Flying high in July (or trying to!) - the FlyLady thread

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 30/06/2018 09:14

A warm (or cooling with our current weather) welcome to the July Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website ) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day the thread leader (me this month) posts links and missions from the Flylady site and also some friendly (!) personal comments. This is quite a ‘talky’ thread but we try our hardest not to be cliquey and new members are very welcome! I will do my best to keep track of everybody Smile.

Please note that Flylady is (understandably) keen for people to click on her site so please do have a look around the site and the links. On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

Be kind to yourselves, jump in where you are and be careful not to crash and burn!

The first day of the month is Sunday. Since it’s a weekend there is no official mission or zone work, unless you want to of course.

*
Here is the daily summary for Sunday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

I assume we are going into zone 1 next week which is the entrance area. However this week we have been in the living room. The Flylady website can take a few days to update the zones when the month changes so I will have a good look at it tomorrow and Monday to see where we are.

The link to the current zone and missions is [[http://www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions here].

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 5/ zone 1.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

daily focus

missions for the week

Flykids mission

Once I figure out July’s habit I will let you know what it is!

beginner babysteps.

Happy flying everyone.

bower I've heard of that gin from Aldi! Might pick a bottle up when I go next. I love gin Grin

foxessocks · 27/07/2018 11:06

Sorry I'm thread hogging now. Meant to ask those with school age children when and where is best for uniform?? Start of holidays or end or middle? What if dd has a growth spurt?!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 27/07/2018 11:14

Morning all, DD1 at an activity so just DD2 and me today. We’ve just got back from the drop off so going to try to do some kind of tidy up.

foxes, I’ll reply properly later but if you want summer gingham dresses (absolutely not essential for autumn term, lots of new starters don’t bother and you need to check your school uniform advice as to whether they like them to wear them in autumn term) then you need to buy them ASAP. They sell out and don’t get restocked.

OP posts:
TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 27/07/2018 11:15

They’ll get restocked in time for next spring, don’t worry, it’s just if you want them for September!

OP posts:
TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 27/07/2018 11:15

Also we are at 956 posts (not helped by me posting in 3 what I could have said in 1)! I’ll keep an eye on this as I assume we will need a sencond thread.

Our school doesnt like gingham except summer term (after Easter)so be aware of thatfoxes
Cardigans/jumpers I but long enough turn cuffs and cover to just above thumb to first finger join(that v shape when open thumb from fingers)
Shirts so cuff folded back fit, girls wear trousers and spend my life replacing as grow but not laydee like enough for skirts be flashing undergarments at rest class
I buy first-second week August, any later might not find sizes want.for reception kids I do second week after rest school go back if they start later, otherwise two weeks before school restarts(and wear them for a bit for a day or two to make sure no blisters).Asda is my go-to for quality cheap uniform that washes up well(morrisons for boys trousers as my string bean son ends up looking like he's wearing a sack tied up with the string once done the adjustable waist)

I.AM.FUMING
just spent hour in girls den if fetidness.both sat there dd2 laughing and encouraging lil zoo just watch not help.ive clean less than a metre of floor, under dd2 bed and sorted her drawers,to which I've found 3packs always(I need more Sunday mum, there's none left)2 of pantliners and 4fuckjnv deodorants.accruex enough laundry from a metre floor plus under dd2 bed to find near 2BINBAGSAngry
Dd2 prattling and looking at stuff on her bookcase.i am ready to kill as it's sweltering in there and no one's helping me.i still not well and the heats making my palpitations bad and feel rough, but find myself thinking touch about last weekend if just sit quietly.
I just wanted some helpSad

IVEgotthePOWER · 27/07/2018 11:28

Tesco have new uniform range in now (brought into stores after mumsnet did the trial - whatacockup) I picked up the following for dd this week - 2 zip front pleated pinafores, 2 pleated skirts and a gingham zip playsuit. Total £26.

I prefer cardigans from Next at £7 each. Our school logo ones are a weird shape and piss me off.

I prefer Asda for polos as they do some nice pretty different styles e.g. one with a peplum, or frill round the buttons etc. They wash well too.

