horrific. RIP.

rpitchfo · 17/07/2014 19:07

By the sound of the messages the seperatists were tweeting 30 minutes after they lost contact with the plane it's almost certainly them that did it.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 17/07/2014 19:09

Nice bit of bias on RT. Apparently it cant have been russia or the rebels, must be ukraine trying to frame one or the other Hmm

Don't jump to conclusions and beware of spin.

claig · 17/07/2014 19:13

'How do they know it was surface to air missile (buk) if no-one is admitting to it? '

Good point.

claig · 17/07/2014 19:17

Ukrainians telling us that Russian separatist "nutjobs" have weapons that can shoot down airliners flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet, but the Ukrainians have forced them out of Slavyansk.
