The flight mh17 from Amsterdam to kuala lumpor with 295 people on board, it was a boing 777.
It was shot down with a buk ground to air missile.
They say there are no survivors.

It's awful.

Russia today are apparently there now

somewherewest · 17/07/2014 17:29

If it was shot down it must have been separatists. Given the separatists have no planes and the Russians aren't reported to be infringing Ukrainian air space, Ukrainian jets have no reason to be firing at other planes. If it turns out to have been separatists using sophisticated surface to air missiles supplied by Russia, the Russians will be in deep deep shit internationally. Given its come down in conflict zone it will probably be extremely hard to mount any kind of proper investigation. Heartbreaking for the families Sad.

Yes it seems to be that everyone else suspects it was the separatists as they have recently 'bragged' about having these kind of weapons and they are known for being trigger happy.

Sky news saying that a number of planes have been brought down in the area recently. Its outrageous that commercial aircraft weren't diverted away from this area if this is true. Unbelievable and so so tragic.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:35

Someone claiming to be the separatist leader posted online earlier saying they had shot down a Ukrainian cargo plane 20 minutes before it was reported MH17 was missing.
After it was clear it was not a cargo plane Russia took down the posts!

Mumtosome, it was only relatives who couldn't be reached any other way who were notified by text when MH370 was declared lost.

Icantstopeatinglol · 17/07/2014 17:36

Apparently the Russian separatists earlier bragged they'd brought down a 'Cargo' plane....erm no! Bloody passenger plane! Why were Malaysian airlines flying over such a dangerous area? There have been reports of planes being shot at recently.
Those poor poor people.
RIP Flowers

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:37

They said earlier that airlines have been advised to abide the area but due to the cost of rerouting some airlines haven't bothered to do so.
I imagine after the MH370 tragedy Malaysian airlines couldn't afford the extra cost.

Fuck this is awful. Those poor people. And their families.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:38

Avoid not abide. Bloody autocorrect.

Russia and Ukraine will both be monitoring that airspace heavily, and there is a good chance that NATO is too. If there was a missile then there is a good chance there will be good quality evidence about it, and in the hands of more than one nation, so cover-up harder.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:40

I don't doubt for a second they know exactly what shot down the plane so early on for that exact reason AuntieStella

weareeternal if this is true (I've heard that report too) then that explains a lot.
This will be a massive multinational incident with far reaching political implications.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 17/07/2014 17:42

Oh God. This is terrible. Those poor people.

MerdeAlor · 17/07/2014 17:43

I bet none of the passengers even knew they were flying over volatile Ukrainian airspace.

stubbornstains · 17/07/2014 17:44

WTAF? How can you confuse a passenger jet flying at cruising altitude for a military aircraft? Just how??

I had no idea missiles could reach that high. Bloody scary.

AndHarry · 17/07/2014 17:44

Someone has gone stark raving bonkers. Who in their right mind shoots down a passenger plane?! Those poor passengers and crew!

Apparently the Parliamentary recess has been suspended. This is going to have some extremely serious consequences.

AndHarry · 17/07/2014 17:45

And may God help us all if it was the Russians.

angelohsodelight · 17/07/2014 17:46

It's scary. Poor poor people and families. Plus the repercussions. Russia apparently supplied the weapons.

AuntieStella · 17/07/2014 17:47

Thanks WeAreEternal I didn't know how long it would take to review and establish such info, and then brief politicians (whose associates then post online). It was under two hours (?) from incident to FB posting, and I thought that was impossibly fast, but happy to be corrected.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:48

They are saying that on a basic radar system a passenger boring 777 looks very similar to a cargo plane.
If someone was untrained and trigger happy I can see how they could make the mistake.

JeggingsHateMe · 17/07/2014 17:49

I am catching up on this having just got in from work, I really cannot believe anyone could just shoot down a packed passenger jet?! Horrific!

AuntieStella · 17/07/2014 17:49

If it was a Buk (as briefed by Ukrainians) that's a Soviet era weapon and could have been acquired from either side (or indeed many other places).

CarbeDiem · 17/07/2014 17:49

I hope you're right Auntie somebody needs their head on a plate for authorising the plane to be shot down.
295 poor innocents :( I just don't have words.
