hub2dee, Shalwar Qameez or Qamees would be better. Shalwar is the trousers, and Urdu word, and Qamees or Qameez (Arabic root) is the shirt.

and Salwar is just not right.

I will leave the security issue now. Obviously greater brains are at work here.

speedymama, when you are in power, you can legislate to have us men wear the veil, and more power to you.

The Nigerian Court's decision and what the sharia is have nothing to do with this thread, and I do not want to get drawn again into an explanation of sharia, and why the Nigerian or the Pakistani or other Courts are far from the sharia. That is a different topic.

Sadly, 'Shalwar Qameez' scores just 561 hits .

'Shalwar Qamees' is the worst yet at just 265 hits , if of course, number of hits can be correlated with accepted spelling.

speedymama - my useful reference book says that the zones of a man's body that should be covered are from the navel to the knee. Also, he should wear only dull colours, whereas we women are allowed to wear whatever colour we like, and any fabric (silks etc.)

peacedove - the Koran doesnt say that you have to cover your face (dx told me this, he was brought up Muslim). So if you do, then it looks as though you are trying to be a better Muslim than others. Or, it looks as though you are more beautiful than other women.
It has been very cold in Munich recently, so I have taken to wearing a fur hat, and a scarf over the lower part of my face, so that only my eyes are showing. Interestingly, I have noticed that I have been getting more attention from men. They seem to find it intriguing that they cant see if I am old or young or beautiful or not(sadly, not!). there is a sense of mystery. Therefore, if I wished to avoid male attention, I would not cover my whole face!

I live in Leicester (born here too) which in less than two years will be the first city in England with a white minority, and in my 34 years I've had numerous discussions about all sorts of religions, I am personally a Catholic, my neighbours friends and fellow workers are all sorts, protestant, shiek, muslim, hindu, Jehovan witness, I even know a Scientoligist (Tom Cruise's religion), and as much fun as this thread has been to read, nobody is going to be happy at the end.

PD obviously feel very strongly, and so do MD and others, there is no right or wrong on this subject just opinions, so might I suggest each of you go and kiss or hug a loved one, and teach them acceptance of others...

Or you could just ignore me and keep fighting...

I wear long skirts most of the time and I am always tripping over them, or stepping on them while going down stairs, nothing graceful about me

a headscarf and a hoodie are very different.
the headscarf does not cover the face, or render cctv cameras incapable of seeing the face.
as a ssecurity issue, i would encourage muslim women not to cover their faces. but scarves???????

oh, and i think a woman covered[in some nice clothes materials etc] with nothing showing but her eyes is possibly the sexiest you can get.

Stitch,as a Muslim woman your views are far more intersting to me than those of PD's (and yes,we know it's a bloke).

If you think that such garb is 'the sexiest' surely it defeats the whole object of covering up which people tell me is to hide one's beauty????

I'm confused now.....

(Must be said that when I went to the mosque with my Muslim friends as a student, wearing long dark robes and a head covering, lots of blokes liked it.
Lure of the exotic eh????)

probly md.
but the sexy bit was just my view that a nicely worn item of clothing that covers theentire body is far sexier than a boob tube and a plaster for a skirt sort of thing.

i dont do hijab. various reasons, none of them particularly noble. but, i feel very angry that someone could tell me i cant, and that it is a security risk. i know for a fact it isnt.

as far as covering the face is concerned, well, islam does not insist on it. it tends to be more cultural than anything else. also, you will find, that in muslim countries, where security is an issue, then women have to uncover there faces. in any all women place in saudi arabia women HAVE to remove their face coverings as a security issue.

Side thing: saw a magic unusual sight round the corner from me (Camden) last week: a young Muslim goth-ish girl in an Hijab. Goth eyeliner, dark lippy, platforms under her gown and a smattering of Slipknot badges. I don't blink at much round here but she put a smile on my face all day.