Be aware all polos will get covered in black pen but you can still use these under a pinafore and no one need know Smile

I like dd to have an easy outfit on days she has to get changed at school so trousers instead of something with tights

IVEgotthePOWER · 27/07/2018 11:36

zoo Sad if it any consolation one day she will look back and realise what an ungrateful cow she was and be ashamed

Stilllivinginazoo · 27/07/2018 11:56

Doubtful I've think she suffers from father's dellusional attitude they're summat special!!
I have a banging headache...

foxessocks · 27/07/2018 12:00

Thanks everyone very helpful! And good tip re summer dresses. They can start in summer dresses I think. The school haven't been very informative actually!! I saw some nice pinafore dresses in Asda today so good to know they wash well etc. I'll maybe do it week after next then so not too soon but hopefully not all sold out...

Bowerbird5 · 27/07/2018 13:01

Our school doesn't care just glad if they turn up in anything resembling school uniform. If fact we rather like it if still in summer dresses as it prolongs feeling of summer. Good if little ones wet themselves too as can rinse out and dry in nursery and send home in them instead of school spares as we rarely get them back. Reminds me I am going in there again this year, only at the beginning this time. Help!

Well boudoir is nearly finished. I have cleaned out three handbags.

Can you tell a person by its handbag?
Well reckon you could tell quite a lot about me!
Lots of receipts from supermarkets will say I like good food as smoked salmon, sole, some more unusual veg and fruit no soft drinks except tonic which usually means gin.
One bandage, sterile wet wipes, a few random sized plasters, bottle of hand sanitiser, some paracetamol.
Lots of personal cards with artists names on. Also potters.
Several charity things.
Several pens of different colours and two handwriting pens.
A couple of quiz sheets.
A polly pocket.
A completed spelling sheet from a boy who never does homework. I must have kept it for evidence or because😳 I couldn't believe he had done it 😁
A paper clipping of a school outing and I was actually on it!
A plane ticket of DD first flight without me to a far away country when my mum died. She had to come later and I was so worried as she had to change planes. I recommend teaching them to look at screens each time you go as it is exciting then and comes in useful later. A bit like learning to read a bus timetable because when she went to Uni she couldn't. We didn't have a bus service then. Now you stand and wait between 10:15 and 10:45 and it turns up somewhere in- between!😁
I also had several unrecognisable drawings. Some with messages and names scrawled on. I hate throwing them out because they have been drawn especially for me. I keep them for a year or two. Otherwise I would have a big box full. I keep very special ones.
I had one lipstick and a small brush in one bag. Must have been going out somewhere😄
What would out you or your place of work in your handbag?

Bowerbird5 · 27/07/2018 13:10

foxes re gin. I think it was £9.99. BF also bought selection boxes for Christmas. I hope one has my name on. Of gin I mean!
She had a lovely rhubarb and ginger one the other week which was from Aldi or Lidl she can't remember which. I loved that. Very rhubarby flavour. Passion fruit was 20% so take it easy and don't drive afterwards. It didn't seem like it. We just had one as she had to put a lady to bed and I had to go home although I can leave it on lonning and walk the rest of the way. I have been known to have to leave car and walk home it isn't far. That was when we had a bit of a gin tasting session. I might have to go home that way after church. Aldi. It can be on the way home in a roundabout fashion.😄

IVEgotthePOWER · 27/07/2018 13:18

foxes last year dd had a grey jersey pinafore from asda and a black jersey one from tesco, both went really bobbly. Im sticking to the pleated ones this time

zoo honestly i was a horrific teenager, very self centered, reckless and didnt give a fuck about anyone. Once had own dc felt mortified!

Callmecordelia · 27/07/2018 13:36

I've always got Sainsburys uniform. They do a really nice double jersey pinafore set which DD has always had. With pockets!

I tend not to do a big uniform shop now and just buy it when she's looking leggy or when she's lost something. I bought naice polo shirts the first year. Shouldn't have bothered, the bog standard unisex ones are just as good.

foxessocks · 27/07/2018 14:13

Thanks. So many choices of uniform!

