The flight mh17 from Amsterdam to kuala lumpor with 295 people on board, it was a boing 777.
It was shot down with a buk ground to air missile.
They say there are no survivors.

It's awful.

Plus the commercial plane was following the same course used by the cargo plane

MerdeAlor · 17/07/2014 17:51

Sorry that was following on from weareeternals last post.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:52

I'm watching three news channels at once and googling.
And you are all way better to chat to about it than DP.

I'm going to become addicted and start obsessively watching the news 24/7 like I did when MH370 went missing.

It's just so horrific. I need to know everything so that I can try to understand how it could happen.

My dad is currently on a flight from SE Asia to England. Took off within the last hour and will be flying over Russia. I'm scared.

Rest in peace all the victims of flight MH17.

angelohsodelight · 17/07/2014 17:53

Ukrainian rebels don't have planes so big question is why would surface to air missiles be used?

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:54

They thought the cargo plane was a Ukrainian military transport plane apparently.

Gosh this is terrible.

RIP. Those poor poor people.

So awful for Air Malaysia. What will happen to them?

Selks · 17/07/2014 17:58

I have just heard that two of my daughter in law's Bruneian relatives might be on that plane, heading home for the Eid celebrations. They are a young couple; university students. It's possible they were not on that flight but they don't know as yet. I feel sick to my stomach.

weatherall · 17/07/2014 17:58

It's not the first time this has happened.

The US shot down an Iranian passenger jet

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655

Killing 290 people in the 80s.

There's a theory that Lockerbie was a revenge attack for this.

Also during the Cold War this Korean flight

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Lines_Flight_007

Was shot down by the Russians.

These tradgedies are terrible. If the international community knew this airspace was dangerous then flight plans should have been changed.

Given the route I imagine there will have been lots of nationalities on board.

I hope this doesn't escalate into ww3.

DiaDuit · 17/07/2014 17:58

Slithy do you think your dad's plane might be redirected?

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/07/2014 17:59

Oh Selks

CarbeDiem · 17/07/2014 18:11

I'm not buying that it was 'mistaken' for anything.

Even I, with zero knowledge or experience in air traffic can find this - www.flightradar24.com/ - find Ukraine, then the area it happened and press on the real time button. It shows you the flights in the air with numbers etc...
I'm quite sure whoever is responsible for this is more savvy than me, have much better access to such information and are using sophisticated means of comms.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 18:11

Selks that is awful. I hope they are safe.

I hope your DIL soon has confirmation that her relatives were on a different flight selks.

This is horrific. Plane crashes are thankfully rare, but two within 5 months is actually very scary. Especially when one has been reportedly "brought down" & the other has disappeared in suspicious/unknown circumstances Sad.

Poor families. Again.

Itsfab · 17/07/2014 18:14

slithytove - please let us know when your father has safely landed.

Selks - I hope your DIL's relatives missed the flight. Let us know.

RIP Flowers for all on board and their families.

Selks · 17/07/2014 18:14

OK just got text from my son, the relatives are not on that plane, not flying until tomorrow. Thank fuck. Feel really shaken up now, might go out for a bit. Really feel for the families of those that were on that flight.

Darkesteyes · 17/07/2014 18:15

This is horrific Malaysia Airlines have lost two planes within the space of six months.

RIP all those who were on flight MH17 Thanks Thanks

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 17/07/2014 18:16

Selks Thanks

RandomFriend · 17/07/2014 18:16

Are we sure the Malasayian plane was shot down? Perhaps it is news news agencies that have confused a lost plane that has crashed with the Russian one that was shot down?

Itsfab · 17/07/2014 18:17

Thank goodness for that, Selks.

DoctorTwo · 17/07/2014 18:17

Aljazeera is reporting that it was shot down by a Ukrainian missile, as is RT. France24 says it could be Russian separatists. Whoever shot it down made a catastrophic mistake. Sad All those bereaved families. Sad

Darkesteyes · 17/07/2014 18:18

Selks I know how you feel My parents flew out to New York the day before 9/11 It was an anxious time Wine

CarbeDiem · 17/07/2014 18:22

Selks Good news, thank God.

Slithy I know it sounds silly but try not to worry too much.
There'll be a huge security warning now and all flights that were/are supposed to fly over Ukraine airspace will be diverted.

stubbornstains · 17/07/2014 18:23

There are some pictures online of people standing in a field looking at a big piece of wreckage that is clearly part of a Malaysian Airlines plane.

The Ukrainians are saying they don't even possess those kind of missiles. Apparently, the Russian separatists do.

slithytove · 17/07/2014 18:25

dia I don't know, I can't find any information. It's not going near the Ukraine luckily but still, pretty damn nerve wracking. BA so hopefully they will do what's needed to keep passengers safe. Roll on 6am.
