The flight mh17 from Amsterdam to kuala lumpor with 295 people on board, it was a boing 777.
It was shot down with a buk ground to air missile.
They say there are no survivors.

It's awful.

A ukrainian minister is saying separatists shot down the plane.

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/07/2014 17:03

BBC Radio 4 saying Ukrainian government are blaming pro-Russian separatists...

Fitzers · 17/07/2014 17:04

Terrible news

The professional pilots website is a good place for informed comment on incidents like this. They know what they are posting about and there's not much patience given to rumour mill type posts like on some news websites

LGJ · 17/07/2014 17:04

So in essence Russian.

MerdeAlor · 17/07/2014 17:06

Sky is reporting that planes yesterday were shot at in Russian territory, one was hit and the pilot ejected safely.
Early days but you've got to wonder why they continued to think this airspace was safe?

mumtosome61 · 17/07/2014 17:07

Malaysian Airlines announced the loss of contact on Twitter - I recognise this use of social media as quick and efficient, but I don't like it. I heard that the relatives of those who (likely) perished on the earlier disappearance of MA plane were informed by text!

Very tragic though - I have the news on now. If the plane was at 10k then I'm not sure why it was so low, and if it was at 33k then there are some very strong, powerful weapons that are being harbored.

Tweedledont · 17/07/2014 17:11

It was apparently at 10,000 metres (33,000 feet)

AuntieStella · 17/07/2014 17:11

One pprune poster mentions that the Russians shot down a Ukrainian fighter plane earlier (think I heard SKY reporting an Ilyushin).

But the Russians wouldn't mistake a 777 (on a known commercial flight path, behaving normally) for a fighter.

GrowlLikeMargeSimpson · 17/07/2014 17:11

That's the route that H will be taking next month when he goes to visit his family. It's really worrying, there must be a lot of Europe to Asia traffic through that airspace.

CauldronOfFrogsLegs · 17/07/2014 17:12

Horrific. Makes you wonder about mh370. :(

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 17/07/2014 17:13

There were ukrainians onboard the missing ma plane werent there. I cant remember the outcome of that, though i remember it being looked into?

Do the ukraine separatists have something against malaysia?

HerRoyalNotness · 17/07/2014 17:14

I looked up the alleged missile used, it has a ranged of 25km (82k feet!)

The mind boggles really. I feel less safe each passing day.

mumtosome61 · 17/07/2014 17:15

Tweedledont - Ta, it riles me when they express height in different measurements and interchange it. Terrible stuff.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:17

They are saying that it's most likely the separatists misidentified the plane and shot it down thinking it was something other than a passenger airliner.

Itsfab · 17/07/2014 17:18

Obviously a coincidence given that it still isn't known what happened to MH370.

AuntieStella · 17/07/2014 17:20

"An advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Gerashenko, says the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres (33,000 feet) when it was "hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher", in a post on his Facebook page".

How on earth would a Ukrainian know the type of missile involved this early on, unless it was one of theirs?

Ilovenewts · 17/07/2014 17:23

This is really awful. It's one awful thing after another for Malaysians.

Ilovenewts · 17/07/2014 17:23

And whomever else was flying on it today ofcourse.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:23

The separatist leader has made a statement saying that they are not involved and that it was the Ukrainian government, although they have denied any involvement too.

I just can't believe this.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:25

They are now sawing it is 20 miles from the Russian border.

OP posts:
SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 17/07/2014 17:26

Was Russia in its intended flight plan/path?

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:27

Oh my, now they are saying there are local news reports that there is nothing left but burning wreckage and bodies.

OP posts:
WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:27

Yes it was.

Sometimes think the advent of social media just muddies the waters too much. Must be hell for the families to find out this way :(