Ta da
Decluttered all the books in the whole house, have a whole bag for charity shop now. I love to have lots of books but we had lots that the dc just don't really even like so may as well pass them on and keep the ones they love. And I only read a book once so figured might as well get rid of what I've read and just keep what I haven't. I usually go to the library for my books anyway.

I feel motivated to carry on but being a bit defeated by the heat. I just start sweating the minute I even get up it's ridiculous. I feel so sticky and hot and horrible!

Stilllivinginazoo · 27/07/2018 14:28

I know that one foxes
The bedroom has ground to halt of angry resentment, and technology confiscation
I've decided we need a snack and a dvd to break the animosity then maybe try again

We are all hot and sleep deprived which isn't helping things at all...

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 27/07/2018 14:40

Ta da:-
Home bleugh

To do:-
Find something fun for DD2 to do as she has been very good and let me get on with the cleaning - I know, I know I should have got her involved but frankly it is hot and I just needed to get it done
Swimming lesson for DD2
Fish and chip shop tea
Laundry
Phone call - was nobody there earlier

Bower, actually my handbag / work bag is the one area I usually have vaguely organised although by no means perfect. So probably the only things that would put me are things like my wallet, work ID type stuff. My house on the other hand....!

foxes, I think lots of places are good for uniform these days so I tend to go with where is convenient for me which is Sainsbury’s, or M&S if I have vouchers or if they have a sale.

I like both of their stuff. We buy mostly logod tops and cardigans. The logo cardigans are actually really good quality so most people seem to buy them. My DDs don’t really like pinafores unfortunately so they wear the logo polo shirts. I used to buy things like the school PE bag and coat and then realised lots of other parents did too so finding the particular one I was looking for at after school club etc was difficult! You need to check what the school wants with that too though.

zoo BrewFlowersBrew

Sounds as if I really do need to get hold of a Kondo book foxes and the one you have been reading SC,

Big waves to Hills, zoo and SC and I will try to be sympathetic to big nork issues too, especially in this heat Grin.

Also wing flaps to Callme, Honky, Ive and everyone else Smile.

Fucking hell, even for a friday today has been bat shit crazy at work ShockShock

5 mins to gather myself before cold shower and hitting that list. Must. not. sit. down.

Scoopofchaff · 27/07/2018 18:21

Thanks for the delicious drink Zoo!

How would dd2 respond if you didn't ask but just said "do X now please" say it once unemotionally and matter of fact then repeat with "your choice if you get to keep your phone this evening or not". Sitting there joking while you work is not on. Flowers

Don't know if this is relevant or not Foxes but I swear by Next white school shirts. Reasonably priced and wash well.

Still sweltering. Still have headache.

Scoopofchaff · 27/07/2018 18:22

Oh yes, meant to say have achieved little. Heat has got to me!

Scoopofchaff · 27/07/2018 18:24

Love the handbag list Bower it's like Mary Poppins Grin

Scoopofchaff · 27/07/2018 18:25

I have a grackle noseband in my hand bag currently which smells strongly of dhorse!

foxessocks · 27/07/2018 18:47

I've been decluttering toys all afternoon...DD bedroom is getting there slowly. Got piles of stuff for charity shop, few things for my mum to keep at her house as she likes to have some toys for the grandchildren , and a bin bag of stuff that's just rubbish. And a huge bag of books in the boot for charity shop too. All mine and dh scarves and hats are in one box. The dc hats and gloves are in their drawers. Phew.

Made chicken chow mein for dinner but I overcooked it and it went mushy Sad keep messing up meals at the moment!

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/07/2018 19:02

Why in the love of holy are you even attempt to cook in this heat?! Shock Tooooo fucking hot also too hot for fucking imo, but you might have your own mileage on that one

Food eaten, shoulder put back into joint again, about to start doing all the things, focusing only on the important and essential.

First up bleaching bathroom oh joy, oh fun.

Yep sarcasm and insanity has firmly set in. I could sleep til monday I am that tired atm tired of the insane to do lists being part of the cause

Cagliostro · 27/07/2018 19:03
